Trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck???

Does anyone know the real story of the Charles Shaw Vineyard blowout at Trader Joe's....

I was told the bottles before the vineyard purchase had an asking price of up to $30.00

I had some over the weekend and I am not a wine snob..... but for $1.99 a bottle it tasted pretty damn good.

I am sure the wine experts will beg to differ..... but for a Corona and New Castle guy the Two buck Chuck was good enough.

Wizzo 10-14-2003 01:37 PM

I read about it, anyone willing to send me a case to try?

No Trader Joes here...:(

Flynn 10-14-2003 01:40 PM

i don't know the story, but 2 buck Chuck is really good.

Lensman 10-14-2003 01:40 PM

I tried that stuff a while back. Tastes the about same to me at $8 wine. Except that I don't drink $8 wine.

Mr. Jim 10-14-2003 01:41 PM

For Sure.....it was $24.99 for a case had a little gig in La Quinta over the weekend and we forgot the wine...walked into TJ's and just said Fuck it and grabbed a case....we even had compliments

I am not a big wine guy..... but the wine snobs reluctantly said it was passable.

I guess they are having a hard time keeping it in stock.

I do prefer a Cambria vineyard Wild Horse Merlot.....

lol.......that may be the most ridiculous thing I have ever said.....it is a good merlot though

SCJason 10-14-2003 01:45 PM

I heard it had somehting to with the estimated worth of the winery. He was in a divorce or somehitng. So he just basically gave it away. That was from and old lady paying for a case at the local Trader Joes.....who knows !?

I'm a former TJs employee with many remaining contacts. There are many rumors about Charles Shaw wine (divorce settlement, bankrupties, etc), but none are true. The real story is that there's a huge glut in CA wine production. The producer simply reached an agreement to sell vast amounts of product at an incredible price. It is a buyers market, and especially good for someone like TJ's that buys with cash in advance. It's not a once time buyout, but a continuing relationship with a producer with huge acreage (at least for the near future). At $1.99, TJs is making about .50 cents a bottle in profit. They have gained even more in publicity and new customers. There was a recent vintage turnover, and the new year isn't quite as good as the original two buck chuck. Still, it's easily a $10-15 bottle of wine.

I haven't tried it yet, every time I try to go to TJ's to get stuff, there's always an AJ's or a wine store in the way and I never make it...

The Chardonnay beat out a $70 bottle in a taste test comparison in wine spectator.

The red is not as good but then again for $2 how can u go wrong.

BradShaw 10-14-2003 03:42 PM

With a name like Shaw, you can not go wrong.

One of the morning shows tested it and most liked it better than the expensive stuff.

I wish they'd sell it here. :(

kristin 10-14-2003 04:00 PM

It's not good wine by any means, that shit we had was horrible. Maybe we got a bad batch or something, but I couldn't stand the taste and I can usually drink wine. I still have two bottles sitting downstairs....

I dunno about two buck chuck...but I do know that trader joe's is my favorite spot to buy wines...they've got some amazing australian wines there...which are my current fav's.

ZakAttack 10-14-2003 04:11 PM

I've heard about 2 buck Chuck before as well. I only drink wine occassionally, but 2 dollars does sound like ripple indeed. At some liquor stores, the ghetto wines like night train, thunderbird, etc... are some times more than 2 dollars.

Oh wells, whats good is good. Price is not always exactly connected to quality. Sometimes you get more than what you pay for just as much as you can get less.

sonomasnap 10-14-2003 04:17 PM

I am good friends with one of the very top buyers and the in-house councel at TJ's. I will ask and post the straight dope.

Cool!

I love to punch holes in urban myth's

make sure you post it

The best one I heard is that it was a divorce and the Charles Shaw Heir decided to give it to trader Joe's for :2 cents: on the dollar....
