Has anyone ever read 'The Celestine Prophecy' ?
The theory goes like this... the churchmen used to tell people what to believe about god and spirituality - they told the people that their purpose in life was to serve god and lsiten to the churmen etc. Then the churmen starting taking bribes etc and favouring people etc so the people all realized that this could not be true so they killed the Churchmen. Now the people's whole concept of themselves, spirituality, etc had been thrown out the window and they didn't know what to believe anymore. But most importantly they didn't know WHY they were on this planet - what the meaning of life is... so they developed the scientific method of testing things and sent their smartest minds out into the world armed with this tool. Then they said to each other, well I guess while we are waiting for them to return we should make ourselves more comfortable and 'settle in' to this world. The minds never returned because they were unable to figure everything out. We still don't know the meaning of life or our ture purpose and we are still settling in and distracting ourselves. God, I love that Howard Stern episode on E where Violent J is talking a bunch of shit to the big black guy who calls in. The guy says he'll come over to the studio and whip his ass, which of course everyone thinks is just trash talk. And the whole time VJ is running his trap, acting like the original baddass, until he realizes the guy is actually on his way to kick his ass. :1orglaugh Then he starts to backpedal. You can see he's scared by the look on his face. Too funny.
