Half of the worlds nobel peace prize winners and almost every notable top scientist in his field signed a global declaration in 1992 warning we have as little as 10 years to reverse the spiraling trends of global destruction before ALL LIFE ON EARTH IS IRRETRIEVABLY LOST FOREVER. Actually I do care man - even if it doesn't happen in my time. I was just taking the typical greedy capitalist approach. The Biggest Problem

I don't know how accurate this article is, so take what it says with a grain of salt. That being said, if it *is* right -- our biggest and most imminent threat is something that 99.9% of thhe population doesn't even know exists...and it makes global warming look like a walk in the park.

A summary for those that don't bother reading the site:
Global oil production follows a bell curve, while Earth's population is growing at an exponential rate. Some say that we are now, or will soon be (we're talking 5-10 years here), at the world's peak oil production. So as we approach the downslope of Earth's oil production, and oil grows more and more expensive to refine as the yield grows even smaller -- Earths population will begin to crash.

Why will it crash? Because -- if you didn't know already -- pretty much every existing industry out there requires oil to run with any effectiveness. Agriculture, water purification, sanitation, manufacting and producing metals and plastics...the list is really endless.

So basically if you choose to believe the article, the Earth is pretty much fucked by the year 2035 -- and thats if you're optimistic. And, if you're a REAL conspiracy theorist; all this talk of peak oil will just give you more proof of Bushes real agenda in the Middle East...because when we hit the downslope of the hypothetical curve, prepare to see Oil Prices 4-5 times higher than what they are now.

Edit: To all those that said our society is unstable as it is - if everything above is true, it will be chaos on a global scale. Even I'm a little bit scared now. Might be time to start looking for some nice property in Montana, and stocking up on food, water, and ammo. :1orglaugh

this is so much more important than terrorism. and the government CAN fix this. they need to organise a 'Manhatten Project' for a renewable, safe ebergy source. this would basically involve locking a thousand of the world's best scientists in a camp in nevada with the best technology money can buy and telling them to come up with a solution or we are all fucked. it worked for the atom bomb and it can work for this.

but no, instead of doing something like this, bush is spending money on- Mars, Terrorism, $1.90 per week tax cuts.

i won't even go into the relationship between the bush administration and big oil.... if oil reserves are the problem, bush is not the right person to be in there right now.

Couldn't agree more. Our entire way of life is based off of a non-renewable resource. And the sad thing about the alternate power sources we use now -- they either:

a.) require oil to mine, refine, or operate (coal, nuclear)
b.) are also non renewable resources (nuclear, natural gas)
c.) cannot fit the manufacturing, production, and industrial uses that oil currently does (pretty much everything else)
and
d.) Could never be adapted to provide energy on the global scale that oil does to maintain current population (solar, wind)

If a suitable alternate energy source is NOT found, and soon - then we are fucked. And by the time the majority of the population realizes the problem, it will be too late.

The fundies will think that this is their deity's plan.
