Soccer--the most popular sport in the world?

Soccer--the most popular sport in the world?

Of course it is going to be biased now b/c of the UTC time...

But come on...I played it as a school kid, but once you get older come on...

Resolved: Soccer a game for school kids.

Eh? Like it or not what's to 'see'? It is the single most popular sport in the world. Doesn't mean you have to like it but that doesn't change the facts either.

Not changing facts waiting for people to dig out stats.

Living For Today 06-18-2003 03:29 AM

obviously soccer is the world game.

Sarah_Jayne 06-18-2003 03:39 AM

yes...end of story.

Perhaps you would like to suggest what you think it the most popular sport worldwide?

... you wouldn´t believe it, but "scraching the balls" is pretty popular too ... never made it into the olympics though.

ADL Colin 06-18-2003 04:43 AM

Depends on how you define "most popular". Most watched, most played, listed as "favorite" in a poll. You might get different answers for different questions and methodology.

Gutterboy 06-18-2003 04:49 AM

The most popular sporting event by spectator count is the Tour de France. Overall, soccer has got to be the most played, most watched sport in the world.

Dunno what would follow it though? Maybe cricket then cycling.

KRL 06-18-2003 04:58 AM

It's funny how it never caught on as a top sport in the US. Its a great game.

Meaningless figure and quote. Of course something that goes more or less directly past people doorsteps and covers a large chunk of a country will have a lot of spectators.

Even the methodology statement by Colin is trying so hard to make a point that really isn't there to start with as to be meaningless.

If a sport is the most played and most watched (does it really matter how people watch it? Surely the only important criteria in this context is how many eyes view it by whatever method) then by default that would make it the most popular on a global scale which is what we are talking about.

Again - you don't have to like it but that won't stop it from being the most popular sport in the world. Daft thread to start that isn't getting any better.

Living For Today 06-18-2003 05:00 AM

Cricket would definitely count up there. Considering 99% of Indians alone who make up one sixth of the world population watch cricket it would have to be second.

Sarah_Jayne 06-18-2003 05:03 AM

yeah, cricket is the only sport that even crossed my mind as competition.

What's funny is all these sports the British invented and exported to their colonies...

They now get their ass wupped at pretty much every single one.

Except perhaps Rugby.

And they win a cricket match in a blue moon.

Who kicked your ass last year? Who's number 1 in the world? Who won the six nations? Who just beat New Zealand in their own back yard? Who's got the best player in the World?

Can you explain to me why the tiny fucking country of New Zealand are so fucking good at Rugby? It's not like there's a big population there (not counting sheep).

Sometimes sport is very wierd...

Croatia (population of 4 million) got into the finals of Euro 2000. I've probably got my facts wrong there and you can correct me, but Croatia did really fucking well.

Maybe you missed the point.

The fact that there is any debate at all proves my contention. If you don't slam the door by defining "popular" and "sport" and an acceptable measure of measurement other than an advertising slogan by the FIFA, FIVB, or FIBA the flood doors will be open to people claiming that Checkers, Chess, and Bocce are the most popular sports in the world.

<IMX> 06-18-2003 05:37 AM

Card games seem popular.

But wait...are those games or sporting contests?

The 1.5 billion people in 150+ countries who watch it on TV, in addition to the 12 million who come to see it live, is a meaningless figure? hahahaha.

The most heavily spectated parts of the course.. with the exception of the final stage on the Champs Elysees.. are the mountain stages, where 10s of thousands of people camp out along the hillsides.

I'm not a big follower of Rugby, but I assume it's England?

SexySarah 06-18-2003 05:57 AM

The All Blacks beating Japan 117 - 20 (something like that) in the Rugby World Cup was painful to watch.
