Man sues Wal-Mart for $1 million after 'all black people must leave' announcement made over P.A system

A Winslow, New Jersey man, is suing Wal-Mart for $1 million because he claims he was traumatised by a public address announcement directed at black shoppers.

Donnell Battie claims that the intercom system at the Wal-Mart on the Black Horse Pike in Washington Township was hijacked and someone announced, 'Attention, Wal-Mart customers. All black people must leave the store.'

In his lawsuit, Battie says that Wal-Mart was negligent, careless, reckless and showed deliberate indifference in not controlling access to the P.A system.

I think they will settle because it's cheaper than fighting an idiot. But they might think it will cost them in PR cause some people suck up news stories like oxygen. Maybe they will make him contest that it wasn't really their fault or something to that extent to cover image.

Obviously Walmart didn't want black people in an urban area to leave the store at least not before spending their money, and probably more black people shop at Walmart than white people.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and someone said the f word and some girl covered her ears and said "my virgin ears!" in dismay. True story.

It doesnt matter since my point wasn't a 1:1 comparison. It was a comparison of something going in the ear and the person acting like they're damaged.

That's just dumb. C'mon. When I was young, I'd jack the PA phones and announce stupid shit all the time. They are sitting in the middle of the store or easily accesible in the electronics area WITH codes to the overhead speakers, taped to the damn things! Any kid (or childish adult) with mischief on his/her mind can do it.

If get emotionally distressed over a single comment over a PA system, you don't deserve to live.

That was my first thought, but the more I think about it, I think this might be a situation where Walmart just settles. There's dozens of youtube videos of kids going into Walmart and talking nonsense over the intercom as a prank. Clearly they have a system that allows easy access by the public, so the guy may have a case that Walmart isn't doing more to keep their system inaccessible to the public, (like requiring a code by the store attendant before they are able to speak into the system).

Obviously the guy would have to prove some level of emotional/physical distress because of the prank. Just seems anytime these days that accusations of racial bias/profiling/prejudice are thrown around, corporations want to stay as far away as possible and will settle to avoid public scrutiny even if they weren't directly negligent.

It reminds me of the same exact thing from March of 2010.
