Filmmaker eats McDonald's for a month and nearly dies

http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/01/279198.shtml

The film is called Super Size Me: A Film of Epic Proportions and the director, Morgan Spurlock, at only McDonald's food (not the healthy stuff) for 3 meals a day for a month. If a server asked him if he'd like to supersize his meal he had to accept, and eat every bit of food on his plate. Within a few days of starting the experiment he was vomiting up his meals and battling headaches and depression.

After the monthlong experiment he had gained a ton of weight and his cholesterol had risen from 165-230. His liver was nearly ready to give out at the end of the month. Disgusting.

sworld 01-28-2004 10:31 AM

I imagine he did. I read a separate article that said the team of doctors following him around advised him to stop the experiment after three weeks for his own health.

GonePhishing 01-28-2004 10:39 AM

That is insane. So all the human body can take is one month of McDonalds?

Vitasoy 01-28-2004 10:39 AM

what a dumbass! I'd watch the documentary though :winkwink:

Our site is much different because the content is real. No setups and we've received alot of media attention because of it.

Best of luck with that site in the future, seems hilarious :)

When I was in high school I had a cheeseburger and fries every single school day for 4 years straight. Then at least a couple nights a week I'd have it again for supper.

I'm sure you'll be healthy as a horse after that. I just finished the Olive Garden diet and I've never felt better.

Sometimes that shit tastes pretty good. I like me some deep fried nuggets. And now they're white meat!

dirtyone 01-28-2004 11:21 AM

I wonder what he ate for the month. Was it strictly Big Macs and fries or did he eat thier salads and things like that too to create variety.

Eating nothing but lettuce and water for a month would be just as bad.

Any fool that eats nothing but McDonalds every day or any fast food for that matter deserve what they get.

It's all about personal responsiblity which is a concept most people don't seem to grasp anymore.

BobChezule 01-28-2004 11:23 AM

He didn't eat the salads or anything like that. He was eating off the meal menu. And he was doing it to show that America's eating habits are out of control.

Brat 01-28-2004 11:23 AM

I like the grilled chicken there. I'm not big on the burgers there. Once every few years, I'll have a big mac. But this thread says he ate the bad stuff not the healthy and the chicken is somewhat healthier than the big mac as far as i know.

WankTank 01-28-2004 11:26 AM

that is disgusting.
mcdonalds is evil, and the dudes prolly gonna end up with cancer on top of all this.

Manowar 01-28-2004 11:28 AM

everyone knows MaccyDs aren't good for you. no-one eats them for a month solid - what is this proving ?

He's proving how monumentally bad it is for you. He nearly died. I don't think anyone guessed that McDonald's food was that bad for you. Plus, he's a filmmaker, so he's out to entertain with his movie, and I'm guessing that's what he did.

LadyMischief 01-28-2004 11:32 AM

That's really gross.. Good thing we don't have McD's often.. Even though I'm sure the kids would love it, I'd rather stuff them full of Broccoli , baby carrots and black olives (which are their favorite foods)

quiet 01-28-2004 11:32 AM

i fucking hate mcdicks. nasty.

Mutt 01-28-2004 11:34 AM

this guy sounds like another Michael Moore, making shit up as he goes along to make his documentary more interesting.

absolutely ridiculous, a healthy person could exist on nothing but McDonald's for years. It's not a great diet obviously and over time it will affect your health but no worse than the diet of many people already, me included.

i hope McDonald's comes out and does their own experiment, takes some regular Joe's between 20-40 and feed them nothing but McD food - there won't be any health crisis with any of them.

Shok 01-28-2004 11:34 AM

I guess he didn't order the diet coke with his meals.

once a week? Try once a month - and even that is pushing it.

The dude at the kind of food at McDonald's that most Americans go there to eat. The burgers, fries, nuggets, that kind of crap. If you ate a veggie burger at McDonald's every day you'd be fine, but that's not what he did. He stuffed his face with the kind of food McDonald's makes their money on.

Yeah I'm sure McDonalds is going to get right on that. :1orglaugh

No human can survive on McD's for a year, let alone several. They would die, period. When a truly healthy person eats McDonalds one time they get an upset stomach at best. I can't believe you actually think it's food, let's go get a nice combo of mealworm and chemicals for the kids!

Of course it's bad for you. If you eat nothing Big Macs for a month then yes, that is bad but not taking into account the other offerings they have such as grilled chicken sandwhiches and salads is kinda one sided don't you think.

And as I said before eating nothing but (insert your own food here) and and water for a month is just as bad.

Try your own experiment at home. Eat your own home cooked hamburgers and fries for a month straight every meal and see how you feel.

Mutt 01-28-2004 11:49 AM

i don't believe it. he went into this knowing how he wanted this 'experiment' to turn out.

a neutral third party, like 60 Minutes or 20/20, should get three people and do the same thing and compare. I'm sure three super-sized meals of McDonalds burgers n fries a day for a month will make u fatter, if you don't exercise which this guy probably doesn't, and your cholestrol could increase - but this shit about him almost dying and liver failure - bullshit. for somebody who is relatively healthy going into this experiment.

has McDonalds commented yet on this? if i were them i would because i've heard this story a bunch of time already on and offline. they should hire somebody from the tobacco industry. i used to love listening to those people, still claiming that there is no evidence tobacco actually causes cancer.

He filmed it back in 2002, and I believe at that time they still didn't have all the healthy options on their menu.

It's definitely a one sided deal, but like I said before, most people go into McDonald's for a burger, not a veggie burger. That's what he's getting at I believe.

don't be ridiculous - there are people who live on worse than McDonald's - u really don't understand how hard it is to die of natural causes until you are at least into your 40's and usually into your 50's. That's how long it takes for bad nutrition, booze, tobacco, obesity to do its work. You do not die of eating McDonalds for a year straight. There are tons of people on here who like to brag about how much they drink - alcohol destroys your liver - BUT it still takes decades of alcoholism before people get cirhossis of the liver. This guy is full of shit when he says a month of McDonalds food put him into liver failure.

You're wrong. He didn't lie to pump up his film. And he's not the one who said it hurt his liver, it was his team of doctors who said he was endangering himself. Three meals a day from McDonald's amounts to probably 200 grams of fat a day, which is way above what you should be eating. Add to that the calories and the lack of any nutritional value and you can see where he might have had a problem.

I meant that on an extreme scale, some people eat that shit a couple times a week....i think once a month is way to often also...I myself wouldnt touch that shit unless it was the last thing available and would still be thinking about it...the things i have heard and seen have repulsed me....this movie will be a defenite eye opener, and whoever thinks they can survive on this type of food should really think again
