Why do you think the Fast Food lifestyle has taken over the US and not other countries?

Beats me. It's taken off in other countries as well.. but I don't think many consume MAINLY fast/ready foods in other countries.

Less time to cook, higher value of time working. Combine that with more convenience and and higher purchasing power you've got yourself a winner. :)

Chaldoray 06-12-2004 05:52 PM

The reason is americans don't cook is because they are too lazy.
Why would they want to cook if the fast food is 2 minutes away?

Besides you might miss the latest episode of a crappy reality show if you spent 30 minutes cooking.

It's a high consumption lifestyle. We'll go out to eat more because we feel we can afford it and deserve it and restaurant food is fatty. I think european attitude is why go out to a restaurant when you can eat at home.
I have family members from europe and they'll never go out to eat because it's a waste of money. But I eat out once or twice a day.

Also because we make so much corn here that it's cheap food and its cheap for the food companies to put high fructose corn syrup in everything.

Why do you tie the 2nd statement to only Americans?

Apparently they're not french, italian, greek or spanish. :)
Those guys eat out a LOT.. and spend hours in a restaurant chatting and eating

It's not restaurant food. It's FAST food, and microwave foods..and the amount consumed combined with the lack of exercise.

Restaurant food is plenty fat with the cream sauces on everything and the sugars.

When I was in europe I didn't see any huge supermarkets like we have here in the states. The biggest food store was about the size of 3 convenient stores and you didn't have much choice.

In the states our supermarkets are like warehouses. You go down an aisle and there are 30 different kinds of potato chips, 40 different kinds of cookies, 30 different kinds of sodas, 100 flavors of ice cream. They don't do that in europe.

When I was in europe there were 2 different kinds of toilet papers, maybe 4 choices of soda, 4 choices of chips, etc.

We just have this hunger for more more more in the states.

Because they have many modern convieniences and most of them can afford to eat all the food they wish to eat.

True.. but, you spend 2 hours in a restaurant and eat an appetizer, main course and coffee. While in the mean time you could eat a bigmac meal, some sundae (15 minutes).. then go home, drink some soda eat some chocolate / donuts whatever etc etc etc. :)

Lol. I honestly doubt that's the reason. I think a great majority of european people can afford to eat what they want.

You must have been in Europe 20 or 30 years ago... You have no idea how it is here now if you say things like this

BaldBastard 06-12-2004 06:14 PM

It's just not the crap food epidemic that the US has it's portion size at resturants as well. recently I was in Vegas and a friend ordered a calamari entree, anywhere else in the world you would get 6-10 nice golden fried rings with tartar sauce, a bit of lettuce garnish and a slice of lemon. Its a pretty crappy but standard dish world wide.
What she got was a platter with 2lb of calamari, it went around a table of 8 and she was still left with enough for 10 more people.

This was a starter for one!

Another lady ordered chicken for the main
Out comes a whole roasted chicken :))

When you look at this food in front of you you don't think wohoo look at what I get for my $$. You just think " No wonder there all fat fucking pigs "

I can't talk I'm a fat bastard at least by the rest of the worlds standards and for me there is nothing nicer than buying clothes in the US simply because I don't need the biggest size they have, in fact I feel slim and trim :)

I can back you up here. I lived in Italy for 4 years and my favorite store was Iper Familia. As big, if not bigger, than any store in the U.S.

2 years ago. I remember actually counting that there were 2 brands of toilet paper on the shelf and one of them had a picture of a puppy on it. I think it was called Page or something. I remember it because I bought some. I was just suprised at the lack of choices. I was talking to my friend on the phone and telling him "They have nothing here".

I also remeber complaining how bad the food was. There were vendors in the walls selling "meat", I couldn't tell what kind, so I avoided it. I did get a chicken sandwich and it was just a roll with dry chunks of chicken inside of it. No mayo or lettuce or anything to dress it up. I took a bite and threw it away.
All I ate all week were BLT sandwiches I got from the store and slices of pizza. And the pizza was so bad I'd take a few bites and throw the rest away. I'll never forget how bad the food was everywhere I went. It was really horrible. If I stayed there I'd be skinny too.

Screaming 06-12-2004 06:28 PM

Maybe you should have gotten out of the tourist areas.

I've seen plenty of huge supermarkets in Europe.

How long were you there? Two weeks?

That will correct teeth that aren't straight?
That's news to me. Also, I don't think french have any worse haircuts than anywhere else, USA included.

digi 06-12-2004 06:38 PM

People simply need to move more. I don't understand peope who never work out... you feel so much better if you do it a couple of times a week.
