Social Icons on a website

Do you think it is a good idea to have social icons on a website if no one is using your social media accounts?

I know of a site (no names named) that only has 5 followers on pinterest, 117 on twitter, 30 on instagram etc but has linked to these accounts in the footer of their site.

I think, and often consult this information, that if you have so few followers on something it is actually damaging to your brand to link to it, because it makes it look like no one is at all interested in you.

It would be better to wait until you have at least more followers than the fake accounts mocking you before you start promoting your social media.

What do you think?

Barry-xlovecam 10-20-2014 12:20 PM

I think social media icons on porn sites are of limited value -- what are you going to post: Thanks for the good fap! :1orglaugh

Do you have a few examples to prove me wrong?

For mainstream websites, affiliate websites or adult industry ''service (B2B)" websites it makes sense.

As for sparse comment or content social media sites, that is a good question, but you have to start somewhere I guess. Some good shilling (ghosting) is being missed ;)

nm_ 10-20-2014 01:09 PM

Does it help brand credibility/trust? Probably not.

But I do agree with the sentiment that you have to start somewhere :P.

Could also be an SEO play though (ie trying to rank those accounts quickly for all brand terms to build more targeted followers over the long term)

We would wonder why only these small amounts are following on the social accounts :2 cents:

We have no followers, but make use of recommend and share buttons. That works for us.

I do this too and the first page I checked after putting "sex toys" into facebook has 7610 likes: https://www.facebook.com/cherrylusttoys

...sure others have way huge numbers.

I agree. Unless you're already well established on your social media accounts, linking to them is essentially a traffic leak.

420 10-20-2014 05:26 PM

Social media is supposed to drive traffic to your site not vice versa. Most people aren't going to like or follow you on their real account because their friends and family would see.

I would only link to it if I wanted to prove authority. 5 followers on pinterest, 117 on twitter, 30 on instagram would prove your site is unpopular.

TeenCat 10-20-2014 05:42 PM

the social buttons are looking good on sites, and people know them, so i am using them, just for design and user friendly purposes :)

I will try putting the buttons without links.

Just put them on your own sites and post back your results.

Ever heard of fiverr btw? Great way to pay $5 and get a shit ton of social media likage...

Hi Damian, wonderful to hear from you as always!

The idea behind the social sites is the same as it was when I responded about this in May here: https://gfy.com/showpost.php?p=20078527&postcount=11

We aren't trying to flood the board with non-industry participants. There is no value in having thousands of surfers 'like' or 'follow' our GFY social media accounts. While you may believe that this is indicative of failure, we see first hand the positive impact utilizing social media has had on the board. We would prefer to have a handful of interested industry participants than a million useless surfer followers. Quality, not quantity.

I do find it a bit amusing that it interests you so much though.

It says on fb that 10 people paid £10 to see his performance. That's £100 and he only had to split it with one guy. If we assume he sold all 40 tickets then he made nearly half of £400. What's that like $325 - not bad for playing with a bunny puppet and making stupid faces.

Yep. I always start my accounts by buying a few thousand followers from Fiverr. Remember, no one wants to be the first. But if you already have quite a few followers, it lends social proof to your account. If so many already follow you, then the sheep follow the flock.

Oh and Damian, since you are such a marketing genius, how about running us through one success you have had online?

Captain Kawaii 10-21-2014 01:34 AM

Organic development is best. Buying followers can often buy you trouble from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Russia and deadbeat trolls...

Make your social media accounts as interesting as you can. Actually log in and interact with people instead of just spamming links. It works to engage the community you are working with. :2 cents:

I respect Damian Jennings tenacious efforts to come off like an asshat by attacking people sideways, creating controversy where there is none and for going outdoors without a chin.

Didn't suggest there was, I'd recommend having B2B followers on a B2B board.

How many people were in Amsterdam? You know, those guys. The people in the industry. Getting them to follow you would be where I'd start. The people here, get them too.

But you need to make something interesting to get them to follow you.

I am not suggesting you get porn surfers, but B2B users. Having the tiny amount that you have, and advertising that fact, makes it seem you're irrelevant to the industry and don't get social media.

I would sincerely like to take this time and figure out what in the world you are asking.

Any exposure is good exposure from my experience. You can easily manipulate all social media stats to make your site(s) look popular in each respective media. So the answer is of course add them.

But my second question is... why are you obsessed with myjah and specifically her role with gfy? That really is the underlying question I have to your rhetoric and non sense.

"language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content."

I was the other guy you flid.

So 10 quid a ticket. 60 seats a night. Two nights. Just shy of $2k. Minus $150 room hire.

For two hours work doing my hobby.

When was the last time you were paid for wanking?

Been booked to lecture and perform the act at the famous international magic convention in London in November.

Thanks for your interest though

And awful maths

That's not what it says on facebook. "Only 40 tickets available for each performance, so get booking!"

It says 10 people went out of 56 that were invited to see Damian Jennings and Tony Sagittarius. It would be proper stupid if you were headlining yourself.

$5 turns into 500K at a turn of the hand. He is a wizard at making mad cash... what I don't understand is why myjah does not hire him immediately to help the gfy campaign?

That's called MARKETING. You make it look like there is less space to establish demand. Top stalking though. Look at the video, look like 10 people to you? If so, you are worse at maths than you are at stalking.

It's so cute you try. Really.

Here's me as the opening act.

and here's me as tony sag headlining

It was a *one man show*. Bless you though.

You're cute. I mean, I know you're just pissed I earned more money dicking about with a deck of cards for an hour for two nights that you made in the last month, so I get why you've got such a little angry twig of a hard on for me, but try THINKING before you post. Look in the audience. Count the people. Listen the the laughter and applause. When was the last time you did anything, ANYTHING that made people that happy?

:)

Yes, look at the video Gary. 60 people, two nights. I made more in two hours work than you make in a week of you whoring out your wife for bareback sex at £50 a punt. Sucks to be you.

Calling me a liar is funny though, seeing as you are lying about being your wife. Zounds, the irony.

Yeah, it was. So good I've been invited to perform at the famous International Magic Convention in london next month, been booked for a lecture tour round Ireland and am meeting next week with a TV production company.

And this is just for my HOBBY.

You stick to whoring out your wife, make the money before she's too old to support you.
