JERUSALEM (CNN) -- A suicide bomber set off a blast Wednesday that killed 16 people and injured more than 60 others, eight of them seriously, Jerusalem police and medics said.

Within minutes, Israeli helicopter gunships attacked three targets in Gaza, Palestinian security sources said. Two Hamas militants -- Masoud Al-Tito and Suhel Abu Hamad -- were killed in the attacks, the sources said.

The attacks come as the cycle of violence between Israelis and Palestinians threatens to derail the U.S.-backed "road map" to peace.

The suicide bomb detonated on Bus 14 as it drove down Jaffa Road, one of the main routes into Jerusalem city center, shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET). The bomber died in the blast.

Israeli police spokesman Gil Kleiman said: "A suicide bomber on the bus blew himself or herself up. We have wounded and dead."

A fleet of 45 ambulances rushed to the scene of the terror bombing. "The damage is really huge," said Avi Zohar of Magen David, the Israeli ambulance service.

Zohar said people were injured from screws, nails -- possibly a suitcase with explosives -- and parts of the bus.

In Gaza, Israeli helicopters were seen in the air firing on targets.

Why wont they leave Palestinians alone? Because they count on OUR tax dollars to support Isreal. If we stop supporting them, they would fall off the face of the earth in 6 months, not to mention, we would have world peace. Isreal is a bad seed on earth.

Do not forget that it was a couple of years ago that Israel allowed the Palestinians to police themselves and even gave them weapons which they then turned on the Israel.
