Russian soldier posts selfies from within Ukraine

There are giant rye fields between Ukraine and Russia, fields that go across the border, where nothing indicates what country they belong to :2 cents:

His phone knew exactly where he was. Smart enough to take a selfie but not smart enough to check location or turn off geo-posting?

He's either an idiot or an idiot. Comes out the same either way.

By the way, if this were any other country in the world, there would be absolute hell to pay on both sides if this "mistake" was a simple mistake as you say. Russia is playing loose and sloppy? :-)

I would like to have some pic about it. I haven't never been in Russia, but I have seen it's border many times and there have always been a real border. By real border I mean that the border is clearly marked on the landscape.

Soviet Union did even build the famous wall, you know? You din't just get through, there were wall, fences, mines, dogs, guards, machine guns, and even more that same stuff.

Yeah, he's probably not a BUK operator, but it does not really matter much as he worked on a notebook and listened to music in Ukraine - that's what matter.

And yes, Ukraine/Russia border is more or less open and non-existant. Still enyone (especially army) knows exactly where it is.

I suppose this is border? At least here it is marked?

Okay, based on google map, there is not much border on many part, but the border follows shomewhat the landscape.

Not everywhere. There are some demarkated areas, in some places demarkation started just a few weeks ago, in another there's still a common field with free pass. Lots of small non-paved roads without any marking and without border guard points too.

Yeah, he's in vehicle. He's in army after all :upsidedow

By looking at hist tags (#exercises2014) he is on some military maneuvers, or he things so.

so... he is in a military vehicle and apparently posting selfies that were geo tagged to be inside of Ukraine... what legit "military maneuvers" could a Russian solider be doing inside of Ukraine?

You obviously have not read the updated Russian military handbook. Listening to Spotify is now a requirement. Idiot!

Rochard 07-31-2014 09:05 AM

This comes as no big surprise being as we already know that Russians are in Ukraine. Isn't the leader of the rebel movement himself Russian?

Sorry but a geotag in Instagram picture doesn't prove anything. A satellite picture is the proof, but this is not. I believe that the US satellites are spying over that area 24/7, so if they got some real facts, they would publish them already :2 cents:

Why not? Do you get to avoid military service in Russia by taking a couple of tattoos?

I haven't been in Russian army, but in another one I have been, and in the field we had more important duties than to shave all the time, and we weren't in any kind of war. In fact we didn't shave at field at all.

OK, I am glad that I don't have any plans to join Russian army.

Although:

P.S. What country GPS belongs to? Looks like you have a short memory, man. During the so-called 5-day war in Georgia, your government has played with GPS in that area real hard. Even Google has disabled its maps service for whole Georgia. Don't you remember that? Don't be so naive. Please :)

No older than 27 years old? You got to have the youngest generals in the world? :)

Regular or irregular, or whatever, if they are Russians. Also you guys have conscription army and your generals can call to arms pretty much anyone they want. Although war is young mans game and younger folk are in priority when assembling forces, especially regular soldiers, leaders are a bit different matter.

"As of 2008, some 480,000 young men are brought into the Army via conscription in two call-ups each year. The term of service is 12 months. Eligible age is 18 to 27 years old."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Armed_Forces

You mix up the initial military service with duties, those don't end when you are 27 years old.

Yes sir. A man older than 27 y/o can not be recruited as a soldier in Russia (course if there is no war and national mobilisation).

You are wrong, because it's a very big difference. Russian government does not control the mercenaries and is not responsible for them. As we all know, there are about 300 US citizens from Greystone fighting on the Ukrainian territory. Should we blame Obama for that? I don't think so.

If you get recruited at 27 (which is also almost a nonsense), you'll be back home at 28. This is a simple math: 27+1=28 :winkwink:

P.S. But once again. The guys at your pics look older than 28, and 99.9% of Russian soldiers get recruited at 18-20 y/o.
