50% divorce rate--engagement rings--Men are fucken stupid...

First of I am a guy and been married and divorced twice.

50% of marriges end in divorce..

Engagement ring are a fucken fortune..

I am in a relationship and she wants to get married and keeps telling me she wants over 2 carots. Thats like a minimal 10k. There is not a shot. The truth is having to buy an engagement ring is a part of the reason I don't want to get married.

I just don't get it. . Ithink women should get those cubic fake rings and be
able to trade them in for the real thing after 10 years of marrige. The fucken
diamond industry might go under especially with divorce rates of above 50%.
I just can't get that 50% divorce rate and engagement ring math. It just bogles my mind how us guys keep buying those fuckers..

Am I crazy????

MarkH 01-19-2005 10:14 AM

no you are not crazy, just cheap.

FuckFind 01-19-2005 10:14 AM

not at all bro.

only way i would buy a rock like that is with a pretty ring-specific pre-nup ;)

I'm just NOT a trusting person though by nature, so I'm probably not the one to base this decision off of.

Anyway, good luck with it!

I would never give serious consideration to marrying a woman who specified the size her rock had to be.

I am going into that business. Fucking jewelry biz - can't go wrong with that divorce rate!

Thrawn$ 01-19-2005 10:16 AM

You analyze to much stats dude, relax, take a beer and ask you gf a blowjob

hydro 01-19-2005 10:16 AM

Man dump that bitch, i know to some that ring symobolizes being in love forever but forever is a long time and things change. The truth changes daily and sometimes does a complete 180 within seconds. If you don't want to throw away 10k on a ring then don't bro. If she really loves you she wouldn't care.

very true. some guys just don't know how to pick 'em.

Peaches 01-19-2005 10:28 AM

Diamonds are one of the few things that lose value faster than a new car.

If she's specifiying a carat size (and even better, demanding a ring at all) then toss her back, IMHO.

Offer to put the money towards something that appreciates if she's that interested in the $$$.

Mark H--i am far from cheap--i am one of the most generous people I know.

Its just with the dovorce rate and what its cost for engagements rings it just gets you thinking.

Also--i have a 14 year old boy and 11 year old girl...The 10k now can be a couple years of college 10 years from now...

why can't she buy me a ring????

howard 01-19-2005 10:38 AM

Look--I am talking generally. She says she would want to 2 carots and I told her no. She even said she would give me her old ring to trade in. She happens to ge a good girl.

my point of this post is I just think buying engagements rings with todays divorce rates is insane..

I truly thing giving a fake one and trading it in after 5 or 10 years marrage makes sense..

Am I crazy for thinking that..Think how many guys buy the rings and thena few years later they never see the ring or the girl again... The whole sytem just seems unfair to me..

Phoenix 01-19-2005 10:42 AM

in some cultures the guy gets gifts and such..for taking the girl off the fathers hands i guess ;)

Giorgio_Xo 01-19-2005 10:43 AM

If your woman loves you, she wouldn't care about a ring.

Perhaps you would be better off putting more effort into your selection of life partner, and you wouldn't have to worry about buying multiple rings. Don't punish the 3rd girl, because you made 2 poor choices previous.

Diamonds don't loke their value at all, the only way they can gain or lose value is if their value cahnges in general, but not because you bought it. They are nothing like buying a car!

Snake Doctor 01-19-2005 11:25 AM

If a woman starts telling you what her carat requirements are then you need to run, not walk, away from her.

Its one thing to let you know her size and which style of diamond looks best on her hand (princess, marquise, etc etc) but the rest is bullshit.

If she really wants to be with you then she'll take a diamond chip and be happy with it because you gave it to her.

They don't really lose value its just that the markup is insane....they're triple keyed.

So if a diamond costs the jeweler 1K wholesale, they try to sell it to you for 3k....and if you negotiate you maybe get it for 2400.

Then if you try to sell it back later they tell you its worth 1K and that it "loses value" so that you won't know they raped you on the initial sale.

Short of carbon dating how would someone know the difference between a "new" and a "used" diamond anyways? They're millions of years old before they're mined aren't they?

Your right. I was in the Jewelery business for 5 years and a Diamonds value is only based on the quality and current market value. It doesn't matter if it was bought and sold 50 times or only 1. Mined 200 years ago or yesterday.

So to judge him you are one of the very few who are in a happy long term marriage and can say for certain that the failure of his 2 marriages was his fault for choosing poorly? Most marriages fail because two people are growing and changing continually and the chances of them growing in the same direction so that they are still compatible are very small. No big deal, move on. How many current marriages are poisoning the couple and any children because they don't have the courage to admit that the marriage is over.

Ever made a choice in life which when looking back you would have done different?. That's part of life, no regrets, learn and live. The only way to get anywhere is to go for it. :)

Oh and on the ring... :winkwink: ... Cubic zirconia all the way baby if anything. Why do you want to wear something worth 10K on your finger?

To make your "friends" jealous? I use quotes because if they were your friends they wouldn't give a fuck what you wear.

To make strangers jealous?

To get robbed?

:helpme

pxxx 01-19-2005 11:46 AM

You are not crazy at all.

MickeyG 01-19-2005 11:57 AM

why not go with a 1 carot then offer the 2 carrot as a 5 year aniversary present.

Peaches 01-19-2005 12:12 PM

OK, losing value was a bad way of putting it :winkwink: But it's rare you can EVER sell it for you paid for it. Buying at pawn shops is your best bet :)

They're marked up alright. There is enough diamond in African mines for everybody to wear an enormous rock. The diamond industry is one of the best controlled monopolies on earth.

WankTank 01-19-2005 12:21 PM

Ya, thats pretty sketchy shes telling you what you need to buy her.

DaddysGirl 01-19-2005 12:22 PM

3rd time is a charm right?

How much you spend on an engagement ring is based on 3 months salary sooooo......

I remember years and years ago a story on 60 minutes or one of the other news shows about a MASSIVE cache of diamonds in Russia that DeBeers was paying them not to release on the market.

xclusive 01-19-2005 12:23 PM

I bought my wife what she deserved at the time and I picked it out myself I picked something she would be happy with for life and I think we will make it.

Pornwolf 01-19-2005 12:25 PM

Give her a 3 kt cz. If she says before marriage, "why did you give me a fake ring" you know she's not the right one because she's getting it appraised.

UniversalPass Pete 01-19-2005 12:25 PM

Two words! Cubic Zirconium! :thumbsup

Kard63 01-19-2005 12:32 PM

80% of women are fucked up that are 30+ and not married. You are fucked now. If I were gonna have a leech I would have a 18 year old leech.

Marriage is stupid anyway.. you cheat on her, you lose half your shit.. she cheats on you. you lose half your shit.

sickkittens 01-19-2005 12:41 PM

Did you get the first two rings back? ;)

CC 01-19-2005 12:45 PM

Why does she want a 2 carat stone? I mean, specifically, WHY? If you really can't afford it, would she be willing to help with the costs? You have to talk to her about this. She sounds awfully materialistic by just saying "2 carats or else"! What really matters is the cut. Give me a WELL-CUT 1 carat stone any day over a poorly cut 2 carat stone. Hearts and arrows...yummy!! No offense people, but CZ is crap. It is not durable enough for years of daily use.

Moissanite is another option. Not as inexpensive as a CZ but it's extremely durable.

Yo, check out the pawn shop guys ;)

Mr Pheer 01-19-2005 01:17 PM

you've been married twice already and didnt learn? You've already got two kids, whats the point?

and yeah, 50% of marriages end in divorce as the national average, but 100% of your marriages have ended in divorce. And she's picking out the ring...

I'd run screaming, and I run far and fast.

Relish XXX 01-19-2005 01:21 PM

There was a film I watched once where this guy had a huge supply of cheap rings on him so that he could make out as though he really liked the girl just to get a lay.

Probably should have also had a supply of pre nup's on him as well....
