The Poker Experiment: INTRODUCTION
For those that were interested I have copied this from the poker forum I post in. I lost the original thread I started here so if someone has it bookmarked bump it for me please.
_____________________________________________ Introduction: Hello everyone, and welcome to my poker experiment. For those of you that don't know, I will be playing poker on a modest bankroll for 30 days and reporting my results for all to see. I have set a personal challenge of $10,000 to $20,000 in 30 days. I had to put the "kickoff" on hold for a few days because of some personal stuff that came up but I'm going to start tracking everything now. I did get a few hours in the last few days and my bankroll when I started typing this was $791.95 instead of the original $500 I planned to use. I just read all of the comments in the thread I started asking people to guess the outcome of this experiment and I love every one of them. From the well wishes to the doomsayers I enjoy each and every response. The people that say I will go bust etc. are the reason I decided to do this to begin with. Not only do I love the negative attitudes but I actually thrive on it. It's what drives me to succeed. I even had someone that has played with me call me a fish. Now this is wonderful as poker is my main source of income now and the more people that think I'm a fish the better. I can definately see why someone might think I'm a fish because I often play wild when I'm winding down or just having fun. I also know how to mix it up with the best of them. Either way, I look forward to showing these guys what I'm made of or hearing their taunts if I go bust. Ok the details. I will be playing at Party Poker and my nickname there is "stocktrader". Feel free to stop by and wish me luck, try to get my money, or tell me how much I suck. I'll mix it up with the best of them in the chatroom as well if that's your gig. I play anything and everything from limit and NL ring games to single and multi table tourneys. Due to the limited bankroll at first I may be playing the smaller limits but that's ok as there are more fish there anyhow. While I was writing this I played 2 $20 SNG's one of which I busted out 9th and the other I took 2nd leaving me with a profit of $16. I feel like a jouralist getting paid to write about the game I love. Anyhow, I'll be dropping in often to leave updates for everyone and I hope to see you all at the tables. Feel free to ask me anything. Starting bankroll as of 7:30 p.m. central time on June 9th is $807.95. -stocktrader23 |

Summary of June 10th, 2004 DAY 1
I didn't get to play as much as I wanted today but I did get in a few small sessions. Started out the day with 3 $20 buy in SNG's and lost all 3 of them! Talk about ouch. Finished in 7th, 8th, and 10th place. Not a great start. After taking a loss on all 3 of the SNG's I played a 20 minute session of 1/2 limit at a 6 max table. When I quit for lunch I was up $26.45. I don't play very many limit games these days and the terrible play here was quite refreshing. I love the fact that most people have no idea how to play a short table. They either show too much aggression with weak hands or not enough on their strong hands. I know this was a very low limit but the higher limits are hardly any better. After lunch I spent some time with my wife then sat back down for a little poker. I decided to try another $20 SNG and someone from the forum actually stopped by to talk while I was playing. I ended up finishing 1st in this one which took some of the sting out of the 3 losses from earlier in the day. My son got home from daycare soon after I finished this tourney so I ended the session to spend time with him and visit my parents. The last session I played was in the evening and I decided to give the $30 3 table sit and go's a run. The first one I played I had built a stack of around $2000 chips when I was dealt KK. I raise it to $600. Everyone folds but 1 who moves all in for around $1500. I call and he turns over AA. Now I could have folded to the all in bet and tried to make a comeback with my $1400 chips but in these tourneys he could have easily held any pocket pair, AK, AQ, or even AX. I did manage to build my $500 remaining chips back to $2000 when I'm dealt QQ with 15 players remaining. I raise 700 and someone moves all in again. I reluctantly called to see them turn over KK. Now this hand I would normally fold to any respectable player but the tables had combined recently and I had no experience with his play. I called feeling I may be behind and I was right. Should have thrown it away, instead I went out 15th. I decided to enter one more $30 3 table tourney before I called it a night. Didn't take notes on this tourney but I ended up 3rd winning $180. Starting balance for June 10th $807.95 Ending balance $960.40 Profit/Loss for the day +$152.45 SNG= Single Table No Limit Tourney. |

10-20k profit? HAHAHA>.. thats the biggest pipe dream I have ever heard in my life. You sound like your a descent player, My guess is you'll break even, or at best maybe take home a K.
But what's with the documentation? |
He is playing at www.partypoker.com
But, feel free to play at www.pokerboat.com :winkwink: This is very interesting to me, I will be watching and I will look for you at PP!!! Good Luck Bring on the Aces!!! :thumbsup I might even try to play with you:) |
Very interesting. Having never played *onine* poker, my first take is it's similar to video poker, which I don't like since odds are manipulated and you don't have an oportunity to read your opponent. But I might give it a shot when I get back from vacation in a week... Good luck!

I also Play quite often at POker Stars and Party Poker.
I am now having a decent additional income from my game, but it took me 4 months and losing close to $5000.00 to reach this point. Party Poker is a fish tank but Poker Stars is really tough to beat even at low limit. However I love the challenge and it is a great place to learn and improve your game. My stonger games are NL holdem and Stud Hi-lo, Omaha 8B comes in a distant third place. I really suck at PL omaha. Good luck and keep us posted about how you do :thumbsup |
Does anyone know anywhere online or offline that you can learn the ropes of poker without money being involved ? I've recently become really interested in poker, I love watching all the big poker tourneys on television and I'm quite interested in playing now but I'd like to learn without losing a load of money

good luck man.. those all-ins are harsh when you have KK and see AA.
|
stocktrader, I wish you the best man, but honestly your early exits from the SNG's are not a good sign of what is to come.
To explain why, here is a little anecdote.... Someone once asked T.J. Cloutier if he had AA in the pocket with 3 total players left on the final table at Binions (World Series of Poker), would TJ always go all-in? Cloutier's answer was a quick, resounding "No"! So what was his reasoning? Player 1 has almost the same amount of chips as Player 2 (TJ Cloutier being Player 3). If player 1 AND player 2 both went all in, the tournament would be practically over for one of them, and TJ Cloutier would earn his way to a 2nd place prize .... by folding before the flop with AA! |
my dad is a pro poker player he has played with the best
