Going Ubuntu

I am pondering going from Windows Vista to using ubuntu completely. Has anyone here done the switch? Any unexpected problems with drivers / software?

What kind of photo and video editing options do you have with ubuntu? Will most software work or have a mirror application for linux?

Any input on the matter is welcome :)

qxm 11-21-2008 03:34 PM

Ya gonna have to use wine m8... and from what Ive heard ... not all windows apps work even if u use wine...

fuzebox 11-21-2008 03:35 PM

Ubuntu detects hardware better than Windows does.

Rorschach 11-21-2008 03:36 PM

Try running ubuntu via vmware on your windows box for a while first - get used to it, learn your way around, try out some apps, make some beginner mistakes before you put ubuntu on a real computer.

Princeton Cash - BANNED FOR LIFE 11-21-2008 03:37 PM

The Gimp for photo editing http://www.gimp.org/

The Duck 11-21-2008 03:45 PM

I am testing it out first with the method described by Rorschach but I am liking it so far.

What about firefox plugins? Will the same plugins I use on my vista firefox work on linux firefox?

candyflip 11-21-2008 04:54 PM

Yes on the plugins.

I've done it, converted 50 workstations to Ubuntu. It's great. Cut down on the spyware and bullshit tremendously. It could use more productivity enhancement tweaks though but I'm sure that's confined to a large workstation environment. Go for it!

BradM 11-21-2008 04:59 PM

Linux is funs!

ubuntu is a great linux distro

just download the cd and burn it, you can use the live cd and play with it, get used to it etc then install it with that same cd if you want.

I just ran the live cd, worked well and I like ubuntu but when I came back to my ordinary Vista install the standard font for everything is changed.

Ice 11-21-2008 06:51 PM

I have a desktop at home running ubuntu/xp dual boot. I run gimp on ubuntu and yes to the FF plug ins.

Ubuntu is so stable and picks up hardware much easier then windows.

My main machines are a 17" Mac laptop and a Mac G5 though I love OSX

The Duck 11-21-2008 07:07 PM

For some reason the ubuntu live cd disabled cleartype settings in vista so I had to enable that again.

The Duck 11-23-2008 09:03 AM

I think I will go dual boot for now to learn the system.

Yes it is good to have dual boot until you masterize using of linux.I plan to install dual boot with fedora, beacuse ubuntu system irritates me.
Also with fedora you can emulate windows app and games.

Are you retarded or just talking out of your ass?

Ubuntu can do anything Fedora can :2 cents:

The Duck 11-23-2008 10:07 AM

With the command prompt it feels a bit like the old dos days :)

Arnjen 11-23-2008 10:12 AM

I dont like to spend too much time working in the terminal and ubuntu looks like the dist that is attracting most new users which makes for a big community. I had a look at Fedora that one looks pretty good as well.

seeandsee 11-23-2008 12:38 PM

Ubuntu is good!

Magix 11-23-2008 01:35 PM

I have omly one advice.....
DON"T DO IT!!!!!

scarlettcontent 11-23-2008 01:47 PM

I have 2 boxes. a windows xp box and a linux box

I wouldnt bother trying to completely swap over to linux as you may find a lot of things dificult to do but it really depends on what you wanna do.

just throw in an extra hard drive and do a dual boot

I actualy use fedora and have done for the past 3 years. ubuntu is cool too.

PowerCum 11-23-2008 01:55 PM

Try http://www.opensuse.org/en/

Even that the company that builds Ubuntu spawned with 30 million funding, they still lack a decent usability project manager, and this completely renders their product to a crawl. SuSE on the other hand is made by Novel and always has been intended for working and production rather than having to tweak stuff all day long to make it functional.

scarlettcontent 11-23-2008 02:13 PM

what I hate about ubuntu is it doesnt have the root gui

I would recomend fedora any day.

red hat/fedora has been a leader for many years.

http://fedoraproject.org/

I also recomend a dual or triple boot rather than trashing windows alltogether.

Zester 07-08-2010 12:27 AM

ubuntu = working harder to gain the same thing in windows XP, but makes you feel like you in control of your computer not like windows XP.

Bird 07-08-2010 01:17 AM

Be sure to go with wubi before you wipe out windows

Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows
Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. ... You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot ...

gaffg 07-08-2010 02:19 AM

use virtualbox or vmware if you need to use programs for windows.

Please elaborate why Ubuntu sucks, and what makes SuSE so much better - for all of us uninformed people

:Oh crap

seeandsee 07-08-2010 02:41 AM

With ubuntu you will probably have more security than ever

Switching to another OS is better than keep using an outdated system.

Windows XP has another fatal flaw

bufferover 07-08-2010 05:07 AM

Ubuntu is good way to start with Linux

It's pretty wise to bump 1,5 year old thread...

EliteWebmaster 07-08-2010 05:47 AM

1 year old thread :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Phoenix 07-08-2010 05:55 AM

this thread rules...even if it is old

V_RocKs 07-08-2010 04:48 PM

to those who care... Keep in mind that running Ubuntu or any other Linux/FreeBSD installation from inside a virtual box is not the same as running it by itself. Many things will be different. Especially your connection to the Internet. You can run Photoshop 2 with Wine in Linux... But trying to install it under a virtual platform is fucking hell on wheels!
