Best place to live in Eastern Europe

Hi there,

I am looking for a city in Eastern Europe to live for under US$800 a month. Is this possible at all?

Here is what I would like the city to have:
- clean water, stable power supply
- good internet connection
- welcome foreigners
- affordable groceries (above average quality)
- near to airport where I could take ryanair
- easy access to parks, markets, malls, libraries, affordable, restaurants

I am planning to stay there for 2 to 3 months, with possibility to extend it.

The next qusetion is, which country is the largest exporter in the Eastern European bloc (exporting to North America)?

Your suggestion will be appreciated.

I would imagine short term rentals cost more than that. Especially if you want internet already installed.

And what languages can you speak?

Paul Markham 07-25-2012 01:04 AM

Not the Czech Republic.

loreen 07-25-2012 01:08 AM

Romania has the world’s second fastest Internet at about 15 megabytes per second (mbps), second behind only South Korea. To put that in perspective, that’s nearly 5 times the average connection an American has in their home :)

You can't go wrong with Budapest. Got everything on your list, plus the hottest chicks ever.

k0nr4d 07-25-2012 01:19 AM

Wrocław, Poland.

Has airport with tons of ryanair flights, alot of apartment buildings have 100mbit+ internet, relatively cheap to live in, good food, fun nightlife, and pretty much everyone speaks english.

Amazing Hungary can be termed Eastern Europe bordering Austria
Same with the Czech Republic, what a farce.
You can find what you are looking for, you will just have to remember
to pack your nuts as you are headed to Ukraine. :1orglaugh

Alternatively this too is realistic. Just don't confuse central europe with eastern europe. :2 cents:

for 800 including renting the house or condo? not possible anywhere :2 cents:

Despite being literally the very center of europe, alot of people still consider this to be eastern europe

Very possible...students live on half of that. He's not going to have a big villa with pool but can definately live in small bachelor suite and eat instant noodles.

Vapid - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-25-2012 01:31 AM

yeah I was just looking at it on the map. Austria is dead center.
Even in the very East of Europe,
the part bordering Russia,
$800 is not going to go far.
lucas131 is factoring in weed mind you :P
Try Belarus lol

oh well, if he like living like that, that is possible. living in same room with few more students and enjoy that food from fridge, maybe he can go even once per month to get few beers in bottle from some supermarket sale ... not sure if that is what he is looking for :winkwink:

mbps are megabits per second, not megabytes

Read MB/s, that was a quote, but Romania having the world’s second fastest Internet is a fact :)

If Romania is a great place to live, why is every other country in the EU full of Romanians?

They're nearly as bad as Liverpudlians always claiming Liverpool is the greatest city in the world but not living there.

voa 07-25-2012 02:46 AM

Skopje Macedonia.... with 800 dollar per month you can live good, quality food especially vegetables airport is on 20 km from the city, no ryanair flights but wizzair flights to europe starting 10 euro one way ( Milan, Venice, Eidhoven, Dortmund,Basel,London,Meeningen) some other cheap flights to Istanbul, Brussell, Paris, Rome. Its forigner friendly place its 200 km away from Thessaloniki in Greece ( from the sea) very close to the mountains.

lucas131 07-25-2012 02:55 AM

btw are you still sexy, and a girl? :) maybe you can live with me somewhere for free :)

Always worth a try

pigface 07-25-2012 03:22 AM

Zagreb Croatia... nice city, nice girls, not that from from the beach...

Lykos 07-25-2012 03:35 AM

Belgrade, Serbia. City with great night life and beautiful girls:)
800$ won't bring you super good life but you will be able to easy pay flat (200eur) and pay other things including internet 100eur, and let's say eat for remaining of money:)

Klen 07-25-2012 03:41 AM

800 USD is 16,822.80 CZK. A bit small amount but doable, you'l need to find cheapest shared room(5000 czk is minimum)and you will still have 11000 czk left for whores, food, beer and whatever you need.
See expats.cz for more info. There are cheaper cities but doubt any of them have transportation quality like Prague.

yes thats it, nothing better than doing adult business in shared room :) otherwise you have to pay 10k/mo and more for 1+1 apartment in prague, and almost everywhere here, then you have 6k for whores :)

kazymjir 07-25-2012 04:39 AM

Consider Pripyat in Ukraine

15 Mbps? Sweden have 100 Mbps, in some cities they even offer 1000 Mbps.
I bet they do the same in both Norway, Finland and Denmark.

JerseyPuma 07-25-2012 04:57 AM

agree with lykos. if partying and women are on your list then Belgrade is worth a look. i was there last summer for a week...people are really nice too, even to ugly americans.

Romania has the second fastest Internet speeds on the planet, clocking in at 15.27 Mbps, and a trio of Eastern European countries round out the top five, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Latvia. The United States musters a very pedestrian 4.93 Mbps ? good for 26th in the world ? while China, home to the world?s largest Internet population, manages a dismal 1.96 Mbps.
That is for the country as a whole by the way. You can get 100mb/s in many places and probably more.

Ross 07-25-2012 06:25 AM

It isn't Eastern Europe but I'd recommend Malta. You can get a nice 1 bedroom place with a Sea View for $800 per month. Everyone speaks great English, year round sunshine and Ryanair flys out of the main airport, cheap vacations or trips home to visit family.

I lived there for 1 year and it was great.

MaDalton 07-25-2012 07:08 AM

in CZ it would be doable but not enjoyable

I agree, but each of us has different standards of "enjoyment".
When I was a teenager, I had a chance to meet a guy who was working at a gas station, filling tanks some 8 hours a day, often in cold/chilling nightshifts.

He was the happiest person in the world. He came from Vietnam (or some other not-so-lucky country, can't remember exactly), where he had spend his early adult life working in muddy fields 12 hours a day, for the yearly equivalent of what he made in ONE day in Europe.

He considered himself very lucky, and rightly so - he could now afford to buy all the food he could possibly want to eat, had a warm dry place and some spare time too.

Sorry for the slightly pathetic tone, but I often think of this guy whenever I listen to myself or others saying that life is hard.

Life is not hard for any of us - not even if you have 800$ in Prague.

klinton 07-25-2012 08:01 AM

wroclaw, poland :)

it all depends on the usd to pln rate though..... now it is very good :)

~2500 pln can get you 800 pln for nice room + 1700 pln for living
or

1300 pln for single room flat and 1300 for living....

which is doable , but as the "unexpected" costs appear, it can be tough task ;]

SAMANTAmax 07-25-2012 08:05 AM

with less then $800 you can live in Albania!!

I know a dutch guy who earn only 10k czk in Prague and i am sure he having great fun. It's all depend what needs you have. For some people even making 10k$ wouldn't not be enough for them to be happy.
