I don't smoke regularly. Sometimes, I smoke one every 10 minutes, sometimes I only smoke one an hour. Very irregular.

Young 03-08-2006 06:24 PM

I have a feeling you carefully worded this topic...

"regularly"

didn't feel like being called a hypocrite?

Anyways...cigarettes are baaaaddddddddd...never had one...never will.

yea, by regularly i mean the people who smoke like 5 packs a day and shit. that's all bad...

WarChild 03-08-2006 06:26 PM

I don't know. How can half of the United States be over weight? Nicotine is at least addictive, unlike stuffing your face.

sfera 03-08-2006 06:29 PM

yea man i tried it back in HS and i couldnt take it but you have to make urself like it. hard to quite though

your decision, just dont smoke around your children

i get to thank my sister and parents for smoking while i was a baby. because of that i get chronic cluster headaches (extremely sharp paroxysms of pain in the same spot on either side of my head and around my eyes) and an abnormally small ribcage (which hurts my lungs occasionally and keeps me from getting common treatment for sleep apnoea)

Libertine 03-08-2006 06:48 PM

Actually, the answer to the question should be quite clear... smoking gives pleasure, and people often prefer short term pleasure over long term benefits. Smoking may kill you, but that's not likely to happen in the next few decades. Meanwhile, the pleasure is instantaneous.

The same goes for eating unhealthy food, drinking, wasting money on porn and lapdances instead of investing it, wasting time playing video games, watching tv instead of working out, etc.

MikesTraffic 03-08-2006 06:53 PM

fuck cigarettes, pot is where its at

i see your point, but it's not really the same. driving is an essential part of our lives these days, smoking is not...

Been smoking 27 years - usually half a pack a day. I can still run a mile in about two hours (with smoke breaks)...and my one lung feels fine.

A lot of people who have smoked all their lives reach their 80s and 90s. My grandparents did.

Besides...if I die tomorrow of cancer you can thank me for saving the health care system long-term expenditures. :1orglaugh

Sorry, no dice. Driving has an actual benefit whether you're a driver or not as opposed to smoking cigarettes.. also being a pedestrian or cyclist instead of a driver has the exact same dangers in that you can still be hit by a car even if you never drive. Driving in a lot of circumstances is a neccessity, smoking is a voluntary habit.

It kinda does, though.
A while ago, I went out with a girl I know. I had just started smoking again after a year of not smoking, and she said it looked good on me. Subsequently, she started smoking again, too, which was a bad thing because she emptied my pack, but it looked pretty sexy on her.

people are just stupid, they dont think about it til they end up with lung cancer.

toddler 03-08-2006 07:20 PM

Aw, fuck off. Tell you what, you don't preach to me about smoking, and I won't preach to you about religion. Or porn.

KRL 03-08-2006 07:24 PM

When people realize what smoking has done to them its too late.

Exactly what my late uncle told me. He passed away two years ago due to lung cancer.

guess you havent seen accident stats lately..

driving is more dangerous than smoking , and neither is something you have to do..

Your much safer using public transportation or walking , but you do it because you like it..

Driving is a voluntary habit, your argument isn't valid..

People drive because they enjoy it.. IF your telling me you have never driven because you enjoy it or there was no safe method around your fibbing..

Im just being a devils advocate.. dont throw stones at glass houses.

Insert BEER in place of smoking or TWINKIES or MAKEUP or etc etc etc etc i could have used a ton of topics , point is bland statements like that dont hold much weight unless the person telling them is an angel :)

Do we need junk food ? no but we eat it even though we know people die from it , we drive fast even though we arent in a rush and know speed kills..

Theo 03-08-2006 07:56 PM

addiction

no1 lethal legal drug

Theo 03-08-2006 07:58 PM

don't be fooled,if you are chronic smoker specially from young age you have tremendous chances to die at early age from cancer. What KRL said is true.

People drive with the point of getting somewhere. There is nearly no point to smoking, other than a slight relaxing feeling from nicotine.

Also, if you drive everyday and smoke every day the odds are better the smokes will kill you. :)

In terms of death, only in your dreams Smokie.

Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Each year, more than 400,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking. In fact, one in every five deaths in the United States is smoking related. Every year, smoking kills more than 276,000 men and 142,000 women.

http://www.gofuckyourself.com/newrep...eply&p=9423646

All of the Americas together sees about 150,000 deaths from car accidents.

Now in terms of injury it's different.

xclusive 03-08-2006 09:07 PM

I have never and would never smoke, It's what killed my father.

je_rome 03-09-2006 03:44 AM

most people dont put much importance on their health until they are lying in their death beds

dbavaria 03-09-2006 04:02 AM

I see a lot of old people sitting idle, I can imagine some of them just bored as fuck passing their days...If life was a year or two shorter and you could enjoy it more would it be worth it?

I have cluster headaches too. And they're not caused by early-life exposure to second-hand smoke. They usually don't arrive until middle-age, and they're usually caused by smoking and drinking.
Do you drink?

potter 03-09-2006 04:31 AM

I started smoking when I was 18. Quit last year at the age of 22. It's been 16 months since I quit. Had probably about 4-5 cigars in that time. And just recently took a hit off a cigarette (it was an Iraqi cig my friend brought home on leave recently and I tasted it).

One of the best decissions of my life. Anyway, if people want to smoke. That is cool, everyone can do what they want to. I've seen some very fucked up things in this world. Normal everyday things people do and what our current society follows. I see nothing wrong with it if someone wants to smoke.

If thats the logic you use to defend smoking in your own mind, so be it. Instead of trying to compare life's dangers to justify smoking, why not just eliminate as many as possible. Since its impossible to completely eliminate driving, be as careful as possible. Smoking, however, is something you can eliminate entirely.

Smoking is a sick habit and I've just never understood why people give in to it knowing the potential consequences. I've always viewed smokers as weak people, they knowingly are destroying their bodies yet are unable to alter their behavior. Also, to those who think its ok to just smoke sparingly, there was a recent long term study that concluded even smoking 5 cigs a day could reduce your life expectency by up to 10 years.
