Who do you blame for all the industry problems, if anyone?

No doubt IMHO the actions of several irresponsible companies created the dilemma we are in now where both Visa and MC have imposed strict 1% limits.

Some are out of the business very rich, can think of one that got nailed by ftc hard (crescent), and others that still hang around and do well.

Name names?

Mr.Fiction 07-10-2003 03:22 PM

I won't name names, but I have a few ideas. :)

BluMedia 07-10-2003 03:25 PM

possibly the ones charging barely nothing to signup but then having multiple cross sells and end of billing the people over 100 a month.

:2 cents:

I blame McDonalds.

Mr.Fiction 07-10-2003 03:27 PM

A good place to start is probably to think about who had or has the highest per signup payouts.

Matt 26z 07-10-2003 03:27 PM

It's funny how for so long everyone has blamed "free porn" for the surfers unwillingness to hand over their CC.

Then something like this happens, and I think it's a real wakeup call that it was certain paysites at the top setting bad examples all along that caused surfer distrust.... and now new regulations as a result of that.

As for specifics, a case could be made against many large programs. Even if they are only doing one or two shady things, it all add's up.

Mike AI 07-10-2003 03:28 PM

There is so much blame to pass around....

It would be a very long list, with many prominant "players".

Sly_RJ 07-10-2003 03:29 PM

Fuck the blame game. What's done is done. Let's correct it, move on, and start making more cash. That's why we're here.

The Truth Hurts 07-10-2003 03:29 PM

Visa & Mastercard, for handing out chargebacks like they were candy.

LiveDose 07-10-2003 04:55 PM

The sex industry will always be used as a scape goat. It could be run totally clean and we would still be taboo.

That said there are a lot of dumbasses who bring unnecessary attention to the adult online world...

stevecore 07-10-2003 05:31 PM

when you point fingers, remember that three are pointed back at yourself.

49thParallel 07-10-2003 05:39 PM

What I find funny is that over the past couple of years I have always been a very vocal advocate of ethical and fair treatment of the consumer. And what I always received back from this board was that the industry was fair...and ethical...and so on and so on.

Now, I see thread after thread saying things like "payouts will need to change due to new cc regs"...and on and on.

So, let me get this straight...nobody was ripping off anyone...but sponsors are now going to have to change the way they do business to reduce chargebacks. Hmmm...if you weren't ripping them off in the first place...why would any changes you make have an effect on chargebacks. And why would payouts have to lower.

Once again, 3 cheers for the CC industry for cleaning the scum out of this industry. And yes, a number of you are most likely reading this post right now.

nocostporn 07-10-2003 05:50 PM

I won't step on toes but they know who they are...Theres one impaticular that ALWAYS argued his business "practice" was the way it should be done...I'm sure the new regs will open his eyes and maybe shut his mouth :winkwink:

and I'm all for that new regulation BTW :2 cents:

harvey 07-10-2003 05:56 PM

chodadog 07-10-2003 06:02 PM

I blame whitey.

gothweb 07-10-2003 06:03 PM

There are three basic sources of problems with the industry...

1.) Too much free porn makes people think they have a "right" to porn, so they either only view the free stuff, or they steal the stuff they should pay for.

2.) Programs that have to scam in order to offer webmasters higher payouts have created an enviroment that rips off the surfer and encourages high chargebacks. (It also creates shaving.)

3.) Some webmasters (etc.) feel that they are already in an immoral line of work. As such, they give up on morality in general, leading to fraud, chargebacks, spamming, and a thug mentality not unlike the wild west.

NoCarrier 07-10-2003 06:05 PM
