WTF? MJ gets the 9-11 flag???

Tonight was the last game for over tired MJ.

Rumsfeld gave him a fucking flag.

What? MJ is a BASKETBALL player not a god damn national HERO or something. What next, a flag to Bonds for hitting some home runs? A flag to the guy at my local starbucks for making my coffee right for once?

"Rumsfeld, who received a loud ovation, presented Jordan with a flag that flew over the Pentagon on the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. "

How about giving it to one of our POWs or a family who lost a loved one on 9-11 or even the Iraqi that walked miles each day to help free Jessica Lynch.

What do we do? Give it to a fucking basketball player. Great. You served the country well. Jesus man.

Am I wrong?

The Truth Hurts 04-14-2003 09:14 PM

Can you name one person who's done more to inspire more people in this country, the youth in particular, in the past 20 years or so?

I can't.

Sports/fitness-wise? One name does come to mind actually... Schwarzenegger. Jordan doesn't come close to Arnie.

Titan 04-14-2003 09:20 PM

MJ is one of the most recognizable people in the world. More welll known than the President.

Oh. What has he done to insipre people? Selling shoes does not count.

You could say Bill Gates has. He has given more money to charity than Jordan could in 20 life times. Also he has become the icon for going from nothing to something.

You could say Jesse Jackson has done more 'inspiring'. Sure, he does not have a clothes and shoe line....

In fact, you could say lots of people who have actually DONE something to insire kids to be more.

Making profitable commercials and products is nothing special.

But maybe I am wrong.

Also, the Flag was a symbol of 9-11 and should be given to someone deserving as such.

Oh, How about Magic Johnson? Do you have any idea how much he has done in the past years to help black communities? Alot more than Jordan has.

So? Flags are distributed by popularity ratings???

In fact, too much importance is given to that piece of fabric....

If your national flag, or country for that matter, actually stood for something, I'm sure you'd understand the importance.

FYI, we do . It is even in our national anthem... But we do not use it for every Wal-Mart new store opening... This way, it keeps it's symbolic value.

Michael Jordan of the Washington Wizards plans to divide his 2001-2002 salary, approximately $1 million, among a number of relief charities. Jordan recently earmarked $100,000 for the Washington Sports and Entertainment Education Fund to benefit children who lost a parent or guardian in the Pentagon attack.

I think that deserves a Pentagon flag...

quiet 04-14-2003 09:56 PM

that fucking micheal jackson. when will he learn?!

notion 04-14-2003 09:57 PM

You are making a big deal over a flag that really isn't that important. Maybe, just maybe, if the flag was flown on 9-11-01; not 9-11-02. I could give two shits about that flag, and I'm sure everyone else could give a shit too.. well, except you. :thumbsup

I am not going to argue the merits of giving him a flag because I can really see both sides.....

....BUT.....

remember that he agreed to donate his salary to charity NOT out of the goodness of his heart, but because it was a condition to being the first ever OWNER and PLAYER :)

I think the U.S. is the only country that uses the "flag" as napkins.think about the 4th how many "flag napkins" you see around it's supposed to be symbolic but we use it too wipe our faces then throw away:glugglug

Mogul 04-14-2003 10:15 PM

RE: Jordan giving money "approximately $1 million"

ooooo a WHOLE million? I think Sally Jesse Rafeal gave more.

But who cares. I am just wondering why we hand out symbolic flags like candy to athletes. And we wonder why our country is all fucked up.

Give one to Sean Hannity!!

Giving one flag, to one and probably the second most recognizable athlete in history, is giving them out "like candy".

Nice distortion.
THAT is why this country is "fucked up", as you put it.
Idiots who blow minor things TOTALLY out of proportion.

Oh for fucks sake, Michael Jordan, as an athlete, embodies the American spirit. The guy doesn't just show up to play, he comes to win every time he gets on the court.

Tiger Woods is the only other athlete I can think of who deserves the same sort of recognition.

And comparing MJ to Brother Bill is perfectly appropriate, they both managed to revolutionize their fields.

Yepp. And a lot more popular too. Especially theese days :1orglaugh

whitey 04-14-2003 10:54 PM

I am sure there were quite a few flags that made it up that flag pole that day; all of them earmarked for different constituents.

kmanrox 04-14-2003 11:58 PM

they are just trying to divert some of the hostilities we have in america to something fun, trying to show that rumsfeldt isnt the war monger some people think he is, to show that they are focused on things at home as well as abroad... let's face it, he's the greatest sports legend of the last 20 years or so and will be known as one of the best, if not the best sports icon in his sport of all time (as Tiger is destined to be in golf)....

imo

that deserves nothing. the guy has more money than he'll ever need. 500k is pocket change for him

marty 04-15-2003 05:47 AM

I'm not from the US but I do have to say that there are about 20 million others who deserve that flag before MJ does.

Every single person that puts his/her life on the line for the protection of others are the front runners.

Fuck MJ. It's not like he sacraficed anything in his life for others. Everything he did was driven by money.

should be given to the city of new york because there wasn't one person who deserves it. how many people lost their lives in new york trying to rescue people on that day?
