One look at that hole he called a bunker is enough to sound the alarms that this man is unstable. There wasn't sane and rational thinking put into the design of that "bunker." It's a shame that his paranoia and delusion made him take his wife and child with him. This man needed a therapist, not a bunker.

However, based on the article, I would say this guy is far from a gun nut. His "ammo stockpile" would be eaten up by the average gun nut during a single day at the gun range. He had a few guns and a few more gun parts, nothing that suggests he was a gun nut. I know people who consistently drop 5k a week on guns and ammo. However, none of them talk about doomsday shit or stockpile water, fuel, and food. They just like shooting.

For a guy who has spent 8 years building his "fort" he sure didn't have it stocked very well. Besides the fact that he killed his family, the biggest concern I see here is that anybody could have found his bunker and had access to his guns and ammo. What kind of "survivalist" doesn't secure his shit better than this? Dude was clearly a different breed. :disgust

Look into abandon mines and then file a claim on one of them.

Very sad. Sad that he shot his kid and his wife, but also sad that he or any of these other "preppers" live their lives this way, which is in total, complete fear. I tend to think gun nuts are the same. Having a couple of hunting rifles is ok and maybe I could possible understand a single hand gun. But machine guns? Sniper rifles? guns with extended clips? Ammunition stockpiles? Talk about terrified people. Very sad.

This guy was not a prepper, he was simply nuts. 8 years and that's what he had to show for it? Preppers do what they do to protect their family in case shit hits the fan. They don't kill their own family. Media will play this up and paint all preppers as nutjobs like this guy.

Also there is a HUGE difference between preppers and doomsday preppers. I for one think the 2012 doomsday shit is just that, a pile of shit. I prep for solar flares. It does not hurt to be prepared as long as all the shit you buy can be resold easy without losing money if it's never needed.

It's appalling how most of you think being a "prepper" as he was labeled has anything to do with him killing his family and himself. If there was a news article that read "French Fries and Heroine found next to a dead man", half of you would blame the death on the French Fries, and the other half would say it was the mixture of the French Fries with the heroine.
