Cable Vs. Dsl: The Definitive Post

Why does it seem to me that the endless Cable vs. DSL battle will go on forever?

It's like Coke vs. Pepsi, McDonald's vs. Burger King, and Your Mom vs. a Deodorant Stick....the fucking war will never end.

I use cable...I always have...but I get the feeling that if I switched tommorrow (which I always tell myself I am going to do) I would have the same amount of quirks and problems and dissatisfaction with customer support.

Sheeit....I think at this point I should think about switching to a mouse on a wheel...fuck at least I could buy a snake and watch it eat that little rodent.

I mean honestly...have you ever seen a snake eat a cable modem or a DSL line filter?

God Bless Snakes and Mice.

there was a debate?

I thought it was brutally obvious that cable is far superior to dsl.

You are correct, there is not even a question, cable is FAR superior to dsl....Period and thats the bottom line:winkwink:

MrPopup 11-22-2002 02:32 AM

In the 4 plus years I have subscribed to 2 different Canadian cable ISP's I have had exactly ONE outage lasting longer then one day.

SpeakEasy 11-22-2002 02:34 AM

PureMeds, you need to stop crushing up your penis enlargement pills and smoking them......LMAO.....Just messing with ya :Graucho

BJ 11-22-2002 02:34 AM

I get 300-400k down on dsl. cable is dependant on how many people are using it. So the more subscribers=less speed. Which is crucial in a major city. But... cable may be better than dsl in areas with low subscribers, whereas dsl speed depends on how close you are to the local loop.

BJ 11-22-2002 02:38 AM

Amp... are you in the local loop?:Graucho

well.... you're partly right, but mostly wrong.
Cable is broken into nodes. There can only be so many people on a given node. There will never be slow speeds, because even if a node becomes maxed out, they can always break it into smaller nodes (unlikely) or boost the node. (probably)

let's see what else....

1. a big thick ass cable, versus two scrawny little phone wires. (shouldn't take rocket science to figure this one out)

2. Cable is readily available to virtually anyone with cable. And even to those without cable.... they'll fucking install the line.

3. Cable is not limited by distance as dsl is.

4. Cable is virtually never down, unless the modem dies or the provider blows a node.

5. Cable is cheaper than dsl.

BJ 11-22-2002 02:40 AM

hmm... shall we compare speeds??

the crap that your dsl company has been telling you PureMeds about too many cable subscribers = slow speed is nothing but a sales pitch bro... it has no basis in fact.

Yeah...but what is the best speed you've ever received that you can remember?

I remember....way back in my days of Playstation 1 IRC downloading, there was one dude who would consistently transfer to me at unbelievable speeds....like im talking 450mb in 100 minutes.

I remember the most amazed I ever was was this one dude from sweden who I swear was the second fastest dude I ever remember downloading from...

And finally...about 3 years ago...I remember a guy who had a publically accessible FTP anonymous site who had about 150 gigabytes of every type of software, console game, and vcd there was...always open...always online

Ahh...the good ol' days of "unfettered" ISP access.

I got a 1.5 gigabyte DivX rip of the LOTR studio screener DVD in 20 minutes off of Kazaa once.

Great quality, but the "This copy property of blah blah.." scroll across the screen every 1/2 hour.. lol.

cable's dependancy is on the company running it... even if it's AT&T cable.... each AT&T is essentially it's own little world... it's not one big ass company.... so if the cable company in that particular area wasn't maintaining their lines very well, then you're gonna have crappy service.

and there are a ton of reasons why service could suck...

bad company in that area
squirrels chewed through the lines
old lines
etc....

.:Frog:. 11-22-2002 02:56 AM

I've had both cable and adsl in Canada and think adsl is better. Cable seemed slower on average and had more downtime.

But remember there is no right or wrong.
Speeds vary depending on your house location, city population etc.

Cirrus 11-22-2002 02:58 AM

I had both and I liked the cable more

only a shitty installer would make it possible for you to do that....
I guarantee you'd never get it from an Amp install without a full set of cabling tools at your disposal.... and you can't buy those at the local Sears... :winkwink:

titmowse 11-22-2002 03:02 AM

eventually we'll adapt from the Internet to the TelekInternet. won't that be sweet?

Amputate Your Head 11-22-2002 03:10 AM

this is perfect.... (from the speed test page)

Quote:

Despite what some companies would like you to believe, DSL connections are shared Internet connections. With cable connections you share the connection to your ISP with your neighbors and it is true, with DSL you do not and so have your own private connection to your ISP. However, as you can see on our diagram, at the ISP all their users share the ISP's connection to the Internet. This applies to cable, DSL, satellite, dial-up? everything.

As a consumer shopping for a connection your best bet is to talk to people in your area who own the connections you're considering. Cable is highly dependent on the neighborhood and DSL is highly dependent on the physical distance from your house to the nearest ISP CO (central office). This means that experiences vary not only from city to city but even inside the city and inside the same provider. In addition to transmission speed you have to consider price, installation time, and customer support, all factors that depend on the ISPs, not the technology.

I have "56k For Eva" tattoed on my chest... :)

Juge 11-22-2002 04:49 AM

I've used DSL and am now on Cable.

My experience shows that Cable doesn't work a LOT of the time, and is fucking slow as hell during busy hours.

DSL is way better.
