I bought a new car. Explain six gears to me!
 

I bought a new car today and it seems to have six gears - which I'm not used to. Any idea how I'm supposed to use this?

Anyone know anything about super chargers?

your 5th and 6th gears will most likely be used on the FWY while the other 4 will be used to peel the rubber off your tires!

The 6th gear is called reverse ;)

6th should be a nice cruising gear so you still have get up and go while you're burning your way up through fifth.

My goal is to have two cars. One for daily driving (which is the one I just bought) plus my super car. Still working on that one.

Yes Rochard, I know a good deal about cars and 6-speeds can be very tricky and if you don't know how to shift exactly right each time they will break very easily. cluth in, move to 1st gear, slowly let off the clutch and on to the gas

then clutch down and slip into 2nd gear,
then...

Richard, 6 is more than 5. That's pretty much it.

6th gear is basically to keep rpm's low at higher speed which will save gas... besically with 5 speed you can go lets say 120mph at 5500rpm, but with 6th gear you will do 120mph at lets say 3500rpm which will save gas...

6 speed usually has shorter throws, but 5speed has longer throws which means you will be in power band longer before switcing gears... i hope it made sence

Exactly what I said.

Depending on the trans fifth will be a 1.2 or 1.5 to 1 overdrive and 6th will be heavier.
But one some model transmisions first gear has a real short rpm ratio top out so you can hardly get moving in it before you need to shift.
either way just play with it and get used to it.
15 years as a Provincial Auto technician finally pays off at GFY who would have thought.

Yikes, I just bought another Mustang. Cobra this time around.

And the six gears are indeed fucking with me; I'm not used to it but then again I've only driven the car like eight miles. It's just so odd putting the car into sixth gear where reverse normally is.

I'll post pictures up later when I get them.

what are you talking about? A manual gearbox? Or 6 gears in an automatic instead of 5? That doesnt matter i guess, its still a brake and a gaspedal only....

In europe only women who cant drive have cars with automatic gearboxes ;)
