Trump on McCain: I like people that weren't captured

and that's the end of the Trump campaign.

TheSquealer 07-18-2015 02:36 PM

He could have said "I like people who didn't destroy their own aircraft carrier" as well. Maybe he's warming up to that.

TheSquealer 07-18-2015 02:37 PM

Bush Sr said it in a good way when being told he was a hero after being shot down as a pilot "the heroes were the ones who didn't get shot down"

i get the gist of what they are both saying, Bush sr and Trump, but i can also understand the need to make some captured soldiers heroes. they are fighting on behalf of their country and end up being tortured, etc. either way though, it was an egregious gaffe on Trump's part that i figure will wrap up his campaign.

Trump is a joke - He has a few billion - So what - That was impressive when a few billion was worth something...

Extremely foolish statement to make.

What branch of the military did Trump serve his country in? (rhetorical question)

Yep...could be a campaign ender.

TheSquealer 07-18-2015 03:08 PM

Obama got elected by chanting hope and change and by being the exact opposite of Bush. Trump is making waves because he's the exact opposite of a politician. He won't go away just because he says stupid things. People have never had less faith in government than now. Being the opposite of a politician is going to get attention and votes no matter what.

i think it's more complex than that. he certainly hits a chord on several things that many Americans seem agree with, else he wouldn't be leading the polls in the way he is. and while insulting (some) mexicans can slide by, insulting (some) US war veterans will not slip through at all.

i'm thinking his comment will impact the polls enough to bump him out of the debates. he was in ~8th place out of 10 a couple days ago, i can see how this sort of comment could negatively impact his placing by a couple spots.

Bladewire 07-18-2015 03:20 PM

I sense a 5th bankruptcy in the near future for Trump. All the money he lost with the immigrant comments will be nothing compared to what this is going to do. ☀💥🔚

On Sunday, Graham said on CNN, ?I think [Trump]?s a wrecking ball for the future of the Republican Party with the Hispanic community, and we need to push back.? He added that Republicans ?need to reject this demagoguery. If we don?t, we will lose, and we will deserve to lose.?

My problem with McCain and his "hero status", is he's never gonna let you forget it, meanwhile the guy is one of the biggest war mongers in our govt. every fucking war that is going on, he thinks we need to be involved..

I honestly don't get it with him.. Most people whom went through what he went through tend to very against sending our troops into battle.. Meanwhile McCain doesn't seem to give it a second thought..

As far as Trump.. It's pretty fucking arrogant of him to say shit, when he dodged the draft.. Either he is really fucking stupid, or this is his big exit event so he can bow out of the election, which I'm betting will happen..

Bladewire 07-18-2015 05:46 PM

I've never connected with McCain. Like Cockett says , he'll never let you forget he was a POW. He wants us to lick his ass for getting caught & tortured "fighting for America" while campaigning against equality & a womans right to choose. Creeps me out. He honestly seems like a bitter, lazy, power hungry queen.

RandyRandy 07-18-2015 05:51 PM

Anyone who dodged the draft after WW2 was on the right side of the war.

I can't say I disagree, but if one did so, they shouldn't bad mouth those whom took their spot. Vietnam was obviously a war we shouldn't of been involved with, but if you did dodge the draft, you should bad mouth those whom didn't.

I think presidents and candidates whom flew military aircraft have one thing in common.. They seem to like to destroy jets.. bush sr I think was shot down and Bush jr crashed a few as well while on non combat duty.

I don't feel like looking it up, but f I'm not mistaken didn't McCain start off a massive fire or something when he fired a rocket or some shit with the plane sitting on the deck?

I know it was something g to that effect..

After reading what Trump said, I think he was more talking about the term "Hero" being assigned to someone just for being captured. Were the 5 Marines killed in Tenn. "heroes" just because they were killed while wearing a uniform? I don't think so, even though that's what they are being called in the press.

Trump has spoken without a filter for far too long to be able to successfully run for President.

directfiesta 07-18-2015 06:19 PM

well, he is sorta right ... after all, McCain got shot down very early and was nicknamed SongBird ....

Yes, I can unterstand what he's saying, but even still anyone with common sense should know not to touch that subject, specially as someone running to be the commander in chief of the military forces. If nothing else it shows severe lack of respect to the military and lack of common sense.

I have a hard time thinking trump is this dumb, so I think it's his exit strategy..

i tend to agree the jab was pretty fucking funny and very gfy. but a presidential candidate can't insult veterans without serious consequences.

but my guess is based on figuring he won't make the cut to debate.

again, i'm just guessing for fun, because who the fuck knows, and i also don't understand all i know about the process FOX is using in culling the candidates down to the top 10. it's my understanding they are averaging 5 polls and i've read that puts him in 8th spot, but the only poll i ever hear about has him in first place.

I'd almost bet that military guys think McCain isn't a hero as well. They probably feel more disrespected by EVERYONE in the military being constantly referred to in the media as a "hero".

If everyone is a hero...then nobody is a hero. A "hero" used to be that guy who saved his entire platoon by singlehandedly fighting off overwhelming odds.

And didn't McCain talk shit about Trump first?

That seems to be the way the Republicans and the media have this worked out with each other.
A Republican (or Democrat) says something shitty about Trump. When Trump fires back...they then make it the headline that Trump is "attacking" another "leader" in our country.

Funny to watch CNN and MSNBC all aghast at Trump for returning an insult to McCain when they were so happy to insult him and drag him down themselves when he ran for President against Obama in 2008.

What a bunch of hypocrites.
People can't really be this dumb to not see through this shit right?

I know the question is rhetorical, but - oh yes they can be!

dyna mo 07-18-2015 06:40 PM

Robbie, there are plenty of ways to insult mccain without it being about what or who a hero is.

Robbie 07-18-2015 06:43 PM

Just watched the video...Trump is right.

The ONLY reason McCain is a "hero" is because he was captured. End of story.

I feel SORRY for McCain. But that didn't make him any kind of hero at all.
Trump is talking about winners in life. McCain was a loser in his military career for sure.
But people will react emotionally instead of using their fucking brains. That's the problem with our culture these days.

dyna mo 07-18-2015 06:46 PM

Robbie, it sounds like you're more emotional about it all than me.

I wasn't crying or angry or anything. :)

I'm just sick of watching our people being led like lambs to the freakin' slaughter by politicians and media.
It would be funny to me, if it didn't directly impact my life and my ability to make money. I need the ECONOMY to kick ass.

I don't give a fuck about Hillary's emails, I don't give a fuck if Trump says McCain isn't a "hero", I don't give a fuck about any of it.
I want to know if any of these idiots can get us disengaged from all this warmongering and invasions and focus on getting jobs back to America so we can all prosper. :)

SilentKnight 07-18-2015 06:53 PM

While I don't agree the hero tag should be applied to McCain simply because he was shot down and held prisoner.

But I don't agree Trump (of all people...being a draft dodger) has any right to disrespect McCain with the comment he made.

Sure, I understand the one-upmanship of the sparring between the candidates...it goes on ad nauseum. But Trump crossed a line with this one IMO. He didn't just insult McCain, it was derrogatory to many who serve their country.

i was under the impression you were characterizing my view on hero status as emotionally driven by media.

all pows don't get heros status though. terms and conditions, etc. not saying mccain is worthy of hero status either. and i don't need to tell you the race for the presidency is nothing more than a popularity contest. we both know that. this thread was just my guessing Trump just shot his popularity in the foot.

RandyRandy 07-18-2015 07:20 PM

If you look at "Hippies", they wanted three things: no war (dodge the draft), smoke weed and free love.

Well, there is no more draft, pot is legal in a lot of places and there's free love for all (Gay rights, etc.)

To me, calling someone post WW2 a "draft dodger" is saying they were ahead of their time.

No, I wasn't directing anything at you personally.

I just know how our society slowly evolves with definitions and interpretations.

In WW2 if someone had told a soldier on the front line that another soldier who never did anything special had gotten captured and was now a "hero"...he probably would have punched that person out for disrespecting the real heroes of battle.

When I was a kid in the 1960's a "hero" was that guy that led the charge up the hill.

Now? The media and the Federal Govt. have worked hard since the end of the Vietnam War to try and convince every snot-nosed teenager that they will be a "hero" simply by signing up for the military.

They do the same shit with cops too. EVERY cop is a "hero". Every soldier is a "hero".

Sounds damn good! Where do I sign up?

That's the whole strategy. The draft was ended. Now we need to find a way to keep the money flowing for the giant military budget. We need plenty of "heroes" and of course lots and lots of scary villains to fight.

That's what I was talking about. My apologies if you took it as directed towards you.

no worries, amigo. i know you didn't mean it personal, i just wanted to clarify i didn't think my view was emotionally charged.

louis zamperini was a ww2 pow in japan, he achieved tons of awards and hero status and more for simply surviving a mechanical failure that led to his bomber ditching in the ocean that led to his capture.

Atticus 07-18-2015 08:14 PM

I don't think it will end Trump's campaign. I think it will energize it even more.

I personally don't agree with the majority of his opinions but I see the appeal. After years of PC bullshit and politicians saying whatever they think the voter wants to hear one day to the next, Trump comes along and doesn't care who he offends. He just says what he believes. It's actually refreshing and the country would be in a lot better shape if all politicians did the same. At least that way we would know who we're getting.

With that being said a Trump presidency would be a disaster. :helpme
