Standard Internet

Up until now, I didn't think 12-clicks was worth the time of day. That is, until last week, when I decided to check out his AllClicks program at Standard Internet. Since clicking on the AllClicks Blind Link he provides to affiliates, the following has happened:

a) A popup window stays resident on my computer. Every so often, it pops up a new window.
b) Any pages that can't be found redirect me to hitpointer.com and then an additional popup window...which all strangely enough have links on the pages which are ALL directed at other Standard Internet products. Searchtraffic, their cellular phone service, and on and on.

So, chances are pretty darn good that these annoyances were spawned from the original Standard Internet AllClicks product.

I have tried to remove this scumware using various software solutions, all to no avail. So, since this won't work, I have gone the next step... I have launched an official complaint with the FTC and the FCC. It seems that they might be interested in a company, which 12-clicks himself alludes to having an incredible marketshare, hijacking the browsers of 1,000's upon 1,000's of unwary consumers. Luckily, while in the adult industry there is a certain grey area as to what is legal and what is not, the law regarding browser hijacking has been tested and this type of practice is in fact illegal.

Have you had a similar experience: file a complaint here:

www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaintfiling.html
www.ftc.gov/ftc/complaint.htm

You're not the only one..

http://www.computing.net/security/ww...orum/4713.html

Hey at least you didn't send them traffic then get accused of running a hitbot...

49thParallel 04-20-2003 10:46 AM

I just had a hardworking (it's Sunday) IT colleague test this out from his computer at his office. He was able to break this down further.

The first link goes to hitpointer.com, which then redirects to textlinks.com (another Standard Internet domain) and then finally to the page with all of the Standard Internet search links and services.

To make things more interesting, my colleague heads the IT department at our municipal government. He too is now filing a formal complaint. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would assume that a local government issuing a complaint to a Federal government department may just cause a few waves.

Again, I would recommend that if you have experienced a similar issue, submit a formal complaint to:

www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaintfiling.html
www.ftc.gov/ftc/complaint.htm

Not that i could give a crap, but you should really think about removing those links.

I'm playing devils advocate here but....
You may be pissed, and rightfully so, but asking users of GFY to report another to the federal governernernernment is slightly beyond the bounds of good forum etiqutte. Would you want someone doing the same to you?

Early DVD winner prediction.

They're prop fixing their sites now. after the heat is gone they'll be back to the old ways again. :(

now my browser is the shit.

Can't believe I am agreeing with mrPopup. I will add.... It is also a bit low to post accusations like this in the middle of a long weekend. If it was against me it wouldn't matter much, because I am around most of the time anyway, my business is home-based. But Ron is an office guy, and it is common knowledge that guys like him are usually monday to friday type guys. Usually. He may pop in here today, maybe not, but it's pretty low to pull this on a holiday.

My intent is not to give Ron a forum to defend himself... I for one do not believe that this type of practice is ethical, and a man to man talk on the forum will not make the alleged practices right.

And, he talks highly of himself and his company on this board, and is quick to call many others cheaters, without a shred of proof. This type of practice is far from the "above board" actions that I would expect from a company which so viciously attacks others.

If you really want this post to die, simply do not respond any further...and it will quickly be buried in the depths of the board, never to be seen again.

I have never once seen him or his company "viciously attack" anyone. I have seen him answer the posts of others who are viciously attacking him, but not the other way around. When he has chosen to "bite back", he seems to have some fairly irrefutable proof of what he says, as far as cheaters go.

Keep it factual at least. Where are these posts where he has initiated vicious attacks?

And there are two sides to every story, regardless of what you think. You've made a public accusation here, in the middle of a long weekend. There certainly IS room for a rebuttal, and anyone blindly going to your posted links and lodging a complaint before hearing one should be flogged like a ratfaced weasel. Everyone has a right to have a say in their defence.

No, I said if anyone else has experienced the same browser hijacking, then file a complaint. Do not "blindly" file a complaint, if you have not experienced the same.

And, in this case, as outlined in my first 2 posts, I believe that I too have "some fairly irrefutable proof ". My browser has been hijacked...all links on the hijacked pages (and at least one of the domains in the redirect chain) return directly to Standard Internet products. The ONLY blind lnk program I have visited in the last month is AllClicks by Standard Internet. The browser hijacking occured IMMEDIATELY after visiting SI's link.

I agree that perhaps I should have let the 2 complaints now lodged by myself and my colleague take due course...but I certainly do not apologize for pushing ahead with my formal complaints.

DrewKole 04-20-2003 11:40 AM

Oh no, the big bad 49th is complaining to the FTC about Ron.

I'd be shitting in my pants if I were him...

I hate nobodies that have the ability to take down large corporations because they arent intelligent enough to remove said spyware.

Why dont you ask him how to remove the spyware?

It is not my responsibility or anyone elses to have to seek out a solution to this invasion. I do not want to make peace with SI and ask them how to remove their program. I want to insure that this type of practice is not continued.

sextoyking 04-20-2003 11:51 AM

49th,

While you might be pissed off right now the more professional thing to do would of been to call / email Robert (mojo) and explain your problems / situation to him.

Mojo has been around for many years, and I have always had a good experience with him and his company.

my 2cents you know, but it's not like our industry needs anymore heat :)

The in-fighting in this industry makes you want to beat someone over the head with a two-by-plank.

Repeatedly, in some cases. :Graucho

I am curious about the same. Is there a specific law/regulation against such practice?

49thParallel 04-20-2003 12:07 PM

To test this further, I have just installed Netscape for the first time on my system. I then signed up for a new account at SI and went to the AllClicks linking code they provided.

Immediately, McAfee Virus Scan came back with a JS/Exploit virus warning. Yep, good old clean fun from the bunch at SI.

Even the complaint of a nobody should be perfectly valid if they are reporting someone for doing something unethical and illegal.

Goth,

I agree 100%, but only thought on this subject was to get with Robert and or Ron privately first. If private doesn't work, well then you have other choices.

I mean look at me, I can be an asshole, and have done so a few times over the years.

3-4 times companies have been very slow to pay us for design, I contact them many many times, when I finally reach the point where I think I might get fucked, I email them once more and say I am going public, if no pay then, I fucking burn them on the forums. I don't like doing that at all, but as I said it's only happ. 3-4 times in all these years after doing thousands of projects.

peace

todd

Is there an explanation about "hijacking" a surfers browser in the terms of agreement?

49thParallel 04-20-2003 12:55 PM

Kimmykim - Nope...read the above again carefully....

And correct me if I am wrong, but I am assuming that Standard Internet does not issue terms to each unexpecting surfer, which would need to state:

"By clicking on our link you agree that our pages will wilfully hijack the your browser and install a JS/Exploit virus on your system".

But, then again, why am I defending my position again. It is laid out quite methodically above...no punches pulled...

And the point of my post is simple..I have laid complaints, a colleague has issued a similar complaint...and if you too have fallen victim to this type of browser exploitation, the applicable links are available at the start of this thread to enable you to to let your voice be heard.
