How buying an $80,000 Telsa costs the same as a $50,000 Camaro

ARRRGHHHH

I ordered a 2SS/RS/1LE Camaro 6 weeks ago for $50k and am expecting to get it in about 4 weeks or so. Today my phone rang and it was a sales rep from Tesla Motors. Get this:

Financing a Camaro for 76 months will cost about $780.00 per month taxes in, plus about 2-3 fill ups per month for $293.81 per month. Total gas per year at the current prices will cost me $3525.68. total : $1073.81.

An $80k + 15% HST Tesla Model S - $8,000 green tax credit from the Quebec Government. With 3 3.99% financing (A little high but ok) will cost me $1079.81 per month taxes included.

Frustrating! For the same price I can race and beat almost anyone on the road without polluting at all.

Oh well - this will be my last gas car. Next car is a Tesla for sure. Woo!

2MuchMark 04-11-2013 11:04 PM

How fucking sick is this

Just incredible. I WANT!

d-null 04-11-2013 11:19 PM

but wouldn't the electricity costs be comparable to the gas you included on the other?

JFK 04-11-2013 11:48 PM

just buy the Tesla :2 cents::thumbsup

With gas you may get around 15-20% if you are lucky. Cars can get the 40% on the electricity.

Reason is power plants are stationary and are designed to get the best efficiency and not have to worry about weight or what they have to do with materials to do it. Efficiency is usually around 60% factor in powerloss over transmission lines and you might get down to 40% efficiency.

This is the reason why it costs less mpg for electric car than a gas engine, diesel is harder to compete with due to the carnot cycle and the higher compression efficiency. I'd still rather have gas than diesel in the winter however.

what you do if you break down and the nearest tesla dealer is 1000 miles away?

yep but in 6/7 years your Camaro will still be going strong while the Tesla will need $12 000 (at today's price) new batteries.

bronco67 04-12-2013 07:13 AM

Tesla or Camaro?..definitely a serious first world problem. How will you do it?

I always find it interesting how so many ignore how terrible those batteries are for the environment. Really, really bad.

How do you figure? The elctricity that charges the batteries in a Tesla has to come from someplace. Canada is a large producer of hydro, nuclear and fossil-fueled electricity, all of which have heavy-duty environmental impacts.

If I had a choice between a Camaro and a Tesla, I would go with the Tesla. Everyone has a Camaro, but no one here in town has a Tesla. However, I'm done with my speed demon days and much more into four wheel drive now.

No one seems to factor this in. How much would it cost to fully charge your car? The cost of power is going up faster than the price of gas these days...

Wow. I saw this image and freaked. Ran out to check and make sure the windmill that generates more than enough electricity for my house was not smoking.

No all electricity is produced that way.

Yeah, but MOST is - nuclear, coal, natural gas, hydro-electric - all have their environmental costs.

Not necessarily. I finance my cars, but I have really good rates. 1.9% on my Infiniti and Corvette.

No, at least, not here in Quebec anyway. Comparing apples to apples, it costs $0.08 cents of electricity to go the same range as $1.40 per litre of gas. Even a decent milage car at 11 Litres per 100 Kilometers, a driver saves over $3500 a year in energy costs.

Not really. First they are the same batteries as you have in your cellphone and laptop. (Actually, about thousands of them). The cars don't produce polluting exhaust or require polluting gas (or oil!) and if properly recycled at the end of its life, the environmental impact is much much less than a regular gas car.

I know just how you feel. I am *almost* done with being a speed demon. I want comfort but I also want fun. Lots of fun. Getting old sucks. :)

The PRODUCTION of energy pollutes, yes, but the use of that energy in a Tesla does not.

If you add it up, the PRODUCTION of Gas + the USE of that gas pollutes much more than the production & use of electricity.

Also some countries such as Canada have super-clean electricity. Some places in the US, and most of China, rely on coal to generate electricity which I agree is just insane.

Because its cheap to borrow money right now. You can buy a car for 0% or 1% while still negotiating the best possible price. If I invest $50k into a GIC or Term Deposit, and borrow to buy a car, I come out about 2-3% ahead after a few years.

Of course... but the question is, which has the lowest impact?

You forgot again that batteries need replacing, if you factor in that cost savings are much lower, if any :2 cents:

Difficult to say producing electricity already isn't all that clean and rare earth mining is a nasty business.

I'm pretty sure these type of batteries are usually recycled. Sure it's bad if you just toss it in the landfill, much the same as if you just dump oil on the ground. However, we don't just dump oil on the ground and we don't just toss car batteries in the landfill.

dyna mo 04-12-2013 12:11 PM

First, it?s necessary to understand the contents of our ESS. The cells in our battery are composed mainly of lithium metal oxides. They are manufactured in Japan, a country with very strict environmental laws. Emissions and effluents are strictly controlled and monitored. The cells meet the requirements set forth by the Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment 2002/95/EC (commonly referred to as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive or RoHS). In other words, they do not contain any of the following:

Lead
Mercury
Cadmium
Hexavalent chromium (chromium xxx or Cr6+)
Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
Above and beyond RoHS, our lithium ion cells contain no heavy metals, nor any toxic materials. In fact, our cells and ESS, by law, could be disposed of by putting them in a landfill. However, we have no intention of landfilling our ESS.

we have been working closely with Kinsbursky Brothers, Inc.(KBI)/Toxco to implement a recycling plan. The goal of this plan is the following:

maximize the amount of materials that can be reused;
maximize the amount of materials that can be recycled; and,
minimize energy consumption utilized during the transportation and recycling process;

Financing a car for 7 years seems odd to me even if the rates were really low. Why not pay it off quicker? Maybe it is a common car length loan in Canada but here it is usually 3, 4, or 5 years.

femdomdestiny 04-12-2013 12:46 PM

Last several weeks I was watching online all I could find about Tesla cars. After watching all that, I really can't understand why would someone buy gasoline (diesel) powered car compared to Tesla models.Even after only watching technology and how it is made, I already feel like I am driving chariots when I want to enter in my car. I've clearly understood advantages of electric cars and it is a revolution like it was when combustion engine became available. Even If I am big car lover and it is kind of my hobby, electric cars are future. No gasoline, no pollution, no oils, no transmission,no moving parts, no chains, no spark plugs, no filters.....and you are still faster then most sport cars, going 4.something seconds if you want to race. Not to mention cheaper driving.

compared to a 5/6 year warranty or 100, 000 miles

i guess one of expecting a lot less breakdowns, yes?

how much.. does it cost to fix electric cars these days?

georgeyw 04-12-2013 02:31 PM

You keep jerking yourself stupid over these electric cars yet you buy a v8...

Kind of ironic don't you think?

dyna mo 04-12-2013 02:49 PM

the important part of that lease deal tesla is advertising is it is due to fisker going bankrupt recently, and it happened very fast and is very ugly, thus my post about fisker above.

tesla is dealing with a consumer confidence issue, potential customers with $80k to spend on a car should be very concerned about that brand and dealer/service network not being around when their high-priced schnazzy electric car needs *calibrating*.

videobunch 04-12-2013 03:16 PM

My neighbor has one of these and he said it is great but he does not commute far and when he does he drives his other car. So you still need a backup car. Try to go on a family trip and have to sit every 300 miles for 4+hrs while you wait for the car to fill up. Just not seeing it.

Not figured out yet how this is the future. California has rolling blackouts when there is a strain on the grid so now we are all going to plug our cars in. I guess traffic will be better when the power is but I guess that is the same as if you did not fill up since the pumps are electric.

My feeling is the car is awesome, but electric is not the solution.
