who's shooting in 4k?
 

I brought this up a few months ago, looking for shooters who were on to 4k, there was not a lot of reaction which surprised me cause so many producers seem to hang around here. It seemed that most were just not ready to move on, weren't willing to invest in the equipment, or were assuming something better would come along soon making 4k a waste of time.

So, it's been a few months, I am still interested in shooting high end 4k content, just checking to see if some of you guys are also ready. If you are, please respond, tell me how it's going, if you like it and if in your opinion it is worth it. Last thing i want is someone who doesn't believe in 4k, shooting our 4k content.

Hey Phil, I've had the pleasure of working with a new Sony PXW-Z100 video camera for 4K video on a commercial recently. The footage looks pretty amazing on a hi-res monitor- almost looks like one is looking through a window at a real world image rather than at a video. Of course the file sizes are gigantic and there are some other finicky elements to post-production.

It will be interesting to see if 4k catches on in mainstream and if it will push forward the adoption of 4k more broadly. Its been a little while since I did something with you guys and would love a cool new project. Hit me up, let's chat!

We shoot 4k. Can shoot on Red Epic or Sony. I am buying a couple Panasonic 4k cameras as well.

In answer to your questions about 4k. Everyone will be using it soon enough. All quality porn will be shot in 4k. There is no question. UHD will be the standard browser size in a couple years. all flat screens with shift to 4k resolution (actually UHD) All the TV makers will stop making 1080p sets. I have talked to Sony, Panasonic, etc. It is inevitable and happening sooner than the average guy on here thinks (as usual) :)

I know of several producers and/or websites that are shooting 4k or are experimenting with it. It'll take off in the next year or so, IMHO.

I have no interest at all in shooting 4K for adult. It's all I can do to make some
of these models look good in "HD". It's way too much definition for some girls :Oh crap

just use the right lights in the right place and you'll be fine... you'll need a body that will allow you to shoot at F5.6 :2 cents:

Agreed, it's not a turn on to see every pimple, stretch mark and other imperfection.

I have shot on the RED Scarlet, Sony Fs700, Sony F5 and Sony PXW-Z100.


All of the good cameras are interchangeable lenses and are manual focus except for the PXW-Z100(Which I think the quality isn't as good as all of the other high end cameras on the market) and require a good knowledge of basic photography.

4K files are massive! You can do so many things with good 4K files in post that you cannot do with a lot of the 1080 files. 4K is the best way to future proof your content.


The down side is when it comes down to editing. Doing color passes, edits, tweaks, rendering, etc is a serious time killer. You need serious CPU power to work with these files.



One other issue I see right now is that the 4K camera quality is going to jump massively within the next year. Buying one today, isn't a great thing right now unless you have a steady deal to shoot 4K. Cameras are dropping in price, and newer better cameras are coming out.


I can get my hands on just about anything within 3 hours if there was a good shoot with a fair budget.

How many lenses resolve at 4k?

How many human eyes resolve at 4k and at what distance? If the viewer has to be in a cinema to see any difference will this really catch on?

At the moment both cinema and TV are producing high quality content at 2k. And yet most are watching in formats that good quality DVD SD would be fine.

Other much more important factors regarding picture quality are ignored as this does not involve selling and requires learning.

Diffuse or focused light, subject and lighting contrast, good exposure, no flare or light scatter, lenses, f stop, focus, DOF ....

A good film crew will producer far better quality on 2k than an amateur with a 4k.

Producer higher quality images at no extra expense - read books.

We shoot 4k since late 2012 , while our work is mainly for IPTV channels we do plan to open our own 4k site till the end of the year.

The only difficulty we find when working with 4k is Editing it takes...lets say time.

I'm pretty sure there are some professionals in our industry, pretty insulting to say their isn't honestly. Have you looked at some of the 4k vids out there? My eyes notice the difference, i'm sure i'm not the only one.. If you recall HD sold FAR before its capabilities were utilized both with capturing and with file sizes, how is this different?

I've been shooting everything in 4K for about a year now. RED, BMPC, Canon, Sony... 128gb cards, 8TB hard drives, tons of lighting equipment :mad::mad::mad: Oh yeah, forgot about the 4k monitor, and graphic cards you have to buy so you can edit your footage in realtime. 2 hours per card to upload footage, about 4-8 hours to back up your work onto other hard drives. Start investing in good hard drives... Lots of them. :2 cents: Party's over for the run and gunners.

I just pre-ordered the Panasonic GH4 and built a new monster editing platform to handle it. Shooting in 4k gives you more pixels and 4 times the bitrate giving you more latitude in post and captures more details. This is overkill for most internet clients however the company I am shooting for is more than just an internet company and is thinking about the future of broadcasting. Although it is currently pretty much useless to most people for porn in 10-15 years from now 4k will be what HD was 10 years ago. My camera was suppose to ship a couple of weeks ago but I am still waiting on Panasonic I hope to have it this month and shoot some tests like this against my 5D Mark III

Why shoot in 4k if you are going to make it all misty, fuzzy, dreamy, soft focus, x-art style, which seems to be all the rage now days? What is the point of super sharp and then, as Dean Capture suggests, having to shoot through half a dozen filters to get the "soft" look? I never understood the soft look anyhow, I like seeing all those tiny folds of the labia in crystal clear sharp reality.

I'm not a producer, but from a marketing perspective we tend to maintain a balance between high quality yet keeping the fantasy aspect as well. It's a fine line, more so now that the quality has improved so much, but there definitely is a large market for the smoke and mirrors look still. Not to say there wouldn't be a market for the vivid realism as well, the amateur or now 'exgf' has a good sized market that isn't going anywhere either.

Not me yet...but if I get the new Samsung Galaxy S5 phone...I might throw my Canon 5d MK III in the garbage and start shooting 4k with my phone. lol

All our footage it razor sharp. We don't use ANY filters ever. We use minimal depth of field. :) Just because Dean would use filters doesn't mean it has to be done. I don't and won't. Great makeup is ALL you need. Our style is one that benefits the most from 4k :2 cents:

I love that style of content, as someone who's been staring at prolapses and creampies for years, the soft sensual shit these days is awesome.

Regardless of what others say about softening up 4k, I think it looks tighter than softened up 1080. I just wouldn't shoot it myself, cause so many others are doing it well already.
