The images I posted above are from Auchan a hypermarket chain where we buy the products for a week. When we go for a daily shopping we go to Billa - there are two of them in 2 minutes of walking from my home. And yes we really have much better lighting there than in one shown at your picture (it looks sad and gloomy).

And that's only one of them. The one I'm used to buy food at. There are many others in other cities. I came here from a very distant Siberian city. It's located much far away from here than a size of the whole England in a 2 hour shifted time zone. I still have friends there and visiting them from time to time. So there is something that tells me that I know better than you about Russia far away from the place where I live now...

Billa sucks donkey balls in comparison to most American ones. We have them here in Prague and they look identical to your pictures. I keep hoping that an american grocery store will make the jump over to mainland Europe.

If there's a definitive way to light a grocery store, the company that runs the stores in the photos I posted above have figured out exactly what that is. They have the grocery selling business down to a science. It is generally accepted by the rest of the industry and the rest of the companies do their best to play catch up.

I pay about 30 rubles (less than half of a dollar and it's the higher price in Russia) for a cubic meter of clean water. I'm using that water for washing only because I prefer to drink the bottled one. Now tell me how much do you pay for water?

Some pics from your post look lighten enough, some - not. But I can't tell it for sure by looking at the pictures only. A level of light in the grocery stores here must be about 700-1000 Lux according to the standards. The lighting can be easily measured with a simple device like this:
