DOJ certified letter?

I got a certified letter for a friend here in my mailbox(he using my address for mail) but hes too scared he doesn't want me to open it..:1orglaugh

Question is why would DOJ send someone a certified letter? :error

BIGTYMER 09-09-2012 05:36 AM

Why doesn't he open it and find out?

Avoiding the issue isn't going to make it go away.

BradBreakfast 09-09-2012 05:43 AM

So steam open it, if it's bad re-seal and return to sender writing "recipient not here" or "wrong address" on the envelope.

L-Pink 09-09-2012 05:45 AM

So you are being used as a mail drop and receive a letter from DOJ? Nice friend. Did you sign for the letter?

Brujah 09-09-2012 06:20 AM

Probably a summons. They'll try again.

Barry-xlovecam 09-09-2012 07:05 AM

You have to sign for the receipt of certified mail the postman will not just leave it in the mailbox.

Keep deflecting the fact that you must sign for a certified letter, it strengthens your fabricated story.

Not sure if the Feds do it, but some local/state agencies do. A friend of mine got charged in a robbery once, and was charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and a few other lesser crimes. He was sent a letter before they came to his house. Two days after he got the letter we were drinking and he decided to turn himself in the next day. An hour after I left they busted his door down.

BIGTYMER 09-09-2012 08:25 AM

I think xxweekxx just wet himself.

tony286 09-09-2012 08:47 AM

if you have the letter its too late in their eyes you got it. Minds well open it and see what it is.

brassmonkey 09-09-2012 08:57 AM

burn the lab and run! :1orglaugh

xxweekxx 09-09-2012 09:35 AM

Umm some of you are narrow minded thinkers..

I live in a downtown condo in a beautiful city in cali.. we have a door man who signs for ALL PACKAGES, FEDEX,UPS,USPS..

Now i have a friend who lived with me for a while because he didnt have a job and was looking for something to do in LA..

Anyway, i come home, i see i have a new letter in my condo box(ITS HIS CERTIFIED LETTER FROM DOJ).. makes sense now?

Im not stupid, ive been in this business all my life..IF I HAD A LETTER i would fucking open it ASAP and then lawyer up if needed to.. I WOULDNT SIT HERE asking you guys what is in the letter? jeez....

anyway carry on.. i forwarded it to the dude and sadly i dont know whats in there...besides i wouldnt do anything stupid enough to get me sued or get in trouble.. I value my freedom too much and ive been around way too long

Matt 26z 09-09-2012 09:45 AM

Crappy ending. I want my money back.

You could have at least lied to us. Maybe around noon say you may open it. Start questing the steam method around 3. Then by 6 you open it and post that it says many porn sites are being investigated for something.....

I'd still be careful about the situation. You definitely do not want to keep acting as a mail drop as that is usually illegal in many jurisdictions. Make your friend file a forwarding address with the post office.

As for the letter it could be many things. Maybe they want him as a witness in an investigation?

alias 09-09-2012 11:28 AM

Should have marked it "RTS: Moved" and returned it.

Sunny Day 09-09-2012 11:55 AM

letter

Open the letter. See if it's something simple, call the local US Attorney's office and explain how you received the letter via doorman and accidentally opened it and explain he moved.

Something bad, call your friend first, then call the local US Attorney's office and explain how you received the letter via doorman and accidentally opened it and explain he moved. If it's bad they'll find him anyway and not bust your door down.

People open mail accidentally all the time by not looking at who it is addressed to. Just assume if it's in their mailbox it's theirs.

Question is why would DOJ send someone a certified letter? :error

If the DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE is sending mail to your house, and your friend is using your mailing addresses, you should open that email. If he's in trouble with the DOJ and didn't tell you, he's no friend of yours. If he didn't know about it, opening the mail will help him out. If he's a scumbag, opening the email and calling the DOJ about it makes you a good citizen. If you're letting him use your mailing address but he's doing something illegal where he has to claim your address as his own, you are a better friend to him then he is to you. Regardless, you probably don't want to fuck around. Open the letter, call your lawyer, protect yourself.

Maybe a jury duty letter?

Barry-xlovecam 09-09-2012 02:09 PM

18 USC §1702

Whoever takes any letter, postal card, or package out of any post office or any authorized depository for mail matter, or from any letter or mail carrier, or which has been in any post office or authorized depository, or in the custody of any letter or mail carrier, before it has been delivered to the person to whom it was directed, with design to obstruct the correspondence, or to pry into the business or secrets of another, or opens, secretes, embezzles, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1702

I would send it back "Received in Error -- Addressee Unknown" and thank your neighbour :P

epitome 09-09-2012 02:12 PM

If it was from the DOJ they wouldn't check the box to let an agent sign it. It would have to be signed for by the person it is addressed to.
