Let's all praise cops, firefighters and EMS for working Christmas Day

Our local newspaper runs a story this morning praising "police, firefighters and paramedics" for their dedication working Christmas Day - when everyone else is at home with family and friends.

Remember folks - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS AND AMBULANCE WORKERS (you know...the ones making double time and a half on Xmas Day).

While the unsung, minimum wagers in this bleak economy who keep the lights on and the cogs turning...just doing what they do - in order to pay the exorbitant wage and benefits the cop enjoys.

But if the cops don't work on Christmas then who is going to beat and taser all the fast food workers when they get off work and drive home?

Most of them are forced to work on Christmas or other holidays because their schedule happens to have them working that day. Being off is probably worth more than time and a half to them I bet.

And you should look at your property taxes. I think it's pretty straight forward what you pay for police services in your area.

mineistaken 12-26-2015 11:15 AM

Ridiculous. They are just a small minority of people who work on holidays.

blackmonsters 12-26-2015 11:18 AM

I praise all the football players that play during the holidays so we can sit on our ass and drink beer to have fun.
They don't even get overtime either.

I always thought it would suck to play for the Cowboys or Lions (not just because they both suck.)

NRP special duty rate is $70/hr - and on stat holidays they get double time and a half of that.

I know exactly what my property taxes are - and what our police services cost. This year's budget is $133.6 million (over 90% of which is wages and benefits).

Police bring in budget with zero increase | St. Catharines Standard

Of the 703 police officers employed by Niagara Regional Police, last year there were 602 NRP officers on the annual 'Sunshine List' (police officers making $100,000 or more - not including benefits), with the top earner, Police Chief McGuire, making $297,082.03, plus $32,445.09 in taxable benefits.

As of Feb/2014 - the median cost in Niagara Region per household for policing in Niagara Region is $655 (and that was two years ago).

But this is not the main point of the OP.

Well you are Canadian so it's understandable you are upset. After all, there is no crime in Canada for fuck's sake!

Talk to cops in Detroit who work on Xmas Day. :)

What are all those cops DOING on XMas Day near you? Pissing into Niagra Falls?

baddog 12-26-2015 12:25 PM

So go to your city council meeting and start a movement that those people now get holidays off. Let's see how many of your neighbors agree with you.

You're both missing the main point and intent of the OP.

It was the glorifying by media of these cops, etc...working on Xmas Day - as if they deserve special recognition and acknowledgement for their 'sacrifices'.

I have to wonder, did you leave the house yesterday? How many businesses did you see open? How many of those employees risk their lives for you on a fairly regular basis?

johnnyloadproductions 12-26-2015 12:53 PM

Cops and all other public officials are necessary.

It does make me upset when one writes me a ticket though and is morbidly obese.

Oh...fucking...please.

Cops risking their lives for me.

That's a fucking joke.

I couldn't get a Niagara Regional Police officer to file a police report after a driver intentionally aimed his car and attempted to run me down while on the job.

"Risk their life" - what a crock of shit.

Tell him you were speeding to get to a Dunkin' Donuts because they have a two-for-one limited time offer and the cop would not only let you off but escort you there lights and siren blazing. :)

OP: I did not miss the point. I was actively rejecting it and belittling it. People who risk their lives for our safety DO deserve special recognition above and beyond the employee at the McDonald's drive thru who has to pull a Holiday shift. Sorry if your bitter ass disagrees.

EDIT: And the fact you couldn't get a local cop to take YOU seriously does not surprise me one bit. But I bet if someone was raping your wife on Christmas Day you would be calling....who? What if your house was burning down because your lame ass couldn't take the turkey out of the oven in time? A firefighter working that day rushes in and saves your myopic, cynical ass and you do what? Not say thank you?

Fuck off with this please.

So why don't you move from the mean streets of Niagara? Then why aren't you more active in your POS village if your community services aren't doing their jobs? Loser

Loser?

Nice. :)

Thanks Lloyd. Merry Xmas to you too, cunt.

Perhaps you'd like to expand on your assumptive bullshit and explain further with all your obvious insight in what ways I may or may not be active and how I do/don't serve my community. Feel free to leave out the part about the military service to my country (oops, they work on Xmas Day, too)...or the parts about being an officer of the court who has worked alongside cops for nearly a decade.

Naw, skip it.

I wouldn't want you to place burden on that braincell.

I have to wonder why you didn't want a big fat hamburger on Christmas day like I did and leave the fucking house to get one.

I see cops showing up on Christmas day after the burger flipper has been shot in the robbery.
So I have no fucking idea of how the cop's job was more dangerous than the burger flipper with a bullet in his ass.

You make a fair point. Bars on Christmas Eve are dangerous places, too.

Let's just hope everyone stays safe.

Rochard 12-26-2015 03:45 PM

I live in a town with a population of 50k people and a rather low crime rate. Our local police department has a full staff of twenty people (including detectives and dispatch), and at any given time we have all of three officers on duty. We love our police officers and our fire fighters and fully support them.

I couldn't imagine it any other way.

Tjeezers 12-26-2015 03:47 PM

cause that was my xmas dinner

See, that is what confused me; I thought I remembered you used to be a parking cop or something. I was trying to figure out what made you so bitter about public servants. Was it because you couldn't get on with the PD?

I was surprised when I was walking the dogs last night and I saw the Jack-in-the-Box was open; I don't remember that being the case back when I would have appreciated it.

Most of them do deserve special recognition. The vast majority of them do a great job and are straight hardworking people. It sounds like you may be a little jealous that you get little to no thanks for washing dishes somewhere or lacking in the attention department. To select a profession and to call them out because of recognition makes YOU look sour.

I've met a lot of Canadians and people in your region and they are all sorts of confused. Obama loving reverse racist white guilt fools. You'd bake a cake and send it to a rapist for Christmas right?

Childhood dreams flushing down the toilet due to lack of required skills usually makes pillow biters jealous of the "dominant male" role. Sitting alone in the dark, typing hateful messages from a beta male is lackluster.

We all have had our run-ins with the cops. And usually it's for doing stupid shit. Dissing public servants is just tiresome, worse than Illuminati conspiracy theories. People are getting tired of the "it's cool to hate a cop."

kane 12-26-2015 09:29 PM

While I appreciate the cops, firefighters and doctors/EMT's that work on Christmas (and other holidays) I also appreciate the guy working at Wallgreens on Christmas day so I could go buy an HDMI cable when I couldn't find one in the house and all the gas stations that are open with people working pumping gas out in the cold, miserable weather.

Ontario cops risk their lives every day when they try to fulfill their distracted driving quota. I personally wanted to murder one myself when a little Asian bastard told me I had to let him take a photo of my recent texts. He was very close to being murdered.

It's probably because they make 100k plus in Canada but we are still told to praise them like heroes even though they spend most of their time being tax collectors, and we have to hear them bitch every year about not having enough money even though their budgets are spiraling out of control.
