Car insurance is FUCKIN NUTS!

Well lookin for a car for the winter (nothin special cause I gotta put down a lot for my mortgage in a bit over a year) and was looking at insurance and its fuckin nuts!

Was lookin here btw

I cannot get anything insured under $8,000 a year. I am 19, with no experience but that is fuckin insane!! For something a bit niceer (a G35 lets say) I am lookin at over $12k!! :feels-hot

Is it as bad for you guys?

* all prices in Canadian dollars.

hyper 11-29-2003 09:57 PM

That's insane. Can't you just get insured under your parents?

twistyneck 11-29-2003 09:58 PM

I pay $33 a month, full coverage. :321GFY

2 cars, 2 drivers ... so i gotta be the primary on one of them.

GTS Mark 11-29-2003 09:59 PM

You think it is bad here try BC!!

Fuck I was paying $389 a month for my Audi S4. I doubt I will pay anything over $150 a month for it now that I am back in Ontario.

Being young and a new driver totally fucking sucks. What I would suggest is to get the car in your parent's name so then they can write you down as a secondary/occasional driver. Then it would be a lot less.

DH

P.S. The G35 is a pretty pimp ride, I had a blast driving around a friend's.

Brad-Wishing 11-29-2003 09:59 PM

You must have been in about 700 accidents for that to happen.
When I got insured with my first car it was $2,400 a year for a new Cavalier.

Sosa 11-29-2003 10:00 PM

Wow guys... I only pay $1200 a year for full coverage on my 00 escalade and I'm only 21.

Za Ha 11-29-2003 10:00 PM

No accidents. Got my licence bout 3 weeks ago.

Nebraska has cheap insurance just like here. Just across the border I was paying $120 a month.

hottoddy 11-29-2003 10:02 PM

I pay full coverage for two 2003 vehicles - $115/month (Coscto/Amex). I'm also a geezer (34) with a perfect record and both cars are moderately priced (15 & 22K).

liquidmoe 11-29-2003 10:02 PM

I had the same quotes except in American dollars not Canadian for my 328Ci. Put yourself on as a secondary driver and if possible find a friend who is in a better residential area which could get you lower rates and redo your paper work through them. Just make it legit and that can sometimes bring you some significant savings.

Gruntled 11-29-2003 10:02 PM

Definitely go under you parents policy. You have to lie to the insurance company, but if you don't they will have you over the barrel and will be pupin' and sweatin' before you know what happened.

bushwacker 11-29-2003 10:04 PM

you must be one bad ass driver!

SicChild 11-29-2003 10:04 PM

I'm in Alberta and I paid $6,100(CND)/year when I first insured my '79 vette....now I pay $4,200(CND)/year

Za Ha 11-29-2003 10:05 PM

Its not that im a bad driver, cause driving wise Im pretty good, the reason is cause I am a BRAND NEW driver. I will have to either wait or make MUCH more to afford this.

They're fucking you over... because they can.

I'm 20, insurance due in December will be the equivalent of $1200. That's with full no claims discount, clean license, no tickets/offences, travelling 15000 miles per year (what with my university being in the next city)...

I was once going to buy an SLK230 but was quoted over £16k (around $25k) for 1 year insurance by CIS. If I want insurance for a CL600, 911, Caterham 7, etc... they will not give it to me until I'm 25.

I'm all for regular testing and practical driving assessments, in a range of places (e.g, city centre & rush hour & motorway & open country), to drive down insurance costs. It should at least flush out the overly timid drivers that cause a shitload of accidents (like those people -- mostly women and the elderly -- who try to merge into motorway traffic by driving 30MPH, ahaha). Terrible consequences.

qwe 11-29-2003 10:12 PM

well im 20 with 3 years of experience and with 2 tickets... fuckers keep telling me $10,000 for 2001 bmw 330ci... if i go under my parents name as secondary will be around 5-6k which is what im going to do very soon...

Veterans Day 11-29-2003 10:14 PM

brizzad 11-29-2003 10:17 PM

G35's are bad ass dude

ldinternet 11-29-2003 10:17 PM

Oh yeah, when I bought my first car, the insurance was the equivalent of $2000 for a 1998 Citroen. A few months later I bought a new one, and it went up by $100.

Of course the idea seems to be, the smaller the engine, the lower the insurance (generally). Maybe you should get a Nissan Micra or Fiat Cinquecento, etc. :glugglug :1orglaugh

Try living in Vegas...it's wicked expensive here. I drive a 2003 Corolla and my car insurance is $150/month and that's a good rate. My husband's is $225/month. Vegas sucks for insurance, but in this city, better have the best coverage. :)

That car came out to:

Annual Rate: $10114

Honeyslut 11-29-2003 10:45 PM

My daughter who is almost 17 is $ 100 a month UNDER our plan. We have mulitiple car discount and student driver discount. The fuckers are still trying to raise it another $ 45 a month without waiting till the end of the 6 month pay period !

:321GFY our Insurance company of 17 years

Phil21 11-29-2003 10:51 PM

hmm..

Shit. it's about $2500/yr for me, just for basic-ass liability on a fucking VAN.

I looked at full coverage and it was $600+/mo. on a car valued at ~$4500.

I have one at-fault accident though way back when I first turned 18. No tickets at all though.

Sigh.

nofx 11-29-2003 10:53 PM

i pay $155 a month, an i'm 19

webgurl 11-29-2003 10:55 PM

hot diggity damn that is expensive are you sure thats the correct rate you got ?? ..... OH MY GOSH what province are you located ?

brizzad 11-29-2003 10:57 PM

after a wreck and a wreckless driving ticket, my insurance is still only like $100 a month on my cavalier

edit: but it's liability with a $500 deductable

Ic3m4nZ 11-29-2003 11:02 PM

Ya dude I know it's fucking crazy I'm 18 and I gotta live with this shit anyway when you'll gain more experience prices are going to be lower.

But what is bothering me is that the girls (99% of the young girls I'll say here don't fucking know how to drive) and they pay half of what we pay this sucks.

some_idiot 11-30-2003 12:22 AM

Maybe late on this, hit up www.meritgroup.ca , ask for Sue Gibson
She's always done good by me and my friends.

...if you're in Ontario, not some shit provincial run twist your nuts
area run by government only insurance.

Gruntled 11-30-2003 12:29 AM

I only pay 60 bucks a month for mine. Beauty.

Mr Pheer 11-30-2003 12:40 AM

I pay $89 a month in Las Vegas for full coverage on a new BMW including a $1 million umbrella policy

If you guys can afford the nicer vehicles like corvettes, escalades, BMW, porsche etc you need an umbrella policy. Because when you get in an accident, that fucking punk kid that ran over you that works for Home Depot is gonna tell his parents what you were driving. Then they assume you must have loads of cash and assets. Then its lawsuit city against you regardless of who was at fault.

Yanks_Todd 11-30-2003 12:43 AM

Arizona is the worst for insurance man, a bunch of fucking snow bird drivers from Wisconsin causes that.
