I am back from the wilderness

...had to take one of my dogs to the vet. He ripped a nail/toe and needed stitches. I will probably be in for a week or so.

How about we go with him when he returns? Month or two in the wilderness.

I on the other hand am now OUT in the wild. In fact the ice just today broke apart on the lake. It was a glorious site.

Fishing won't be far off now.

There is a creek within walking distance in my A0 where I can catch an occasional trout.

Is it clean enough to drink or do you still have to filter it?

I've always wanted to visit someplace so clean I could drink right from the stream. Going trekking in Nepal soon, perhaps in the Himalayas I'll be able to do that for the first time.

PornDude 05-14-2014 10:13 AM

Coming back every 3 months. What's the point? :)

I spend a decent amount of time in the mountains, so a word of warning. Even in the purest of pure alpine snowmelt springs in a high mountain vale you can get beaver fever aka giardiasis, because some small animal pooped or died in a crevice somewhere which trickled down to your spring. It's *unlikely* in some settings and you might happily suck down that fresh H2O for a while..... but after the first time you wind up projectile vomiting and shitting in the wilderness for 3-4 days straight and then struggling with digestive problems for months and sometimes years after, you'll decline to take the risk from there out. Purifiers FTW in most cases.

I don't know...I don't drink it. There is a small spring within my encampment from which I had the water tested and it provides me with drinking water without having to purify it.

Ahhh...but I have...and promised myself never to do so again.

theking 05-15-2014 04:10 PM

Further more I have posted pics of PF as well as myself and a couple of military documents...and I regret doing so...as I and the pics were just flamed...and a few ignorant souls still call me Pathfinder.

Nym lake is. It's at the top of the water table for a massive region of NW Ontario, you can absolutely drink the water right from the lake. No other water source drains into the lake, only out. It's one of N America's only pristine lakes left.

The meat out of the fish in this lake is snow white, and the tastiest on the planet I tell you. Zero impurities.

And the lake home I'm staying at right now on this lake just happens to be for sale.

was that one of the lakes they did all the radiation experiments in?

http://www.torontosun.com/2013/05/10...ictable-result

don't really have time to track down which lakes, but it's in the "NW Ontario"..

Yeah well..... it's still a big lake - plenty of places for an animal to poop in it, or for rotting things, whatever. Also people do live in the area. Sure, it's cleaner than most, but if you happen to have bad luck with any particular mouthful, very unfortunate things will happen. Our civilized guts just aren't conditioned for those microorganisms anymore. You can get giardia from mice, beavers, deer, etc, ain't just people.

I'd far far rather drink from a high-altitude snowmelt fed spring rather than a lake like that with so much surface area and shoreline, there's just too much access for something to contaminate it.
