Jay_StandAhead 08-28-2003 04:30 PM

My XP does that too, it annoys the fuck out of me...

It started when I installed SP1.

there's also the install shield wizard that hangs for 10 mins before installing or uninstalling shit :BangBang:

the hanging on install is from the system restore feature built into XP, what's probably happening is the system is setting a restore point, which can take forever.
You can disable it at
control panel>system>system restore

KMR Stitch 08-28-2003 04:41 PM

asuna 08-28-2003 05:50 PM

It's part of windows, the next windows will have a fix for it, so we'll have to buy that

michaelw 08-28-2003 07:00 PM

getting rid of system restore didnt help

iroc409 08-28-2003 07:03 PM

sometimes it's because windows doesn't like or isn't cooperating with something on your system. sorry it's not very specific, but it's sometimes the problem. and, of course, this can be both harware or software issues. if you haven't changed the hardware recently, i'd check your softwarez first.

Project-Shadow 08-28-2003 07:08 PM

start -> Run -> msconfig
check for any unusual shit in your startup tab

beemk 08-28-2003 07:15 PM

theres no hope, get a new computer

michaelw 08-29-2003 10:02 AM

still no luck.. any ideas? (and its not msconfig, that stuff loads up after someone logs in)

nobull 08-29-2003 10:06 AM

there have been a million reports of this same problem and NO answers. Microsoft has been told about the bug(s) a million times and have not even commented on it. I finally did get to the point where i just re-installed the OS, but I went from XP back to 2000.

michaelw 08-29-2003 02:06 PM

damn so therse no fix?

i say this with a word of caution.

you might want to check out microsoft.com for updates and or pathes to fix this problem.

could work, could fuck it up worse than ever.

back up your data before any downloads !!!!!!!!

Maybe some odd driver searching for some hardware that doesn't exist anymore? ..

Or a automapped network drive and your net is unplugged .. usually causes long timeouts.

the indigo 09-04-2003 01:51 AM

Buy more RAM and never shut down your computer again.

Rorschach 09-04-2003 02:26 AM

That's not a bug, it's a feature. :winkwink:

Easily solved.

defrag

michaelw 09-04-2003 11:26 PM

its a new installation of xp

it has to be a service or something thats fucking it up - not a defrag problem

michaelw 09-05-2003 02:03 AM

Hmmm... This could be caused by your broadband connection believe it or not. Something about seeking network or something if your broadband connection is jacked in. Mostly w/ DSL and never experience it w/ cable. Think if this is the prob you can seek it out in technical support forums on web because it is a big issue.

michaelw 09-08-2003 07:27 PM

dont have dsl
