This one is from around 1999. By 2000, Google had around 4000 of these servers.

And the beauty is that several of the PCs on the never worked but the system design was optimized around multiple computer failures.

Apparently, they now have 300-400 thousand servers and order them in units of 10,000.

CuriousToyBoy 10-26-2006 08:09 PM

How big are they now as in number of servers ?

Be interesting.

Some say they have 1 million servers, but the number I hear more often is about 300 thousands. I know they recently started using AMD processors instead Intel Xeons because power consumption was starting to cost them more than hardware.

ForteCash 10-26-2006 08:26 PM

Insane, and very inspiring :thumbsup

dotcommer 10-26-2006 08:29 PM

If you only knew how ghetto it was for us during that time ... :1orglaugh

Half the time, our checks were PERSONAL checks from the owners that then got reimbursed.

The Above Net facility in San Jose had rack upon rack upon rack after a while .. I used to just sit there in awe of it. eBay wasn't far away, either.

All of Google's shit was homemade. And even to this day they don't buy servers from the likes of Dell, IBM, etc, they put them together themselves...
