Dog owners

I am thinking of getting one, but I am alergic to the fur. I start itching and shit. Are there any shots I can take that can prevent it?

Amputate Your Head 06-26-2003 06:30 PM

its not fur people are allergic too.
most dogs have hair anyways.

its the dander

there are a few breeds which have very little dander such as the portuguese water spaniel.

What people are allergic to is not the hair itself, but the dander. All dogs have dander but some have it to a greater degree than others. It does seem that those dogs who shed seem to have a lot more dander than non shedders...perhaps because the dead skin cells are pulled out with the hair and are then on the dog's coat.
Read an interesting article on CNN awhile back about how children who have pets are less likely to develop allergy problems later on in life.

There's some useless knowledge at its best.

Are they for sale? I'm in the market for a Pug. Would like a French Bulldog, but I'm not about to throw down $2,000 on a dog.

I have a doggy. He's cool.

GeXus 06-26-2003 11:32 PM

There are dogs that have fur that tends to not affect those who are ellegic to typical dog fur. I have a weaton terrior, and they are suppost to be good for people who are even ellergic to dogs.. they dont shed either.

Marv 06-26-2003 11:34 PM

Get an American Pit. Terrier. best breed in the world.

KCat 06-27-2003 01:42 AM

Talk to your doctor. I've seen a bunch of pills advertised lately for allergies, including pets.

Hardwood floors & an air purifier would be a big help too. Don't let the dog in the bedroom either. Keeping yourself dog-free for 7 or 8 hours a night will make a difference.

Other than that, they say just make sure you get the dog bathed frequently. If you have outdoor allergies, dogs can end up bringing a lot of that kind of stuff (pollen etc.) inside with them.

Good luck!

A lot of the Terriers have hair instead of fur. I have a Cairn Terrier and have no troubles w/ allergies.

:2 cents: thatīs the eassiest way i think

Trixie 06-27-2003 08:56 AM

Poodles also have hair instead of fur -- no allergens! Plus poodles come from teacup size to standard.

I am allergic to cats and dogs but for some reason the short-haired dogs bother me most. We have a husky and her fur is EVERYWHERE -- she spends a lot of time in our bed too (no, not in THAT capacity) -- but I have no allergic reaction to her (unless she licks my face and that gives me a rash). Phew!

I don't think washing the dog will help if you're allergic though. I spent a week with a friend who has two beautiful greyhounds -- very short hair, freshly washed . . . and I was in misery sneezing, etc.

Good luck on your dog search -- they bring much happiness (again, not in THAT capacity)!!

Sassyass 06-27-2003 09:05 AM

Standard poodles are a great dog

oh no hun......i would sell my home, all my jewelry and bankrupt myself before i would ever sell my puppies. they are one of a kind and i love them more then anything else in my life.

you can go to www.petfinder.com, that is an adoption agency and they do have pugs (baby ones) for adoption. i was surfing the site last night. funny you mention a french bulldog cause a colleague of mine wants one.

im thinking of maybe getting a rott in a year or so once these two are a bit more mature. it would be quite comical to see two pugs put, what will amount to, a 130lb dog in its place :)

before i forget, if you are going to get a pug, you have to be around it all the time. if you work a day job, then forget getting one cause these are owner dogs. they require attention in a way like no other dog!

Zoe 06-27-2003 09:41 AM

There are several brands of drugs that you can take once a day to combat allergies......

You might also consider a non-allergenic dog. There are several breeds out there.

cherrylula 06-27-2003 09:42 AM

I'm fairly allergic to dogs and cats too, and own one of each, just make sure to wash my hands after I pet them so I don't start to itch.

And I don't let them hang out on the sofa or furniture... the dog has his own blanket he gets bundled in on the foot of the bed at night, which gets washed every few days.

Yes, Shitsui is another hypoallergenic dog. There are probably others.

Fuck that, though. a dog's personality is mostly in the genes. I gotta have a lab or no dog at all. Fucking little shitsui yapping bastards can go to hell.
