Embryos and Fetuses Will Now Have Legal Rights as a Person Independent of the Mother
The Senate just passed The Unborn Victims of Violence Act. President Bush says he will sign it into law.
This would be the first time in federal law that an embryo or fetus is recognized as a separate and distinct person under the law, separate from the woman. Abortion rights lawmakers contend that giving a fetus, from the point of conception, the same legal rights as its mother sets a precedent that could be used in future legal challenges to abortion rights. The bill states that an assailant who attacks a pregnant woman while committing a violent federal crime can be prosecuted for separate offenses against both the woman and her unborn child. The legislation defines an "unborn child" as a child in utero, which it says "means a member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb." |

Um...how are they going to contact a lawyer and file papers?

GOD BLESS PRESIDENT BUSH
HE IS AN ANGEL TO US LET US GIVE HIM PRAISE |
What I love most about Bush is how he is slowly taking away all of our rights and civil liberties in the name of the religious right.
Love that. |
Good in terms of punishing violent crimes, but the danger to abortion rights is so much greater.
|
I want my sperms to have the same rights....:Graucho

Is he starting to feel the heat? They are passing a heck of alot of laws these days that are taking away your freedom......is he trying to get everything signed, sealed and delivered before he gets out?
Edit: I don't have a problem with the fetus being treated as a human.....it's the consequences that may arise regarding abortion that worries me. |
One nation under the gun
Where forward thinking is shunned A morbid tradition Of archaic value systems Where violence justified Is just another pride Under the surface lies A holy plastic empire With guarded golden fences Where misfortune Shelters decisions A pain wrought from blood flowing green The myth of protection Is a sick fascination A culture of violence is what you are feeding Fear is an heirloom And hate is contagious A nation of sadists is what you are breeding It's everywhere It's everywhere that you see But who decides If you watch or turn the other cheek And only in your mind Is it your given right to be armed to the teeth It's a common disease The only immunity is to disarm This holy plastic empire disease :glugglug |

So under this law, if a woman wants an abortion and her husband/boyfriend disagrees and she goes ahead with it:
1) Can she be accused of murder? 2) Is it her choice to keep it or to abort it? Do the laws change if the baby will be born with a disease/handicap & the husband/boyfriend opposes the abortion? |

Its hard to imagine one load has more sperm than the entire US population. :1orglaugh |
very interesting! I wonder how this will turn out on such projects as cloning and abortion
|
What if the fetus doesn't want to be a fetus? It didn't have a choice in the first place ... :warning That just opens up waaaayy too many open ends...

Nothing could be farther from the truth. It has nothing to do with abortions. And your poor Bush haters better find a better cause than this one - you're just showing that again you haven't done your homework. Geeeze people - do a little research - watch the news a little bit. |
I don't understand those republicans. In my neighborhood, they should be running prime time commercials for abortion, let alone want to outlaw it.
|
whatever happens, lawyers look like the early winners here.

Come to canada, we have plenty of room. Just not in toronto please.. no room left there.. :1orglaugh

great so now we will go back to the days of back alley abortions ...
Go Bush you're a true hero .. wow what a great week this has been, First Tenn banns being gay... Then Georga bans female genitle pericings and now george bush will ban abortions... What a great week for our country.. Soon we'll all be singing in our local church's quire and be good little angles for the Reglious Reich.. |
Things that can happen now, you have a fender bender with a pregnant woman. She gets so upset from the accident she loses the baby (Baby lose is very high in the first trimester). You are now on trial for man slaughter. You trip into a pregnant woman at the mall she falls loses the baby . You are on trial for man slaughter. You have a model at shoot you use toys on her ,she doesnt know she is pregnant . She loses the baby ,you are on trial for manslaughter. We are also not taking 7 months in big stomach ,this counts four weeks in. This is dangerious shit.

I hope this ends up getting rid of abortion. Fuck the sluts, let them become responsible for their actions. |
Imagine you're a pregnant chick, walking down the street..
with full intention of having the the child inside you. imagine a mugger comes up tries to grab your purse which you've got strapped on defensively, and you're inadvertently knocked to the ground landing stomach first, the mugger panics and flees but is later caught. Imagine as a result of landing on your stomach, you end up having a miscarriage, losing the child you fully intended bringing into this world. What would you want the mugger charged with? Attempted robbery? Assault? Didn't think so. |

Fine - keep crying about this and abortion even though it has nothing to do it with, ignore the provisions put in protecting legal abortions, and continue to be uninformed. It had been known all day of the provision protecting legal abortion - why didn't you know that? And Bush makes the laws in Tenn. and GA. now too? my you are well informed aren't you? |
Every single law Bush will sign will have a valid reasoning. But you can't see the big picture if you stand only 2 inches from it.

I give it less than 6 months for the 1st case to hit the court rooms but I'm sure it will be sooner. After all if the law states that a embryo is a living person with rights, it would be hard to abort it with out saying it's murder now wouldn't. |

Do some research OR watch some new.... I don't watch much TV myself - but I do try to keep up with what is going on. There are several ways to get news. I am not aware however of any degrees being offered in watching TV - must be somethere you have where you live. Thanks for your input, it has been invaluable. |
