Most realistic war movie of all time?

No Hollywood romance to enhance.

What's the most realistic war movie ever?

I'm going to go with All Quiet on the Western Front.

L-Pink 04-06-2012 08:33 AM

Das Boot

saving private ryam as far as footage, that and band of brothers...

pimpmaster9000 04-06-2012 08:46 AM

Well to be able to judge how realistic a war movie is you must first be in a real war to know what its like...

sperbonzo 04-06-2012 08:54 AM

I don't think any movie does it very well as a complete film.... At least compared to my experience and people that I know that have been there.

Restrepo, Das Boot, and All Quite on the Western Front were good

.... but some outstanding scenes are:

The beach landing scene in "Saving Private Ryan"
Quite a few scenes in "Band of Brothers"
A couple of scenes in "A Long Day's Dying"
Believe it or not, the beginning of the fire fight scene in "Forrest Gump" really captured what incoming tracers look like pretty well....
"Cross of Iron" had a lot of very realistic scenes also.

Band Of Brothers... In my house in Phoenix we had surround sound, and I stayed up late to watch the scene of the Battle Of The Bulge. It was like 2am when they are talking quietly in the snow, and I kept turning it up to hear them. Suddenly I hear someone whistling behind me... I turn to look... Turns out it's an incoming mortar and suddenly WW2 breaks out in my living room at full volume at 2am. I fell off the couch, knocked over my drink, landed on the dog... Wife comes running out in a panic....

Funny shit.

Admitted by whom? Your reptilian over-lords that act through the Royal family (like they have any actual authority to shape world events)?

As to the actual thread discussion, there are a lot of good movies here that might seem realistic, but having never served in any branch of the armed forces I do not feel qualified to say which are more rooted in reality than the rest. However, I do remember quite a few stories of veterans having strong reactions to viewing Saving Private Ryan.

Not a "war movie" per se, but a great movie that includes the subject of war:

Peckinpah's "Iron Cross" is pretty much the anti-romantic vision of war. "Johnny Got His Gun" is another one. "Breaker Morant", "Gallipoli", and "The thin red line" also are un-romantic visions.

For the record... "Saving Private Ryan" is one of the MOST romantic visions of war, imo. A few well cut battle gory sequences don't change that.

Good way to know the difference... If you feel like shit and hate the idea of war and want to join Johnny Clips in a world free of fucked up Governments then you saw an "un-romantic" vision of war. If you feel like "thank God for the heroes that died for me to enjoy these freedoms while trying their best to kill others to deprive them of theirs" then you saw a "romantic" vision of war.

Pigshit.

theking 04-06-2012 04:01 PM

There can never be a realistic war movie made as the sound of war is horrific (the sound alone can kill)...and the smell of war is sickening.

Evil Chris 04-06-2012 09:44 PM

Not really a war movie, but another one of my faves, Apocalypse Now.

travs 04-06-2012 10:02 PM

Starship Troopers..LOL

Mutt 04-06-2012 10:13 PM

never having been in one how would i know really. and for the guys who have been in war and in battle, you've only seen it from your point of view - all action is different, the invasion of Normandy is sure different than say what's going on in Afghanistan or Vietnam. most soldiers never find themselves under fire.

i thought Platoon did an amazing job of capturing what it must have felt and looked like to suddenly be plopped down in the jungles of Vietnam. that was one scary war.

movies are 2-3 hours long, they can't really be realistic in that respect.

Mr Pheer 04-06-2012 10:54 PM

Blackhawk Down is a piece of Hollywood bullshit, and I know that from first hand experience.

A complete embarrassment in a long list from humanity. It's quite easy to prevent and stop wars. Quit signing up. Like George Carlin, I blame the soldiers for signing up:

Wars have been fought forever, as long as someone can take something from other people with force you'll have wars.

Newer saw anything so strong and full of emotions. Anti war messge based on true story. To understand all you, I guess you need to be from that region, because movie is full of symbolic and black humour. But anyway, worth of watching..
