Las Vegas Police Beating the Be-Jesus out of Camera Dude Caught On Tape

Welcome to Amerika!

NaughtyRob 04-28-2011 10:26 AM

That dude is gonna make some serious $$$.

sperbonzo 04-28-2011 10:27 AM

That is insane. I will defend police when I see them doing the right thing, but this was COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY WRONG. Like I have said before, I was a reserve deputy for about 1.5 years in AZ and I understand what they go through, but this had no excuse and they should be fired, sued and jailed.

For all that I normally defend the police, I would NEVER defend this. It's dangerous and beyond wrong

SmokeyTheBear 04-28-2011 10:32 AM

no actual assault on camera.. = no $$

Nikki_Licks 04-28-2011 10:45 AM

Hopefully he will sue the fuck out of the police department and the idiot cop will lose his job in the process :thumbsup

Las Vegas officer in videotaped beating suspended
The Associated Press

Updated: 04/24/2011 06:16:58 PM PDT

LAS VEGAS?A Las Vegas police officer under investigation in the videotaped beating of a man has been suspended with pay pending completion of an internal investigation.
Officer Derek Colling was suspended April 1, two days after the Clark County district attorney's office dropped all charges against videographer Mitchell Crooks, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Crooks was standing in his driveway videotaping police March 20 as they investigated a burglary report across the street. When Crooks refused to stop recording, Colling allegedly attacked and beat him, with much of the altercation recorded by the camera.

Crooks said he initially told the officer he didn't live there and now regrets not telling Colling that he was in fact standing in his own driveway. After Crooks repeatedly ignored Colling's orders to turn off the camera, the officer is accused of grabbing him by the shoulder and throwing him down. The officer also is accused of kicking and punching Crooks, and breaking his nose.

In his arrest report, Colling wrote that Crooks grabbed his shoulders "and attempted to take me to the ground. I in turn took him to the ground."

Crooks was booked into jail for investigation of battery on a police officer and obstruction of justice.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Christopher Laurent said he later dismissed the charges because the police report was vague.

Colling has been involved in two fatal shootings in his more than five years as a Las Vegas police officer. County coroner's juries ruled that both shootings were justified.
Crooks, 36, gained attention in 2002 when he videotaped two Inglewood, Calif., police officers beating a 16-year-old boy.

Crooks first tried to sell that tape, then refused to give it to prosecutors. He then was jailed on old warrants from unrelated drunken driving and petty theft charges. Civil rights advocates branded it as retribution.

Since 2003, he has lived in Las Vegas, where he shoots video for nightclubs.

I generally love the police and think they do the toughest job there is --- but there's a large number of them that forget that they're OUR employees. They're not out in the public to do shit like this to the people they're supposed to be protecting.

MrBottomTooth 04-28-2011 10:51 AM

5 years on the force and he's killed two people already? Seems like he probably just lives for shit like that.

yeah, like straight out of the movies tough cop:2 cents:

Robbie 04-28-2011 10:56 AM

And people wonder why cops get shot all the time. Most people are more afraid of cops than they are of "bad guys". :(

lazycash 04-28-2011 10:58 AM

Not real bright to be hanging around a police burglary investigation when your last name is Crooks and you have outstanding warrants for theft.

_Richard_ 04-28-2011 10:58 AM

that is a great name

Phoenix 04-28-2011 11:05 AM

what..that is totally his fault

he has no business being on his driveway and using a video camera

that camera was probably not made in the usa.

police can do no wrong

just kidding...this is typical behaviour

magicmike 04-28-2011 11:17 AM

wow, he is lucky that the videotape survived. How many of these cases go unresolved because the evidence disappears?

Ayla_SquareTurtle 04-28-2011 11:23 AM

Every cop who defends this loser, and every higher-up who gives the sign off to allow him back on to the streets, is just as guilty. They need to clean house here.

Amputate Your Head 04-28-2011 11:27 AM

Scary stuff there. Even with him saying No initially and changing to Yes here's my ID.. they clearly didnt fear him or suspect him of anything but video taping.

_Richard_ 04-28-2011 12:13 PM

seems like he had it coming

BlackCrayon 04-28-2011 12:15 PM

seeing all of these videos come out on what seems like a nearly daily basis makes you wonder how much more this happened before cameras were everywhere, when the cops *knew* they could easily get away with it. disgusting really.

Watch that again. the cop was in the right and the guy is wrong. On top of that it was a simple take down where the guy struggled.. Had this been a real beating it would have even sounded different.

Fist question from the cop. Can I help you. No. Just observing. Second question. Do you live here. No. ( thats trespassing. ) why were the cops there? Report of burglary in the area? Report of person peeping?? He wont get paid because of his own video.

perhaps they should of asked for his id before going apeshit on him..

V_RocKs 04-28-2011 12:33 PM

Wow... cop pretty much fucked up when he stated the suspect attacked him first. Clearly the cameraman was stationary until the cop took him to the ground. It's called perjury and for cops it means the death of your career.

Had the cop not said that he was completely within reason to figure the cameraman called in a fake reporting in order to tape cops and when he misspoke on whether or not he lived in the house, the cop totally had the right to question him and detain him in order to ascertain whether or not he legally could be on the property.

The problem is that he could have simply asked the guy to be really sure, because if he didn't live there, he was trespassing. Then when he recanted he could have arrested him for providing false information. But any real cop would have let him off with a warning.

What really happened is a bunch of cops showed up expecting to hunt down a suspect. He was high on adrenalin. He saw some guy with a video camera and his fight instincts turned on. Cop should be fired because he is a liability.

spunky99 04-28-2011 12:48 PM

cop asked if he lived there, he said no.. and they're investigating a burglary report across the street..

if you ask for it.. you will get it..

I can tell you that the cop's next action should have been to ask him for ID, and question him further. You don't just take someone down when they are not trying to flee or to resist in any way. Trespassing is a charge that is made by a home owner, not police, and if a broken nose and injured ribs don't constitute a real beating, then I guess you are some kind of real hero. In any case, there was NO cause for ANY kind of physical violence in this instance. The officer simply could have asked for ID and more questions as to what was going on.

Vegas police are Draconian. Just ask that guy that got killed at Costco last year.

When Mitchell Crooks checked out of the county jail last month and checked into a Las Vegas hospital, the 36-year-old videographer knew he had a fight on his hands.

His face was bloodied and bruised. His $3,500 camera had been impounded by police, and he faced criminal charges for battery on a police officer.

One month later, things have changed for Crooks.

The Clark County district attorney's office has dropped all charges, and Crooks has retained an attorney of his own. The Metropolitan Police Department has opened an internal investigation into the Las Vegas police officer, Derek Colling, who Crooks says falsely arrested and beat him for filming police.

And his camera -- which captured the entire March 20 altercation between Crooks and Colling -- has been returned.

There's a strange history here, too. Crooks is also the man who videotaped the 2002 police beating of Inglewood, California teen Donovan Jackson.

The officers in that case were suspended, fired, criminally charged (but not convicted), then later sued for racial discrimination, and were awarded $2.4 million in damages. One is back on the force.

When Crooks showed up in court to authenticate the video in that case, he himself was then arrested on outstanding theft and DUI warrants from three years earlier.

It's pretty clear to me the cop was asking if he lived in the house under investigation and he answered no.

I live here... the cops were tottaly juistified with that as shitty as it sounds...

like quoted

do you live here

answer

No

then the car is put in park cause now he;s broke the law trespassing....

people always try to be baddasses with cops and lose ...

simple answer

cop: Can I help you?

idiot: no sir just observing

cop : do you live here?

idiot: yes sir I do this is my house

bottom line is your not going to win an arguement with the cops... you may win in court but not on the street with the cop... he deserved the beating he got for trying to act like a baddass....

wdsguy 04-28-2011 03:22 PM

You always comply with the cops, nuff said.

brassmonkey 04-28-2011 03:33 PM

damn that's the kinds of cops that end up having a accident.

Elli 04-28-2011 04:25 PM

So he's on the ground, screaming "help" and NONE of the other cops come to check on the situation? If they did, what did the first cop tell them? here the RCMP aren't allowed to do shit all without another officer looking over their shoulder. It seems silly, but comes in handy in situations like this.

CYF 04-28-2011 04:31 PM

I hope he wins $$$$

thickcash_amo 04-28-2011 04:35 PM

Seemed like that guy made alot of noise and screamed a freaking lot for what he got...

That's because that's all you can do against a cop.

They can pull a gun on you, shoot you, taze you, beat the shit out of you, order you around...and you aren't allowed to defend yourself at all. Even if you struggle against them while they are beating your ass, they call it "resisting arrest"

Take that badge off of that fucker and take his gang of other guys wearing uniforms away and I wouldn't let him get away with two seconds of his bullshit. But with that badge? He can do whatever he wants to.

And yeah, you can "win" later in court. But that's AFTER he's had his way with you and broken your face and thrown you in jail and humiliated you. :(
