How much sleep a night do you need?

I need 7-8 hours otherwise I'll have to catch up at some point if I go less for any period of time.

tony286 03-21-2005 12:08 AM

I like 10 but I function well on 6

kmanrox 03-21-2005 12:08 AM

Most people need around 8. If you think you can get away with less on a long term basis, be careful as you may be causing permanent damage to your health. A DJ in the 60's tried no sleep for a week or two and ended up in a mental asylum.

Some people can do four hours a night plus power naps but they need to have the rare ability to get into the deep sleep regenerative theta state almost instantly, something most of us take an hour or more to do.

In a sleep lab test I read, where they put people in windowless rooms with no clocks, they seemed to stabilize after a few days and most automatically wake up after about 8-8.5 hours sleep.

Although it's hard to do this with most people's work/family schedule, an easy way to test is get the same amount of sleep every night for a week, say 6 hours. Then on Saturday morning or whatever your first "don't have to get up early" day is, sleep in with no alarm or phone or family/friends to wake you. If you wake up after more than 6 hours you will know that you have been robbing yourself and needed to catch up as Sagi mentioned.

phogirl69 03-21-2005 02:02 AM

9 hours a day. I have no family or work obligations where I have to wake up at a certain time so I wake up whenever I want. I never use an alarm clock, I wake whenever I wake up. I always treat myself to as much sleep as I feel like. There's no reason to deny myself as much sleep as I want.

Thank God I have no work or family schedule. I like to minimize stress as much as possible. I tried taking 2 college classes awhile ago, it was pure hell. I could not even get up by 11 am to get to class. It's much better to not have a set schedule so you can sleep as much as you need.

adamneve 03-21-2005 02:07 AM

7-8 hours if not i'm like a walking Zombie

thats the problem....doing 7-8 is too much...try 6 and you will actually be more active...

DJ Reno 03-21-2005 02:15 AM

I need 6-7 hours per night. I can handle 2-3 days in a row with less than 6 hours, but then I need to take a day off to relax :)

And when I am drunk I can't sleept longer then 4-5 hours. Then my body is screaming for some water and some fresh air ;-)

I don't believe you can over sleep, when you wake up, you've had enough, like phogirl69 said.

If you force your body to get by on less than it needs, it may seem fine but as I said earlier it can have serious negative affects if done long term

chemicaleyes 03-21-2005 02:18 AM

I like seven hours but four will do the job.

zentz 03-21-2005 02:19 AM

7-8 is enough, but i like to sleep more

After college I could no longer have those days where I sleep in until the afternoon. I wake up naturally at 8 or 9 am. I miss sleeping until lunch.

Drake 03-21-2005 02:20 AM

I try to get 8 whenever I can. I can function ok on 6 which is what I usually get not only because I have things to do but I always seem to wake up after 6 hours of shut eye. I try to get a short nap during the day, it does wonders making you feel completely rejuvenated.

The average human requires 8 hours of sleep to function optimally. I wish I was one of the odd balls that only need 4 or so hours. There is one person documented that only needed 1 hour of sleep and would usually spend the night hours reading. Her REM sleep patterns were eccelerated. In other words her brain wave patterns would go thru all the things yours and mine do but within 1 hour instead of 8. Just incredible.

jamesonxx 03-21-2005 02:22 AM

Around 6-7 will do.

Illicit 03-21-2005 02:39 AM

I need 8, but routinley get 4

DraX 03-21-2005 02:49 AM

Nice to see there are alot of others with sleeping demands !!

9-9.5 would be the best for me, sleeping less makes me a dull boy.

okdesign 03-21-2005 03:19 AM

9 hours in avereage :)

Homer 03-21-2005 03:24 AM

Depends on how hard i've been working, I can live with 5 hours if I've had a lazy day, if I've been working my ass off I can sleep 13-14 hours.

Doctor Dre 03-21-2005 11:17 AM

8 min . 12 is good nuff :P I sleep a lot (when I have the time) ... I can sleep like 15 hours a day . But normally I'd say I sleep 6-8 hours

Kendra 03-21-2005 12:30 PM

I need like 8 to function normally but days off.......I sleep 12 hours and boy does it feel good!

I can get by on less but I will then be moody.

Nothing like a comfy warm bed......mmmm makes me want to go crawl back in to mine right now for a nice nap.
