Self-Employment is like Crack

I was just going through some old files stored away from ages ago, and I came across this little rant posted here on gfy some years ago. It really hits home, and I remember reading it over each adn every time things were looking bad when I was first starting out. I figured id repost it, as I'm sure this hit close to home to a lot of folks on here as well.

Self-Employment is like crack...

Those who know, know.

You start working for yourself and make more and more money. Pretty soon you are making
more money than you ever have before, and the whole time you're having a blast. Next
thing you know you are fucking spoiled rotten. No matter how bad shit gets you can't
imagine going back to a real fucking job. Pushing pencils or running somebody elses
business? Me fucking run your shit while I take home a whopping $10 a fucking hour? I'd
rather fucking die!

You push yourself as hard as you can because theres no way in hell you could ever do
that again. No matter what happens you'd rather live on the street than have to punch
a fucking timeclock. You are going to do whatever the fuck it takes to make money you
can call your own. It may be a pain in the ass but it's YOUR pain and YOUR ass. You'll
get lazy and shit will go wrong. But when it does, you can damn sure figure it out and
you will survive. You WILL do whatever the fuck you have to for things to work.

And when your wife or girlfriend says you work to much and/or don't spend enough time
with them you will tell them to fuck off with their spoiled ass because NO FUCKING WAY
you are going to let your business slide to the point where you have to sign your name
to a job application.

Aside from the fact that I can no longer force myself to work for somebody how do you
people get by on $10, $15, or even $30 a fucking hour? I don't have much of anything but
$30 an hour wouldn't fucking touch the notes I have.

Beware noobs, once you reach a certain point there is no turning back. You would rather
fucking die.

Dagwolf 01-19-2007 10:09 PM

It's like that even if you don't make loads. I value my freedom.

starpimps 01-19-2007 10:12 PM

wow...well put.

escorpio 01-19-2007 10:13 PM

Thanks, that was some inspiration I needed. Going through a rough period.

Splum 01-19-2007 10:21 PM

Free from the Matrix since 1999 and never going back

woj 01-19-2007 10:24 PM

well said :thumbsup

teg0 01-19-2007 10:24 PM

I've already gotten to that point. I was in a supermarket the other day and and heard some girl talking to a friend about how she just got a $13 hour job. Talking about it like she just won the lotto or something.

I would agree

pr0 01-20-2007 01:24 AM

It's a good point....but rather die? Naaa.....8 hours a day doing security or tech support would be pretty funny. Remember that #....its only 8 hours, & at the end of your 8-5, you can do whatever the fuck you want & live your life.

Our businesses are all time consuming & life consuming. 12, 14, 18, 20 hours a day......most of the people here can't even sleep without dreaming in code & stats.

It really is a toss up....get rich & die quick due to stress. Or be poor & take some assholes bullshit all day, but live till your 80+ : )

Me, i'll get rich & die quick.

CC 01-20-2007 02:20 AM

So true. I love not having to work for the man at an office Monday - Friday with people I hate.

wyldworx 01-20-2007 02:34 AM

It is a hard one, but I would ask this. Why would one want to go backwards, I have found this industry to be more forgiving than most, and more desirable. Crack just makes you look ugly and scatters the fuck out of you till there is no more to scatter!!

DateDoc 01-20-2007 02:34 AM

The more you make the more you want. You hit a $1k day in sales and you begin to think ok what do i have to do to double that and it turns out it isn't really that hard. You do have to work a lot but I'd rather bust my ass for 10 years and make more than I can spend and retire than worry about what every one is doing tonight or the next night, etc.

tabasco 01-20-2007 02:35 AM

Good read. I'm at that point now - pretty sure I'm gonna quite my job in next few weeks to peddle porn fulltime and also get a couple of mainstream projects off the ground.

In six months doing this only part time I've managed to exceed my day job pay by a decent margin. 6 months ago I didn't have a clue about this industry or how to make even the most basic html page or any of it, and I still have lots to learn. But I've been working my fucking ass off on this because I soon saw the potential to be able to do this fulltime and not have to drag my ass to a job I don't really like every day for the next 40 years whilst barely making enough to cover the mortgage.

Fuck that shit... I'm gonna back myself to do this. :pimp

sicone 01-20-2007 02:55 AM

when put that way, yes it is like crack

Actually, yes rather die. Not sure how hard you work, but I'm sure most established people have gotten to the point where it's very laid back. Wake up around noonish, check some emails, checks stats. Grab some food.. bs watching tv. Dabble in some projects till 8ish and go out and do whatever with friends who do have 9-5s.
12, 14, 18 hrs a day? Christ. Maybe if a must be done project came along, sure I've pulled 48hr sessions straight. But thats the exception not the norm.
Self employment is supposed to be about relaxed lifestyle, not JUST the money.

selena 01-20-2007 08:05 AM

I'd agree with the vast majority of that post.

I don't have a lot of free time but when I do, and I'm asked to go do something, my first thought always is "but I could be working".

jerzeemedia 01-20-2007 08:28 AM

Let me input here, I quit my job about 3 years ago now. That post, is so very true; at least it is for me. I work sometimes a couple of days in a row without sleep just because I know my work will pay off, and it'll result in the many benefits of not having an employer. Times can get pretty rough, but if you can fight through them (as it's very hard to usually), they usually improve with some extra elbow grease. Hang in there, all my self-employed friends and strugglers.

definitely

DraX 01-20-2007 08:43 AM

very intreresting post, made me think twice

BlackCrayon 01-20-2007 08:50 AM

yes i agree. there have been rough times where people told me 'maybe i should get a real job' because i wasn't making very much. fuck that i thought, i'll get back up there and sure enough things got better again and im back making more money than them again. and most definitely is about a relaxed lifestyle to me. i love to be able to go back to bed in the morning, not have a schedule, not have to commute and not have to listen to anyone but me.

Marshal 01-20-2007 09:13 AM

yep, self-employments is like crack! i've found out i was in top ten earnings in my town, and i'm sure this is the point where's no comming back! :1orglaugh

Zester 01-20-2007 09:15 AM

good read.
i'm doing this part time and got to the point my sites work for themselves - I don't have to do anything but read emails every now and then.
i don't have much trouble with my day job so I got my ass covered either way: if porn dies tomorrow - still got my day job which is enough income, and if I get fired from my day job - HA! who gives a fuck, I got a salary doing things that makes me jerk off and now I will have to jerk off full time - poor me !! HAHAHA!!

He-he...
Yep 100% of true...

free4porn 01-20-2007 01:37 PM

thats my inspiration now!

DaddyHalbucks 01-20-2007 01:47 PM

That point for me was $0 per hour. I quit my job when I was broke and had no income from webmastering.

The climb up has been brutal.

But there no other path for me.

Boobs 01-20-2007 01:48 PM

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 01-20-2007 02:00 PM

i was self employeed for 4 years doing this shit, now i have a job that i work 5PM till 10PM, it helps alot, sure its GUARANTEED money, which is nice, because my shit could flop and i wouldn't make any sales for like 2 weeks, that would suck, but yeah... it also helps me get away from this because recently, id get lazy and not wanna do anything, well being away from the comp for 5-6 hours a day 4 days aweek really helps keep me motivated and not burnt out, i will most likely keep this job even if i'm making more an hour with my website then i am a whole 6 months at this job, just to keep things fresh and not boring
