Critique First " Rock Video "

Ok we just finished editing our first rock video. We used 14 masters with around 120 cuts. We still have a few things to do with color correction. I would like some feed back from those that are video editors or people who are fans of this type of music.

The band is called Paradise . They will be touring in Europe this summer. I will be heading over to Europe for some of the tour.

HERE IS THE VIDEO

lol - I enjoyed that!:thumbsup

I like the music, enjoyed the pyros, but there were a few times when the singer looked into the camera, it just looked kind of....odd....can't put my finger on it...also, noticed the song was a bit out of sync with the singer's mouth in a few of the closeups....

drunkdollars 05-31-2003 05:19 PM

What did you film that with?

Looks really good to me.
:thumbsup

mastamindz 05-31-2003 05:20 PM

Its like a mix between Elvis and early 80's glam group.

Sweet video though!

Yeah we still have some work to do on syncing the video and the audio.... I really appreciate the feedback. We are branching out to main stream video production. We do not just want to be know as super porn producers but also respected as a highly qualified production crew.

We don't care about the mainstream money we want the respect. Our Porn sites are very successful :)

Thanks DS.... from what I understand Michel ?Away? Langevin from the band Voivod played drums on there CD.

Hey what about trading some traffic on your Dirty Dick Suckers site with Her First Gang Bang ?

There is no storyline in this video, just members of a rock band playing their instrument. You need to spice it up with story, even if it is a thin story that has nothing to do with the song.

alm4n 05-31-2003 07:39 PM

I enjoyed the short guitar solo near the end :)

uno 05-31-2003 07:42 PM

The music was ok, the outfits were pretty horrible(except for the misfits shirt), and i agree with the one person here about some of the close-ups. Aside from that, it was pretty good. Could probably use more panning shots around the band(a la godsmack videos for ex.)

That was the first edit, We have to still edit in the shots of the car and the girl .

gothweb 05-31-2003 07:48 PM

I liked it. Enjoyed watching it all the way through, actually.

A few thoughts, though...

1.) The video looked overexposed at times. Flipping between different exposures of the same basic scene looks even worse than having a bad exposure.

2.) Some things were hard to judge given the medium. (WMV isn't exactly clear.) I would like to see more visual detail, and see if the audio synch is any good.

3.) It's all the same scene. I think for a first video, a simple performance like that is great. I would have edited in some outdoor scenes, probably with a bright blue muscle car, given the chance.

Wow, get that girl in there as soon as possible.

demented 05-31-2003 08:04 PM

Little blue hurricane?

KidCock 05-31-2003 08:10 PM

The close-ups of the lead singer's face are kind of weird, but not in a good way. He doesn't look very professional.

Some of the fades from frame to frame don't look that smooth (though could just be in windows media player)

I don't like the set for this kind of music/video, the costumes are great though.

Pyro from the guitar is cool.

Besides that only other thing I can notice was the audio/visual synching as people already told you...

Jamdin 05-31-2003 08:44 PM

I have to say that I love the song & the concept so much that I put up a link to the website on Jamdin's Dream Realm :thumbsup

I love the green guitar and the outfits. The pace of the video fits with the pace of the song: fast. I didn't mind the fact that there was no Hawaiian babe.

Great vocals (I could actually hear the words over the instruments) and great riffs. I hope Paradise goes to the top :thumbsup

When will the video of the girl be edited and uploaded?

In all seriousness. The video is not bad. Most of the suggestions I was going to make have been pointed out. Other than that, good job!

Thanks for the comments. We wanted to focus more on the band than use a big story line. Since the band is kind of retro 80's glam rock we wanted to give it that 80's rock video low budget feel. We used a Dodge Swinger with a 340 engine as the musclecar and one of my girl friends Jessica Lee Ann as the beauty. We used a steady cam for some of the shots as you can see in the pictures.

Paul Markham 05-31-2003 11:35 PM

Production wise it looked fine, except for the over exposure. Either go way over and make it look deliberate or get it right.

But is was just a rock band in a room, maybe filming it someone's garage would have given it a twist.

Thanks for the comments charly....... I repect your opinion coming from a pro photographer. I agree we may have burnt some of the image using the kino flo lighting. We also used a lot of make up to try to give the musicians that party worn image in there faces.

We where going to use a real garage but we did'nt want there to be gasoline present with the pyro tec's. We where also wanted to shoot it and have it edited for there opening European Tour.

DeanCapture 05-31-2003 11:52 PM

That was cool - really enjoyed it - you guys used a ring-light for some of that stuff?

I noticed a couple of cuts where the camera lens barn-door accidently snuck into the right side of the frame.

Good stuff though - :winkwink:

THANK YOU so much ! .............I guess you didn't take the time to read anything of the text in this thread and only looked at the video and pictures. That cheezy 80's look is exactly what we where trying to get. The band is a retro cheesy 80's rock band.

421Fill 06-01-2003 12:01 PM

I'm not a video pro, but I thought it was really good. :)

U R correct.... sorry...

So if you are trying to get the 80's rock thing.... how come all you guys have short hair? Let it grow man.... or get wigs... :2 cents:

Other than that... most excellent! I wish you all the best! :thumbsup

smack 06-01-2003 12:07 PM

not bad, i couldn't get the sound on it. you might wanna loose the elvis funeral suit though. :winkwink: nice set of ludwigs your drummer got.

asuna 06-01-2003 12:11 PM

heh, your sites are pretty cool.. but I think I should send this clip to Dollar Clip on musique plus....

:1orglaugh sorry Easton and Dugmor

damn i was gonna post that, i have this T shirt.

the editing is ok, but just get rid of the large ensemble shots they are too static compared to the rythm of the editing thats all i can say except that in my humble director's opinion i would have done something other than filming the band on a stage but this is just a personal view.

good job guys , by the way hit me up on icq if you come around paris this summer:thumbsup

Nice job,
A bit overexposed for a few frames, and the rapid in/out zoom
disrupted the flow for me but over all very nice. :thumbsup

Yeah the .WMV compression doesnt do it justice. When you look at it on a regular tv it looks alot better. Those 80's band are really big in Europe, the video is almost a shoe in for MTV Europe when it comes out.

Slim!

SABAI 06-01-2003 02:11 PM

the overxposure is not a problem it can be fixed in post production anyway

how do you say "etalonnnage" in english?

That overexposure gives it a cool look when you look at it on a regular TV, well thats my :2 cents:. But we will sit down with the editor and director of photography and see what they think. Like you said, color corrections and ajusting the overexposure isnt really difficult to do in post-prod.

rowan 06-01-2003 02:19 PM

Just adding in my bit, the video looks great, but one thing that bothers me a little: there are a couple of cuts between two angles of the lead singer where it's obvious they were from separate takes. His expression changes completely between those two shots - but it's a matter of milliseconds in the video... Maybe put something in between them?

I actually enjoyed the music too for some strange reason. :)
