Our local newspaper runs a story this morning praising "police, firefighters and paramedics" for their dedication working Christmas Day - when everyone else is at home with family and friends.

Remember folks - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS AND AMBULANCE WORKERS (you know...the ones making double time and a half on Xmas Day).

While the unsung, minimum wagers in this bleak economy who keep the lights on and the cogs turning...just doing what they do - in order to pay the exorbitant wage and benefits the cop enjoys.

Most of them are forced to work on Christmas or other holidays because their schedule happens to have them working that day. Being off is probably worth more than time and a half to them I bet.

And you should look at your property taxes. I think it's pretty straight forward what you pay for police services in your area.

Ridiculous. They are just a small minority of people who work on holidays.

I praise all the football players that play during the holidays so we can sit on our ass and drink beer to have fun.

As of Feb/2014 - the median cost in Niagara Region per household for policing in Niagara Region is $655 (and that was two years ago).

It was the glorifying by media of these cops, etc...working on Xmas Day - as if they deserve special recognition and acknowledgement for their 'sacrifices'.

I have to wonder, did you leave the house yesterday? How many businesses did you see open? How many of those employees risk their lives for you on a fairly regular basis?

Cops and all other public officials are necessary.

I live in a town with a population of 50k people and a rather low crime rate. Our local police department has a full staff of twenty people (including detectives and dispatch), and at any given time we have all of three officers on duty. We love our police officers and our fire fighters and fully support them.

I couldn't imagine it any other way.

Most of them do deserve special recognition. The vast majority of them do a great job and are straight hardworking people. It sounds like you may be a little jealous that you get little to no thanks for washing dishes somewhere or lacking in the attention department. To select a profession and to call them out because of recognition makes YOU look sour.

We all have had our run-ins with the cops. And usually it's for doing stupid shit. Dissing public servants is just tiresome, worse than Illuminati conspiracy theories. People are getting tired of the "it's cool to hate a cop."

While I appreciate the cops, firefighters and doctors/EMT's that work on Christmas (and other holidays) I also appreciate the guy working at Wallgreens on Christmas day so I could go buy an HDMI cable when I couldn't find one in the house and all the gas stations that are open with people working pumping gas out in the cold, miserable weather.

Ontario cops risk their lives every day when they try to fulfill their distracted driving quota. I personally wanted to murder one myself when a little Asian bastard told me I had to let him take a photo of my recent texts. He was very close to being murdered.

It's probably because they make 100k plus in Canada but we are still told to praise them like heroes even though they spend most of their time being tax collectors, and we have to hear them bitch every year about not having enough money even though their budgets are spiraling out of control.
