About Montreal (for Qwebec Expo attendees)

Hi, I just wanted to create a thread in case some people need/want more information on Montreal. I am not affiliated with the Qwebec Expo :)

So I'll post some basic infos and If anybody has some questions, ask away.

Food specialties:

Poutine: http://www.montrealpoutine.com/reviews.html?reviews

From the best reviews, La Banquise and Patati Patata are the closest to downtown.

Smoked Meat
: Swartz on St-Laurent (there are 2 or 3 others that are very good as well but this one is the institution)

http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/map_eng.html

As for the bars/clubs, most of them are located on crescent(english/tourists), st-laurent(french/english/more locals) and st-denis(mostly french).
There's also some on ste-cath and in the old port.

After hours: Circus(hetero) and Stereo(gay) are both on Ste-Cath

There are a lot of different types, so ask away if you have any question.

If you're still there on sunday, go to opera if you want high end club with nice chicks

Iron Fist 08-18-2008 08:07 PM

Poutine? Hell no... you want a unique and expensive french experience go for the Fois Gras - nothing says artery clogging lovin like duck or goose fat liver. :thumbsup:thumbsup

Right on! Best club in montreal...

MediaGuy 08-18-2008 08:09 PM

A bump for cultural enlightenment.

Some side-notes, though:

While Schwartz's is the place to go to for the best dry smoked meat, The Main deli just across the street has always had the better, juicier fatty smoked meat. Also their verenicas and roasted onions rock.

Dunn's, though a chain, has the best smoked-meat poutine if only for its portions, which are more than generous.

There's a lot of good pubs and taverns all over downtown, some nice little hidden spots right in the "latin quarter" or gay village as it's also known.

Poutine and Hot Dogs are also an important element, and the Montreal Pool Room rocks on both those counts.

Asian is awesome too, and Montreal boasts great Tonkinese and Chinese restaurants, mostly centered in the Chinatown section, though some places, like Park Lane, have roast duck and other savouries that are rarely equalled elswhere in North America (actually I know the spots but can't remember the names dammit lol).

For hangover/breakfast, you simply CANNOT beat Cosmos in NDG. The selection of breads alone will knock you out.

Ok must stop now or I'll just head out and pig out...

:D

JenniDahling 08-18-2008 08:10 PM

Hey Chris what has the weather been like? Shall I bring a sweater if I'm used to the tropics?

I'm getting worried about canada, where I'm from the opera is a high society place where the fat lady sing, in canada that is a high end club with nice chicks ? :helpme:1orglaugh

Evil E 08-18-2008 08:17 PM

Hi Jenni,

While I am not Chris, I can tell you that it's pretty hot here, but you might require a sweater at night. If you do have a small umbrella you can bring it with you or purchase one here as it's been a bit rainy lately or a hat/hoodie.

The weather forecast is very nice so far but we never know. Here is the direct link.

There's also the famous bagels http://www.stviateurbagel.com/ you can order them online if you don't feel like going to the place(it's not that far from downtown)

Now I know that most of you guys are on business, but if you like skyline views, there is the Hotel de la Montagne(you just take the elevator and you're there), bar and pool on the top and nice view.

Even higher there is a restaurant and club http://www.altitude737.com/ . Can't say more about this one because I've never been there.

Honestly, though, it's hard to find a bad bagel in Montreal unless you get it from a plastic bag in a chain grocery store.

For amazing midnight bagels from paper bags, just Google it: http://maps.google.com/maps?sourceid...e-results&cd=1

:D

buddyjuf 08-18-2008 09:50 PM

If you guys want a very nice restaurant, try BRONTE on Sherbrooke.

Definitely go for their tasters menu (around 6 courses I think), and if you can pair it up with the wine tasting menu, all the better.

Be ready to pay 125$ a person without the wine, and 175$ a person with the wine.
Very much worth it though!

jjmerago 08-18-2008 11:22 PM

Bump!! for bagels

Seriously lol... c'mon guys, use your imaginations and mad pick-up artist skills... if you play your cards right you'll be dining at the ''Y'' instead of chowing down on poutine. :2 cents:

Evil Chris 08-19-2008 05:43 AM

Just to clarify.... Evil E, and Evil Chris are two different people although we are both here in Montreal.

Actually now that I think of it, St-Viateur bagel isn't a breakfast place either, it's a bagel-making shop. You pick 'em up and eat em in the cab back to the hotel... or get them the day before :P

Queue de Cheval is very good, but also very overpriced. Much better bang for the buck all around the city.

Cost me 600$ for a dinner for 2 with a decent bottle of wine.

ASACP Tim 08-19-2008 12:22 PM

Bump for Michael and Patty! You put on one hell of a show :thumbsup
