For you guys that do not know how to do a traceroute:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

In that window, type 'ipconfig /tracert'. To copy the info there, just click on edit (very upper left hand corner menu) and select copy.

The full command line actually would be - 'ipconfig /tracert impurethoughts.com'.

Thanks guys for the help so far. As I suspected, my host is leaking traffic, and has been for some time now.

I went to a DNS specific help forum and this is what the admin from there said:

traceroute stalls out, no ping, no answer on port 80.

If this has been ongoing, it may be best to look for a new host.

Well, this is not completelly correct. Traffic loss could happen on many hops, it's not because you time out for example on the 15th hop that the 15th hop is the cause of this. I don't want to get to technical but you can time out on any hop if the previous 1 to 6 hops are failing although those previous ones gave a correct reply. Could be for example a router of an ISP that times out once ina while causing a host that is 4 hops or even more after that ISP to be unreachable.

If i got the ip of the hosts FIRST inside hop i can do a 24 hour test to see it's availability from 6 different servers, it's a simple but effective test. I can send you the reports after the test.

From another board:

'ds0.nyc1.webair.net is giving you some problems no doubt.'

Also, I can understand there being problems along the way, but not on the level that I am having packet loss. That is the reason that I want to get as many views from different people as I can.

This has been a problem for some time now, and I always assumed that it was the other guys ISP giving them the problem, but I am now strongly suspecting the host.

Just curious, do you have your own server (colo) or use their server or virtuall plan?

I have two servers there, for almost two years now. I thought they were gonna be the last host I would ever need, especially after leaving Candid, but it looks like I may have to be on the look out for a new host, and we all know how fun server changes can be.

Maybe you should take it step by step for 1 week or so, first, throw some packages at the firewall, see if it's not blocking to fast, then try the dns servers, then the routers from the first point within webair, then the two servers, that way you can single out wich one exactly is causing a leak. Then just present them with the reports you have, maybe they will replace/fix the problem. Also consider bottle neck traffic loss, send bigger packages to test that.

I think that that would be something that WebAir should do if they want to keep me as a customer.

Remember, this is a problem that I have contacted them on numerous occasions, over the last year or two, but they never did anything to help.

This is quite possibly one of the worse things that could ever happen to a webmaster that sells and buys traffic.

I posted this same thread over at AWI and am getting the same horrible results there.

I should have figured this out long ago. I had no idea that the traffic leaks at WebAir were this substantial.

Keep the traceroutes coming guys, I really appreciate it.
