Ariel Sharon has told his cabinet that he plans to extend the "security fence" Israel is building along the length of the West Bank so that it entirely encircles any Palestinian state.
The revelation, which follows the Israeli government's decision to oppose full independence for Palestine in favour of a state with "certain attributes of sovereignty", immediately drew fire from the Palestinians who accused the Israeli prime minister of trying to turn the occupied territories into a huge prison.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army killed 10 Palestinians, including a four-year-old girl, in a raid on a Gaza refugee camp yesterday.

Hanan Ansar and two teenagers were among those killed as tanks and helicopters led an assault on Nusseirat camp in search of wanted Palestinians and to destroy the homes of "terrorists".

Mr Sharon dropped what is being called a political bombshell on Sunday while taking his cabinet on a secret tour of the fence, which is a six-metre (20ft) wall topped with barbed wire and lined with guard towers in many places.

The 230-mile wall and fence already under construction will extend the length of the West Bank, creeping deep inside Palestinian territory for long stretches. It will almost surround at least one, and probably two, cities.

You have to put things in a context that people understand. One shouldn't have to resort to the hypothetical. It should be apparent why there is nothing wrong with Israel erecting a wall for security. They Wall in Germany was not erected to guard against terrorism. It was to guard against the influence of the West. Why Israel can't take measures to defend herself is beyond me.

You build a wall where the danger is. Most of the suicide bombers have come from the occupied territories. Sure infiltrators have come from Lebanon, but there already are fences there.

- Different flags
- different passports
- different currency
- different parlement

- same language

I hate to get involved in these political debates, but I can't resist. What we're talking about is Israel's right to defend itself from a foreign nation that it currently occupies, one without any army, whose people are being killed by Israeli soldiers and have been for years on a daily basis.

I don't support terrorism of any sort. Including the kind that comes by way of bombs from above, blackhawk helicopters, bulldozers, or the like.

The Israeli wall is to keep Palestinians out. The Berlin wall was to keep East Germans in.

North / South Korea - Give it a few years. If it wasn't for the North's cult of personality (Dear Leader and Great Leader) the two countries would reunify.

North / South Vietnam - Uh, they don't exist any more. Just one country, Vietnam.

UK / Ireland - The only example that's at all similar to Isreal/Occupied territories. Here again a wall is a good idea. It keeps the Oranges and the Greens seperate.

You also forgot about China / Taiwan. One country two governments.

One wall is being erected to keep people strapped with bombs from running in and blowing up buses.

The other wall was erected to keep it's own citizens in so they couldn't leave the country because it wasn't allowed.

The point was just that A wall is not OK in Berlin ( and it was about 8-10 feet high ) but OK around Palestine ( 20 feet high).
