having my first wisdom tooth pulled in two weeks.....

i've yet to hear any It Went Well stories from anyone that's had any pulled, i opted for the total knock-out but fear the whole dry socket possibility. oddly, they are coming in about 8 years late.

hold me, i'm scared.

pray for 'snowcone' roots. :)

SR 04-19-2004 04:51 PM

I wouldn't go for a full nock-out.
I had one pulled a few weeks ago by my dentist.
Justa few local shots........ I didn't feel shit..... he got it out in a few minutes which is pretty quick but even if it takes longer it shouldn't hurt.
I was "scared" to go but after all it wasn't all that bad.
Didn't use painkillers or so afterwards.
I wouldn't worry too much.

really? hmmmm, i'll be talking to my dentist a bit more about this. he did say he didn't think i'd need general anesthesia but could have it if i wanted it.

i suppose i could have him gas me after we've started if things got too hairy, hahah.

I got them taken out when I was 20. Like you too, I heard alot of horror stories of shit going wrong and how people had permanant nerve damage and shit. Basically mine went thru just fine. 2 of mine were impacted so they had to cut under the skin for those. I just opted for local anesthsia. The first 2 days were the worest as I was not able to get any good painkillers but after that it was smooth sailing. No worries :thumbsup

that's good to hear, thank you for sharing. i plan on sleeping for the first day or two, it'll take my mind off of not being able to eat anything.

i'll be all set with pain pills but i hate taking them for longer than 24-48 hours, anything stronger than an Advil instantly makes me tired. :winkwink:

LoriAnderson 04-19-2004 06:16 PM

I had all 4 of mine pulled at the same time..... I was able to go out to dinner the next night.. I had no problems what so ever... hopefully you'll recover as quickly as I did.

:)

good luck babe

Missy 04-19-2004 06:17 PM

I had all four of mine pulled at once (2 hadn't even broken thru yet) and I didn't have a single problem. Usually the people that I hear about that have problems afterwards are those who have them done by a dentist rather than an oral surgeon.

If I were you though, I'd have them all done at once. Chances are, if you have to have one pulled now, you'll have to go through it again in another couple of years (and maybe even a 3rd & 4th time). Costs a little more, but it's a lot cheaper than having to go back 3 or 4 times. Better to get it all over with at once. :2 cents:

angeleyes 04-19-2004 06:17 PM

I had 3 of mine out, I'm still holding one hostage. I was knocked out for 2 of them and I was fine 1 day later. I was awake for the third one and it sucked, but it still felt fine 1 day later. Ask for some Norco and you will feel no pain.

webgurl 04-19-2004 06:21 PM

get it done and overwith darling .... i am lucky got mine out years ago !!
:thumbsup

I am a complete chicken in the dentists chair, but trust me on this, a nice mixture of nitrous oxide, novacaine, dark glasses so you don't see anything flashing by and headphones playing anything and you will have nothing to worry about. :thumbsup

Just keep lots of sterile gauze around to stuff in your face, and rinse your mouth every couple of hours with salt water. If you have an OK dentist, you should have a nice script of Vicoden waiting for you when its all finished.

Trust me, I have faceplanted enough times learn this all the hardway, all this time no dry sockets yet. :thumbsup

CrazyNakedChick 04-19-2004 06:25 PM

interesting, i never considered an oral surgeon before. i'm very rural and dentists alone are a rare thing here. money is not an object as they are the only teeth i am going to have and am very willing to fork over a few hundred more to have it done right. i will certainly look into this more first thing tomorrow morning.

ok you guys, you all have me thinking this is going to go smoothly. if it turns out to be total hell which one of you is going to come over and feed soup through a straw? :winkwink:

Materialist 04-19-2004 06:27 PM

I'm having all four removed in three weeks.

Nasty D 04-19-2004 06:30 PM

I hope you have a smooth time a the dentist CrazyNakedChick! I just like saying your name!!

I had to get mine pulled on two seperate days, the second appointment I almost didn't go. I am a bleeder I guess, anyways good luck and stock up on some ice cream! :)

Spunky 04-19-2004 06:36 PM

I actually didn't have a problem at all.I guess I was lucky cause he just yanked them out with no problems.I took maybe 3 tylenol and thats all I needed.Just don't fiddle with the socket with your tounge and don't smoke for 2 weeks :) I'll still hold your hand for support :Graucho

TurboAngel 04-19-2004 06:38 PM

Make some jello and forget about the pain.

:thumbsup

bignasty 04-19-2004 06:39 PM

I never had mine pulled and they came in with no problems. I chipped one a few years back and it gives me a tootache at night. Gotta go thursday to get it pulled.

very best of luck to you. :thumbsup

i'll be asking about having all of mine done at once (when i find an oral surgeon tomorrow morning), it seems logical to me to suffer once knowing i'll never have to go through it again.

cluck 04-19-2004 06:41 PM

I had all 4 at once. Got a bigass bottle of vicodin but never even took a tylenol for it. Didn't hurt at all.

monica 04-19-2004 06:52 PM

I had two of mine taken out while put under... and the whole experience went just fine. No problems whatsoever... other than you wake up groggy and your face is swollen. If you remember to take your pain meds on time, you won't feel a thing.

And then I had two that were out of the gums, so I had them pulled like you would any other tooth. Didn't hurt, no swelling, no problems.

It's not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be.

Ash@phpFX 04-19-2004 09:50 PM

i had all of mine taken out when i was 13, the xrays showed that the roots were pretty massive so the dentist said i had to go under to get them out, he wouldnt do it under local anesthetic.

i told my parents i wanted to go local and keep the difference in the $$$ lol

stev0 04-19-2004 09:51 PM

that's sucks... i'm sure i'll be joining the club soon.

It's really nothing.

you lay in a chair and they put a mask on your face and you close your eyes.
then you open them and it's done. It feels like it took 1 second but you were knocked out.

You feel a little tightness in the back of your mouth and you feel dizzy so you go home and you go to bed.
a week later you accidentally swallow your stiches and it's all over. I didn't feel a thing when I got mine done.

what's a dry socket? i'm only 25 and my wisdom tooth are starting to come out and they aren't coming out straight so i might have to get them pulled in the future.

My first one, I had no problems at all! Very little pain even.
Then I had the rest pulled....different story!
With just one, I'm sure you'll be fine! Goodluck

I had them all yanked at the same time, they gave me demerol and ibeprofin 600 and I didn't feel shit. I got a dry socket in both of the lowers 2 days later and that stung a bit but the drugs worked in a good combo. Maybe you can ask for that combo. I came home, slept a few hours, then ate a double cheeseburger form McDonalds, lol.

Pretty much my experience. The next day I was able to eat anything I wanted, just chewed on the other side a day or 2 to avoid anything poking the extraction area. Was only aware it was done when I'd poke it with my tongue.
