I need another animal like I need a hole in my head, but this one belonged to my daughter and she can't keep him so he's coming home with me. He is a full blooded Great Dane.... he'll be bigger than half of my mini horses. lol

We are naming him Dobby.... he's badass, but if I remember right, these dogs are about as useless as a 3rd boob. lmao

He is cute, currently i have 2 irish setters and a cat but somehow they fullfill my time and make me relaxed so i am going to get 2-3 more dogs so i can have fun :D

A 3rd boob is useless? HAH! Is that a challenge? I am pretty sure I could find a use depending on 3rd boob placement

I always hated Great Danes, but something about him won me over.... not sure what it is. I like DOGS. not paper weights. lol

my baby boy Godric (also full blooded great dane) just 9 months old a couple weeks ago. He's ~110lbs and the best dog i've ever owned. i started his training really early and it paid off. walks off leash without any problems, no aggression, total couch potato.

Do you mind if I ask if they are hard to house break? Or what kind of temperament they have, as in with other animals? I have several other animals and this guy is just 3 months old, so I know little to nothing about them.

My oldest daughter had a full grown one she is keeping, but due to circumstances, she can't keep him, so since I fell in love with him, I am taking him. I haven't spend much time around hers, Jake, but he is a total laid back lazy ass dog. I have never even been around them except for these two and very very little there.

I don't even know what it was about him, but the instant I met him, he was trying to get in the car with me and come home and my daughter kept saying he hated cars, but was trying to get into mine with me. lol

This is her other one, her baby, Jake... he lets this puppy sleep on top of him, he sleeps with my grand daughter when she visits them.. he seems to be a total doll. I just have no experience with these dogs... I have always had Boxers and Shepherds. lol

I bet he's going to eat me out of house and home. lol

Dobby's dad. I am being told he is going to be massive... I may be getting a bit scared here. lol

Keep in mind every dog is different and I work solely from home so I was able to REALLY push the house breaking hard. It took him a week or 1.5 weeks to completely house train him. I just made it a habit of taking him outside every 30 minutes or so and working with him. I think as a breed, Great Danes are HIGHLY intelligent. He picked up on his training at a very young age VERY well (sit, down, heel, stay, up, leave it, etc). Our Great Dane has an amazing temperament, our toddler can reach into the dogs mouth and pull toys out and the dog doesn't even care, just wags his tail. Our toddler also sits on him all the time. As far as with other animals, our dog is EXTREMELY submissive and has never even so much as growled at another dog or animal. Early exposure is key, so take him out in public as much as possible at a young age and make sure he's around a wide array of animals.

Just some words of advice that we learned the hard way:

Some Danes have ridiculously sensitive stomachs. I know ours had really bad diarrhea from 6-7 months old and nothing could really stop it besides medicine from the vet. Make sure you get him on a really high quality food (we feed CANIDAE ALS). If it's a male, do your research on neutering him and don't always listen to what your vet says. It's recommended by MOST reputable breeders who have been breeding these dogs for a LONG time that you wait until at least 1.5 years before you neuter them. Your dog will probably develop puppy acne ~6-7 months old and have another bout of it ~9 months old. Clean his chin and face after each feeding and it will help. :)

Jake let's my grand daughter sit on him and watch tv and she uses him as a pillow at bedtime, he insists on sleeping with her when she visits my daughter. He let's Dobby sleep on top of him now. lol

I work from home too and my daughter is home schooled, so we made pretty fast work with Kasey (my shepherd) on the housebreaking thing.. so maybe this won't be bad. Kasey is an outside dog, so will he be, BUT in bad weather or when needed, they come in the house and I like them to be house broken when they do.

I have Kasey on Lamb and Rice, she has a sensitive stomach too. I don't feed any of my animals corn based food, that is horrible on their stomachs, all animals in my opinion, so we feed them well. I also give them a lot of what I eat, if it is safe for me, as a diabetic, it can't be bad for them.. so they eat a great deal of what I do, and yes, including veggies. lol

I will remember that about getting him neutered. She had a solid black one, she got her spayed at 9 months as her vet told her and it killed her, she didn't know this til she took Jake to a different Vet

No kidding, right? I just seen him this morning after telling her I'd take Dobby late last night. That motherfucker is bigger than literally every mini horse I have but one... I pray he isn't going to be THAT big, they don't eat much, I don't think I'd get that lucky with him that big. lol

My youngest daughter actually wanted to call him Scooby..... but she was out voted. lol

I have the Dane's cousin, the English mastiff. great dog for sure... 11 months about 130lbs. very sweet. one thing I did was start feeding him raw hamburger as a puppy. changed his whole personality almost immediatly... made the little guy more attentive, smarter and much happier. the big dogs don't eat much when they get older becaue the stop growing and basically sleep and sit around all day..

Well the not eating me out of house and home makes me feel better. My daughter told me they don't eat much, but I know how people can be when they are trying to get you to take an animal you don't need.... oh he is good, he doesn't eat much. blah blah blah. lol

Raw meat, isn't that bad for them? I always heard it would cause worms. I know my dad used to feed it to my shepherd I had when I was little, but I heard it was bad for them later.

I watch what I feed my animals like I watch what I feed myself. lol

people say all kinds of shit... since I've feed my dog raw hamburger he's been much happier. I mix it with the kibbles... not as much now.. i alternate between that and the stuff that looks like bologna.

also be aware large breeds grow very fast and have days where they don't feel good. won't eat, lay around, sleep etc... then they will eat like hell and look taller every morning when they get up... it's a cycle with them.. Killer was gaining 5+lbs a week for some time. he's been with me since he was 8 weeks and 18lbs, now 11 months and 130lbs. so in 9 months he gained 112lbs...

one of Killer's fav things in ther world is marrow bones from the butcher... doggy crack for sure...

When I was about 10 years old we had a Great Dane for about a year. He was a rescue. A guy that lived down the street from us had three of them and he got his kicks by putting one bowl of food out and watching them fight for it. He got arrested for animal cruelty and my mom agreed to take one of the dogs.

I think he was a Harlequin Dane because he was white with black spots. He was very sick and hurt when we got him, but after a little while once he healed up and got used to us and realized he was in a good place he was a great dog. We lived out in the country so he loved to run around our yard and have us throw the Frisbee for him. He thought he was a 10 pound lap dog and always wanted to lay on you or crawl into bed with you.

One day he just disappeared. We searched all over for him, but never did find him. It was too bad. He had a tragic life, but was a great dog while I got to know him.

I keep my dane a little on the thin side and he eats ~7 cups of food a day. You can most definitely feed your dog raw, but it's not recommended that you mix a raw diet and a kibble diet because the two food types digest at different rates and can cause bowel issues. However, if you do choose to feed raw, go for it. Dogs have been eating a raw diet for thousands of years and as long as you feed good, quality meat, he/she will be fine :) I considered feeding mine a raw diet, but my wife couldn't stomach it ;) If you do decide to feed raw, good luck finding a vet who doesn't think you're going to kill your dog. Veterinary schools are funded by companies like Science Diet and veterinary students are brainwashed by those companies that kibble is the only way to go. There are people who swear by feeding raw. A good balanced diet of raw meat: organ meat, chicken backs, whole chickens, hearts, livers, kidneys, etc, will do just fine with your dog. Just google "barf diet" and you'll find TONS of information about it. A lot of times, if you find the right local butcher, it's cheaper than feeding kibble.

EDIT: raw bones are absolutely fine for dogs, it's the cooked bones that will splinter in the dogs mouth and cause problems.

are you kidding? dogs eat poo of other dogs and rotten hare and such! if you wanna serve it some real deli, fill a bucket with 50/50 rumen and udder, then put a lid on the bucket and PUT IT IN THE SUN ... when the lid pops open BY ITSELF its ready for feeding ... you will be AMAZED how exited yer dog will get - and eat it in no time ... remember, dogs are nothing more than domesticated WOLFS :2 cents:
