Mitsubishi 3000GT
I'm thinking of buying a 1999 version of this car. Has anyone here ever owned one or know people who have? Any repair problems?
|
get vr4
|
the sl is slow but at least it looks cool...its really slow though
like slower than a v6 mustang slow...like get beat at the track by a stock ford focus slow :D vr4 is pricey but its pretty quick. if you buy this model, make sure you get a downpipe on the car and the turbos will bake...literally if you keep the car pretty much stock, its a solid car. if you go drag racing it plan on breaking your drivetrain |
^ seems to know his shit.
on another note, am i the only one totally confused by the previous post? :1orglaugh |
pics?
|
MrBrian - Dont you have a WRX? Have you done anything to it?
- I would just wait for the new WRX STI IMpreza or the new Lancer EVO. :thumbsup |
I thought about getting a vr4 a few years back and doing some stuff to it, but after reading a message board of its owners I decided against it. Seems they're not very reliable to begin with and it gets worse and worse the more you add to it.
|
They are heavy cars.
I would also go with the VR4 (turbo model) if you can afford it. Depends on what you are looking for in a car. As I recall, their turbo model is twin-turbo, and also pushes the V6 up to 300 horses. Toss in a new prom, set the boost up a few psi, and get a real exhaust system, you could pickup enough horses to run with a new Camaro SS. |
I have a cls happy with it :)
If you can go for a supra I love those cars .... Fast solid and upgradable like no other |
My little N/A 4cyl. will take run with the SS's.
|
|
Nice Ganja. What do you drive, and what have you done to the engine?
My friend bought a 35th anny Camaro SS. That LS1 is crazy fast. Car is in high 12's stock. |
That is the gayest rice rocket I have ever seen. It's slightly better than the one my neighbours have.
You can see it here |
That is what the car looks like in stock form actually (the 3000gt VR4)
From what I know on the "rice rocket" terminology, it applies to honda, accura, any grocery getter economy car in stock/mostly stock form, with no performance mods done to it besides a muffler, huge-ass wing, intake, and tons of stickers, and ground effects. Or anyone who thinks they gain, "50 horsepower" from a muffler. ;) |
The car that I will probably get is the 1998 3000GT SL. That's the fastest they have -- they're asking $22,000 but I can probably haggle down to $18000.
Does anyone have any history with the SL or the base? The VR-4 is a lot different in construction (different engine, transmission, etc.). I really like this car's design and the asking price is down my alley. Oh yea, that car that hahmike posted was a 1999. Here is a pic of the car I may buy: |
but you did say 1999 the first time, i'm sure, even though i'm too lazy to read the first post again... :winkwink:
not an issue, i'm also a compulsive mind-changer :helpme |
I did say 1999 at first -- I called the dealership to get more info and it turns out that the 1999 is the standard -- the 1998 is the SL and the price difference is a few hundred dollars.

I got it a few years back when I first started pushing porn and I can say that I will NEVER get rid of this car. It is a pain in the ass to work on and to take it to a shop will cost you a fortune but as far as I'm concerned, it's 100% worth it. I have heard horror stories of problems after upgrades with newer models but I've never had any problems. I'm getting ready to put a new set of sneakers on it and it's gonna cost $1,000. That's the worst part of the car being all wheel steering and drive. It eats tires for breakfast. Oh yeah... the insurance is more than the car payment was. SPECS: 720 H.P. on the dyno. 2 16G Turbos Runnin 21lbs of boost. No catalytic converter with the 2-3" pipes runnin' straight out of the manifold. Who wants to RACE ...............?????? |

I noticed that the earlier models like yours had engine problems -- I see that this is fixed thought in the later models :) The insurance would cost me probably around $4000 a year in NJ or even more in HA. Do you think it is cheaper to get a 98 repaired compared to a 91 since the 98 is newer? |
720 at the wheels? :thumbsup
Jesus man, I would hate to buy gas for the thing. I take it you run 93 octane? Nice! |
Why not a BMW ? :Graucho
|
BMW's are fancy but boring in design.
|
everyone and their brother has a bmw, they're fuckin' standard issue! although the mitsubishi's do a great job of making a non asian guy look like a wannabe asian guy (which has to be the worst thing in the world - no offence to anyone in this thread... bwahahah), i'd rather take one over a bmw... especially as all the indian kids here drive around in daddy's bmw, and the last thing i want is to be considered part of "the desi benchud" gang, whatever the fuck that means.
anyone that genuinely goes for a car simply because it is german, italian, japanese, american, british, without considering the car itself, or alternatives, is a loser. :1orglaugh personally i'd always go for merc because i genuinely love the cars... "daddy" drove a merc. over the years he had rover, nissan, ford, honda, toyota, and always said that toyota was best - funnily enough it was stolen. merc sl500 is a bit pricey, but nice. |
will anyone ever admit to investing in a quality russian car?
http://www.parkerscarclub.com/graphi...0/C0563202.jpg these lada's are so bad... i had to turn off "explicit image filtering" on google image search just to find a picture. :1orglaugh |
fuck rice rockets.. go euro.
Audi S8 |
I used to own a 1994 3000GT SL. I loved it. It was a good looking ride and pretty damn fast (for the price). It handled great and was a lot of fun to drive. Top speed I took it to was about 125 mph, and it was running great and definitely had some more left under the hood...
And then... :( One day, out of the blue, third gear started to slip on me. I took it to three different places to check it out, and they all said the same thing. Turns out the whole transmission needed to be replaced. Rather than pay the $3k bill, I traded it in... But I did love that car while I had it. If I ever get another one, I'll get a newer VR4. |

Nice car Dirty D!
Here is my car. It is a Mitsubishi EVO3, however it has changed so much since these pics were taken. I'll get some new ones done soon. http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~evo3/images/car1.jpg http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~evo3/images/car2.jpg http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~evo3/images/car3.jpg The motor was completely rebuilt and a dirty big Turbonetics turbo was bolted on. |

That is a badass ride. I saw you post that a long time ago. Where's the pic of yours and your buddies ? I think his was orange or something. Post that bad boy. As for the time.... I gotta admit, I'm no race car driver and can't get the thing under 12. BUT, I do have a good friend who has racing in his blood (Al Blaha : Dunn-Benson Racetrack - for the east coast gear heads). He ran the car at 10.1 - He only took one run and still asks me to take it out there again so he can break 10 with it. |
BTW -- if I do get this car I will not be adding and lame-ass rocket spoiler or stickers. I'm thinking of adding:
or Hey drunk: how loud is the stock exhaust? |
