Anybody know what that "certain quantity" was? The thread title is misleading as the video does not suggest Newt advocates the death penalty for smoking dope, but in 1997 proposed the death penalty for those in "possession of marijuana above a certain quantity."

I mean, if you're busted with 50 lbs of the stuff, you're obviously not a harmless pot smoker - you're an up and coming Tony Montana.

Criminalizing narcotics effectively takes away the governments control over a substance that users are addicted to. Users have no choice but to USE. They must buy.

The "products" quality goes down down down and the price goes up up up.

This in effect rewards the criminals with an extremely profitable new market...how ironic: the lawmakers and police who criminalized drugs are the drug mafias BEST FRIEND and the wind in the sails of crime.

A fresh supply of dealers and hookers are created when ordinary users get arrested and incarcerated over smoking a plant. They can not get a job, because they are now "addicts" how had to steal or whore to buy the substance that they should be getting without rewarding the drug mafia with a handsome profit for.
Most of them now have no choice but to become dealers and pro hookers because their future is basically ruined.

Society is so afraid of "addicts" that it votes for the idiot who will be even more stubborn with this "War FOR drugs" crap that is a spectacular failure in every way imaginable.

Crack/Meth/Paco and other cheap drugs are just an answer/adaptation to a failing drug war, even cheaper even more addictive and destructive drugs.

Under the bill (the "The Drug Importer Death Penalty Act of 1996") the "certain quantity" was to be determined by the Attorney General, with the guideline being that it should be "an amount the Attorney General has determined is equal to 100 usual dosage amounts."

So, 100 times the "dosage amount" of marijuana, whatever the hell that means.

I should think that with a few puffs being enough to get most people high (provided the weed is any good), 100 times that amount would come to significantly less than 50 lbs. ;-)

Unless you are illegally growing it yourself, ALL marijuana comes from someone illegally SELLING pot. Almost everyone who smokes pot is, on some level, a dealer. Even if you buy $10 worth, to split with your cousin - then YOU are the dealer. It's a very fine line...
