Overture drops adult keywords...

I just got an email from Overture informing me that they are dropping a group of my PPC keywords.

The keywords all have "bukkake" in them...
I have been paying PPC for these keywords for over a year.

Is anyone else having Overture drop their adult keywords?

I have had many adult keywords refused from these folks.

WiredGuy 06-19-2004 07:14 PM

They've been on an adult killing rampage the last 48 hours (Friday morning). I have well over 20 accounts with them and every hour or so I'd get a new email with more keywords they removed. After being a customer for over 3 years and several hundred thousand spent with them, this is their thank you. Well fuck you right back Overture!

that sux

BradM 06-19-2004 07:17 PM

They stopped accepting penis keywords like a month ago.

I saw this coming 3-4 months ago with the removal of casino stuff. They would just naturally clean shop.

WG: Want to start another adult only PPC network and syndicate XML results accross qualified adult sites? (not a joke) I have experience (a lot) let's talk.

Rick Latona 06-19-2004 07:17 PM

So what are they going to do with that traffic? Are they just not giong to send the links back in the XML feeds? If someone has Overture that cascades to Google it will just go straght to Google now?

If you and Wired Guy both want to jump in on the upcoming Dollars.com PPC project hit me up. It'll be a monstor. You'll be able to grab banners and bid on keywords, etc. on Dollars.com. We will have every feature that Value Click has now under their umbrella. My business plan is an open book and there are rewards for anyone who can help me reach my goal.

Our feeds will be available via XML and we will have a shit ton of built in traffic.

As in buying listings or carrying listings on my sites? If you have PPC SE traffic, I'm always interested in buying.

Several Hundred Grand... Damn!

Why would a Search Engine do this?
People are going to keep searching for adult keywords.

This is odd, especially after all the reports confirming that adult keywords are the most often searched.

Fuck you Overture!

My guess is simply let the traffic default to their generic SE listings (not paid). A huge waste of money if you ask me but like BradM said, I was kind of expecting it. Since Yahoo took over, they've been rather frustrating to work with from an adult or gaming side.

Nope - I did broker deals with Valueclick. Sorry if I wasn't too clear on that. I didn't actually work AT VC I just did some deals with them.

Really? You never mentioned that to me during the demo. If you have PPC traffic, keyword based or banner based I'm definitely interested. If its not live yet and want suggestions, let me know. I've worked with a solid 20 PPC SE's and know most of the big players inside and out.

Why is Overture dropping certain adult keywords? No doubt they are going to lose a lot of money by doing this. What is in it for them?

You could consider WG going 50/50 with me in a mega site.I have pr coming out of my ears but no time to utilise it.With your seo expertise and scripts and my pr we could have plenty of search engine traffic in 3mths.

flashfire 06-20-2004 01:53 AM

I got a response from my OVT representative:

Our President G.W.Bush searched for anal fisting on Altavista and surprisingly pornographic sites appeared through the Overture XML feeds. A high executive from the Whitehouse called us and complained. Finally, we received an official warning to remove a number of keywords from our database. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Jarrod 06-20-2004 02:38 AM

Will this soon lead to all sex terms being banned on overture?

fucking_remco 06-20-2004 02:40 AM

Hmmm from origin "bukkake" isn't a erotic keyword, it was used as punishment(and still is).

Funny to see how companies get rich thanks to "adult" and fook u over after they filled their pockets....

slavdogg 06-20-2004 02:42 AM

man overture must be taking a big hit these days
not adult terms
no gambling
no drugs

i wonder what % of the rev they were ?
i'm guessing about 3%

They also wrote me they dropped some keywords, it doesn't matter anyway to me, since I don't use them for months now.
Last time, after poor conversions (and I used to earn a lot with them in the past), I added $70 from a sponsor rewards, and it made no income to me, so I dropped them, as I got more and more free SE traffic.
They even told me to put $20-25/month as a minimum according to their terms, to avoid the deletion of my account, I didn't add any money, but the account is still there - I bet they will not delete soon :)

They still need customers and money, but they probably delete keywords that are likely to draw them into costly legal problems.

How often does Bush seach for anal fisting or bukkake? And is Overture really that surprised that their listings appeared on Altavista considering they own it?!

WG

BradM 06-20-2004 11:04 AM

I put a fair amount of $ in there reluctantly (I mean seriously, $3 a click are they retarded?) and pretty much broke even on it. Same amount of $ in any other ppc se gave me extreme returns.

I was never really a believer in their system to be honest anyways.

EDIT: For the keywords I bid on - to be specific. I'm sure some of them worked but the ones I bid on never did that well.
