When does someone cease to be a Newbie?

I just saw a one month old member call one of the original GFYers a 'newbie asshole', I can only assume because he has 560 fewer posts. This prompts me to ask the question;

How long is one considered a newbie? Is it for # of posts, length of time, or experience coming in?

NetRodent 11-08-2002 07:02 PM

I think you'd know the answer to that, if you weren't a newbie.

Cheshire 11-08-2002 07:03 PM

damn know it all veterans...

You can't be a newbie with a sig like that..

Fletch XXX 11-08-2002 07:05 PM

Can you walk in a room full of webmasters and start to talk about page rank, search terms, scripts, tour design, banner placement, effective free site modeling, etc.

When you can just hold your own in the game, thats all.

I dont think a day goes by where I dont tweak or learn something new.

[Labret] 11-08-2002 07:05 PM

Post count should not be seen as a measure of anything.

anything.

you're nothing but newbie ... (with an unbelievable eyes;)

gothweb 11-08-2002 07:07 PM

You can be a newbie with thousands of posts. You can be a newbie after years. Then again, you can be a non-newbie with only a few hundred posts, or a couple of months. Its an attitude.

Yes, I agree. I think this thread is about what makes a GFY newbie, not what makes for good business. Did I miss something?

cherrylula 11-08-2002 07:11 PM

I think most of the time things are not what they seem on this board.

...unless you're not a newbie and you know. :1orglaugh

Once you said you didn't have a problem with me. You starting something, kid? Cuz I'd rather not.

NetRodent 11-08-2002 07:15 PM

*sigh* Too many newbies arguing in this thread.

[Labret] 11-08-2002 07:16 PM

GOd I love watching a thread degenerate before my eyes.

Aza 11-08-2002 07:17 PM

everyone has shit to learn......newbies are dumb asses, NOT new webmasters! Well they are, but established webmasters can also be considered newbies purely because they are unknown!

newbies to me is a strange term!

The only thing that makes me go *god what a newb* is basically the ones coming in with guestions so fucking dumb that you can hardly think from laughing hard :)

Machete_ 11-08-2002 07:38 PM

hey you all, I was the "one month old member member"
And i did it because the other person dident get what I wrote at all. I already told Cheshire it wasent because of the amaount of post, but because of the way the person acted.. I just want to add, that I still see myself as a "newbie", but at least im not trying to be something im not

Like gothweb wrote:

I agree with Labrett

Once you can pay your bills and do this full time your not a Newb anymore.

If you can live off what you make in the industry without anyother income your not a newb anymore

Posts don't mean shit
Ah just finished the thread your talking about GFY newb
I guess I would be considered a GFY newb?

Still just a Tadpole

Setting: Dark room with sandalwood incense smoke wafting hauntingly in the shadows.

"When you snatch these marbles from my hand, Grasshopper, it will be time for you to leave the Temple of Newb."

RIGHT on.. that why i wrote this thread

Scootermuze 11-08-2002 07:57 PM

I think the word 'newbie' is being used more and more as an insult.. just by how it is included in some of the posts I read...

I've been at it since 96 and am a newbie in one area or another.. Always something new happening.. always something to learn..

Everyone is, or was a newbie.. Kinda like high school sophomores makin fun of the freshmen simply because they're freshmen.. :)

gothweb 11-08-2002 08:04 PM

I am a GFY newbie. I am an industry newbie. I am even a photography newbie. Just for the record.

I'm surprised nobody has pointed this out yet: you are no longer a newbie when you SHOW US YOUR TITS. Hint, hint.

I think newbie kinda has a tinge of a deragatory connotation, however I think keeping a fresh open mind rocks.

The context I generally hear 'newbie' throw around is a) when someone is annoying the shit out of a person with basic questions, or b) when someone is trying to up their dick-size scale in a lame verbal (my dog is bigger than yours) type of way

Great question, but after 4 years in this biz I still don't know the exact definition of a newibe, but as as I'm learning new shit I'll consider myself one :) and I hope that never stops

Mutt 11-08-2002 10:15 PM

more bullshit. "Newbie" is such a lamer's term. What year is this?
1995?

people need to establish a pecking order, make themselves feel better about themselves. It's a useless human trait.

I know so many people chasing 'player' status in this biz and i laugh at them because it's so futile, there will always be somebody bigger and better than you, people like that will just keep trying and never really satisfied where they are in life.

and EVERYBODY in this business is a NEWBIE at something. Nobody is a master at everything, this biz has a HUMONGOUS skill set range. There are people who run million dollar programs who
can barely make a simple webpage. There are Photoshop wiz's
who couldn't scare up 1,000 hits a day if their life depended on it.
TGP warriors who barely know how to balance their own bank book let alone run a webmaster affiliat program and so on and so on ........................
