Brad Mitchell 06-04-2004 07:32 AM

ATTN: Hosts! Spam this guy with your offer if you want him... I'm passing!

After much correspondance, here's our last communications... if you think you can help the guy, please do! I've given him this URL to watch.

Him:

In order for our program to work we need the boxes to be capped at one meg each with no overages, windows licenses included month to month and windows based at 80 bucks per machine or lower. We will do 5 machines or more at this price.(no set up fees).

Me:

So basically what you're telling me is this:

Build 5 servers at a cost of around $750 each. Buy 5 windows 2003 licenses at $700 each. So, spend $7250 on setup to sell you 5 servers at $80 each or $400/month for an annual gross of $4800... to also give you 5 megabit per month of bandwidth for a whole year plus fully support and manage the servers while also eating the cost of power and rack space? That, and your sale is supposed to contribute supporting our entire network infrastructure?

I appreciate the time you've taken to communicate with me, but that's absurd. Especially when you're not going to pay setup or sign a contract.. all this and I'm supposed to take a leap of faith on your a business model that seems obvious to me that you don't have empiracle data that says even makes money. Topping this all off, there's no room for growth since you have asked all the servers be capped.

The math is simple and to provide what you're asking for I'd have to steal the servers off the back of a truck and steal a connection from another host's upstream provider. I think any host that would even entertain such an offer would have to be an absolute idiot. I understand that the economics of your business 'might' need this kind of pricing to work and wish you luck finding a host to do this for you.

For your benefit, I'm posting your request in a thread so that if there IS a host out there willing to give you what you're looking for that you have a better chance of finding them. Also, if some other host thinks *I'm* crazy you can laugh at me with them. LOL

Best of luck,

Brad

Actually, ev1servers.net normal prices are not far off from what he is looking for. You can get a Windows Machine for $99 per month, including 1,000 gigs of bw per machine, with no set-up

Magg 06-04-2004 08:25 AM

I dont care if there is a host out there who will give it to him..

Heres my offer:

empiracle is the new word of the day...

kmanrox 06-04-2004 08:32 AM

damnit brad, you spelled the word of the day wrong;

em·pir·i·cal P Pronunciation Key (m-pîr-kl)
adj.
Relying on or derived from observation or experiment: empirical results that supported the hypothesis.
Verifiable or provable by means of observation or experiment: empirical laws.
Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine.

Everyone puts so much value on "managed". All I can say is that I have used rackshack / ev1servers.net for the past 2 years. My worst server has been up for 589 days, with no down time. I can add or move new domains within minutes and their nameservers update within 5 hours.

And, if I want my servers to be kept up to date with patches, tweaks, ...., I simply put a post on their forum and usually get 5 or 10 offers, around $20 or so per machine.

Sorry guys, but I have been using dedicated servers in this biz since fall 2000, and I have tried most of the hosts that are reportedly the "best". And in my experience, nothing beats my 2 year experience with ev1servers.net.

P.S. And would I ever do business with anyone that showed the complete unprofessionalism displayed by the person starting this post. I tell ya, it would be a cold day in hell....
Who in their right mind would post a private customer request on a public board, just so they can make the customer look like a fool...

He was completely professional and his first sentence even pointed out that he provided the link to the "customer" so that he could watch the thread.

The customer asked for managed which was also pointed out, which is why I brought it up.

You have overly minimized the importance of a "properly" maintained box. Most, if not all people with no server administration experience or knowledge should not ever get an unmanaged box, or they can expect to pay heavily for these services.

I'm glad for you that you had luck at ev1. You are, however, one of the exceptions.

Brad Mitchell 06-04-2004 09:03 AM

49th Parallel-

Couple of things..

589 days of uptime with any version of RedHat? I'm assuming that is what you're on, I understand it might be some other flavor or Linux and this might be off the mark.. Dude, there's been kernal updates that would have required a reboot.

The difference in pricing for managed versus unmanaged at my company is truly token, as is the case at most hosts. Even if the servers were unmanaged those price points would still be absurd.

Finally, I call BS on the "unprofessionalism" comment. I didn't post any of his contact info nor did I offer to give that out. The point of the thread was not to humiliate the guy that asked for the offer, it was to accomplish two things.

1) Teach him the economics of the situation.
2) Challenge every host that visits GFY to maybe find one that can help him.

Spending the time to reply as I did and making the extra effort to try and get the guy hooked up goes above and beyond in my opinion. Most hosts would have said 'No' and given zero explanation or offer of assistance to help the customer find another solution. I emailed him a link to this thread and I do sincerely hope someone can hook him up.

There's a reason why nobody on GFY (except you) hates me
:winkwink:

hehe

Cheers,

Brad

LOL..

I have seen worse.. I have seen worse.

49thParallel 06-04-2004 09:11 AM

Yes, kernal updates, ensim updates and the like do require a reboot. But, I do not consider that downtime. And, as I am sure you too conduct these updates on a regular basis. So I doubt that you consider this downtime either. I have not had an "unexpected" incidence of downtime since part way into the second month of the server I mentioned above, And even in that case, ev1 rebooted my server within 6 minutes.

The point of my reply...you asked for hosts to match the customer's requests. ev1servers.net can. And as I pointed out, hire yourself one fo the many server gurus on the ev1server forums to do updates and such, and it won't cost you much more then $20 bucks a month per machine.

I am not in any way a server guru. I use the forums for info, and let the hired guns do my upgrades. So, for a real total of about $130 per month, I get a great machine, great bandwidth...and 1,000 gigs of transfer.

P.S. Don't take it personally. I spend as much time in mainstream business as I do in the adult industry. And I am always taken aback by what is considered proper business etiquette in this biz.

Brad Mitchell 06-04-2004 09:25 AM

Fair enough. Hopefully EV1 can help him!

However, uptime is uptime. Saying 589 days makes it sounds like the server has had uninterrupted service for that entire length of period, which it has not... hopefully, because maintenance is required. The only reason I called you out on that is because not doing so perpetuates the idea for some that there isn't ever an acceptable reason for downtime or that some hosting providers have pixie dust in their arsenal of tools. LOL

Cheers,

Brad

And to be fair, I noticed that after all costs are accounted for, ev1 also doesn't meet this fella's price point. And you are also correct, unmanaged is certainly not for everyone. So, the added cost a customer pays for managed, knowing that he/she doesn't have to know squat about the server is probably worth it to those who don't want to get their hands dirty.

Take care.

<IMX> 06-04-2004 09:44 AM

You're wrong on uptime, but I don't think that undermines your argument.

For some cases their are hosts that can do the job for cheap, and premium hosts won't/can;t afford to always compete on price. they can and do offer premium service that is necessary in some cases, for some ppl, but not for everyone and every project.

...But nat net does have "beat" anybody sales once a year where they do match ev1.net prices.

+ your biz etiquette statement is dead-on.

Brad, I'm kind of pissed off here. After all the one-on-one host bonding between Phat and Mojo in Atlanta, the least you could have done is send him directly to me so I could personally tell him he's out of his fucking mind.

Next time you want to pass off a "good" client, I'll be more than happy to take them. :)

I agree with your statement that if you KNOW how to manage a server, EV1 is a great deal. However, I left Rackshack long ago because of the small, isloated network outages that were almost weekly. Just a few mins here and there but my MRTG would show nose dives for short periods of time.

They are unbelievable value for what you get, unfortunately, just to provide an alternate Non-Host opinion, their product didnt' offer the network stability that I would like for my sites. But I'm SURE lots of people are happy with them.

I can't keep up with everyone's GFY handles, real names, company names, etc... Who the heck are ya? I would only know you by your real name because that's what I change people to on my ICQ list and how I keep the records :)

Only (sadly) this one is for real.

If this guy's business model is based on getting hosting at below-cost, he needs to go back to the drawing board.
