Interesting that you should say that. I start hearing more and more about 4chan. Perhaps imageboards are the next big thing, after all.

I think this is a trick question...

It's one hell of a force, these days. However, Wakabi boards earn no money without a loyal following. The only reason 4chan survives is traffic, the fact the moderator/owner works for an ISP so has incredibly cheap bandwidth, and its huge base of anime-wackers. I speculated upon this a few years ago until I did some research. Most chan-clones don't even make enough from ads to pay for the hosting.

Chan-clones suffer from visitors who know too much about the internet, though. That makes it a fair bit harder for them to make money than it would be with a slightly more naive (and less underage) visitor base.

Besides, the ration of bandwidth consumption to ad views should still be better than it is with tube sites.

...you're not presenting movies on it, so, well, yeah. Then again, so many tube sites just rip off other tube sites run by idiots who don't have a way to block their FLVs being hotlinked.

I agree that people looking for these specific types of sites tend to find what they're looking for, but, as you mentioned, they're smarter than those who will whip out their credit card and buy something on the faceless internet just because it has a $49 RapidSSL certificate.

Still, I think it could work when geared towards another audience.

Perhaps adding a system that automatically adds posts every once in a while, containing some porn pictures and a link to a site, could help in increasing revenue.

The big problem with the chans, right now, is that the content is merely soaking up bandwidth, and not generating income. I imagine it would be fairly easy to change that.

The problem is making a wakabi that will attract the right people, and keep your loyal following. Hell the 5 seconds I survived /b/ it had probably a whole paysite's worth of content posted through it.

The biggest problem, again, these are the 'sit at home and browse the internet' nerds who won't pay for things, and will make a firefox plugin to just block your autopost as well as using FilterSet-G to ban your ads.

I agree that it is technically possible, but wakabi is still very underground, not very user-friendly, and while it's content driven, it's entirely a different market; you can sell them JPop and humpable pillow covers.. but, pay for porn? Doubt it.

The thing is, I think the format could work with other audiences as well. The other day, I saw someone on /b/ asking how he could open a rar file. That, to me, signifies that the format appeals to a fairly broad audience, not just the computer-savvy.

Move away from weeaboos and toward general porn surfers (remove the japan-themed aspects of the sites), and it could work well.

So, there was one person out of how many who wasn't familiar. For the rest, how're you even going to seed it? I just see it taking a lot more time and effort than it would to just setup a TGP CJ, a ton of blogs, or anything else. Sure it's somewhat different, but by the time it takes on, there'll be something else 'new and unique'. How about a pornCloud? :1orglaugh

I'd probably seed it with my existing adult traffic, integrate it with a few blogs and tgps. It'd take more time to set up than blogs, TGPs, etc, but I think it might be more future-proof. After all, chan-likes are a lot less vulnerable to tubes and file-sharing sites than TGPs and blogs are.

It might fail, of course, but I think it's worth trying :)

I dunno. 4chan and those boards seem to be in the stage SomethingAwful was in 2001-2003, where every ad, every promo, every spam was considered an intrusion upon their right to their board. I think it has a little time to take hold until they accept that it's actually a viable means of not only user-generated content, but for product placement.
