Can a girl learn how to dance?

I have absolutely no dancing skill (no empty flattery please, this is not me fishing for a compliment). I've watched the music videos, I've watched other girls on the dance floor at the club, but still my friends just snicker at me. It's not quite as bad as Elaine from Seinfeld, but... well, how would a girl who is too old to sign up for jazzercise learn how to dance whatever is hip and trendy? Any thoughts?

As the learned Juicy says, "Discuss."

start with the Horizontal Bop, and slowly work your way up.

polish_aristocrat 06-07-2004 02:50 AM

I think I've mastered that particular step. I am interested in the vertical kinds of dancing now. :winkwink:

Yes, but a guy can (usually) just ask his girl to teach him or just flat out refuse to dance. :)

I love to dance, but I rather dislike being laughed at. :helpme

Ah, I love it when complete strangers call me little nicknames.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

A girl can learn to dance if she hires someone to learn her ...

No thoughts but how about some commiseration? I am a terrible dancer as well. :1orglaugh

REALLY BAD.

That's right - my GF taught me 90% of the dancing "moves". I've been a good student though :winkwink:

Theres classes for adults too. Your never too old to learn.
One of my friends is a dance instructor. Known him since grade 6. Come to Calgary and he'll teach you.

Arousal Design 06-07-2004 04:46 AM

Dancing is tough. Either you can do it, or you can't. Dancing isn't about steps, or particular moves that's only half of it. The other half is a natural flow with the rhythm that you either have or you don't. Either you can naturally move to a beat, or you look awkward and silly doing it and that's just something that's near impossible to teach.

I can dance but just prefer not to unless surrounded by a group of girls at a club.

Awww.. bad dancers of the world, unite!

Stroge, I can do ballroom dancing, just not the hiphop/stripper dance/whatever that women do these days. I have yet to see lessons for that particular style.

My dad has been taking west coast swing lessons for years (picking up hot chicks, of course). I happen to know for a fact that my man would NOT be open to taking lessons with me, though. hrm.

I hear ya. Either I get better or just less self-concious when I drink.. I prefer to think I loosen up enough to actually dance better. :Graucho

Yeah, we're all born knowing how to apply makeup and do hair, too. *rolls eyes*

bizmak 06-07-2004 04:56 AM

I always thought that dancing was a good indication of sexual performance. if your good at dancing, you should be good at sex. but maybe I should rethink that for those chicks that cant dance ... :winkwink:

TurboAngel 06-07-2004 05:06 AM

I can't dance, I have no rhythm.

:(

emmanuelle 06-07-2004 05:08 AM

You mean Dirty Dancing wasn't real?

hijaker 06-07-2004 05:17 AM

you just have to learn.
Try a dance school
Go for Latin-american dances
You'll love it

If you want to really learn how to move your body (and just various parts of it), try bellydance :Graucho

While I'm a musical person, I've never been a particularly good dancer. I always dreamed of doing some kind of beautiful physical art form, like ballet, but don't have anywhere near the body for it. Then I discovered bellydancing. Aside from the art itself which I am now completely addicted to, it definitely helps with feeling the music and moving your body.

StuartD 06-07-2004 08:38 AM

I can play the drums... keep 3 or 4 different beats all going at the same time to a perfect tempo... but I can't dance to save my life.

It just doesn't happen. Tapping my foot is about as close to dancing as I'll ever be able to get.

Get one of those Latin Dance Instructors to teach you how to Salsa...

I think I saw that in a movie once :winkwink:

Tania 06-07-2004 08:42 AM

good luck Elli :thumbsup

I think that's likely a good idea. It would get you comfortable with dancing, and you'll gain confidence in at least doing a specific type of dance.. and then you could try other forms of dance lessons. I'm sure some people aren't coordinated enough, but you can always learn and try. Best of luck. :)

Cheers,
Matt

that is so true! dancing isnt just something you DO, its something you FEEL. try not to be self conscious, close your eyes, feel the music and move with it. but if you are wanting to dance something that looks more choreographed, might want to try taking lessons :winkwink:

TheLegacy 06-07-2004 08:54 AM

start by slow dancing with someone.. then try to move out on your own.. feel the music..

mostly in the hips and arms... just learn the beat - if there are some music shows with dancers watch them and try it alone first.

but fear not.. there are alot worse dancers out there than you

Joesho 06-07-2004 08:55 AM

right after our naked yoga practice, we can move into the dance section if you would like..:Graucho

angeleyes 06-07-2004 09:17 AM

If you can unlearn, you can learn it. I used to be a great dancer about 15 years ago, now I suck. (Out of practice). Same with saking IMO, I used to be an award winning skater (locally) and I can't go one foot in skates anymore without falling on my ass. :helpme
